Lesson. 6 Together in Our Community
The story of the Commons
Once upon a time there (is / was) a small village in a forest.
The villagers were farmers and (raised / to raise) cows.
Luckily, some good grassland (lain / lay) in the middle of the village.
‑ Let‘s (share / sharing) the commons.
‑ My cow can (get / be gotten) enough grass.
‑ Yeah, there‘s plenty for every (cow / cows).
Everyone was (allowed / allowing) to use the grassland.
Therefore, it was (called / calling) “the commons.”
By tradition, each (family / families) only had one cow, so it was easy (of / for) each (cow / cows) in the village (to find / to be found) enough grass (eating / to eat).
The grass on the commons (was / were) green all summer long.
‑ If I (had / have) two cows, I would be richer.
‑ No one will (notice / be noticed) it.
But one day a villager (broke / breaking) the rule.
He brought another (cow / cows) and let it (graze / to graze) on the commons.

He thought (what / that) nobody would (notice / be noticed) it.
A happy feeling (filled / filling) his heart when he thought of the milk and cheese (what / that) the second cow would (bring / be brought) to his family.
‑ He has four children.
‑ If I (am / were) you, I would raise another (cow / cows).
‑ Thanks for the tip!
A few days later, the farmer visited a close friend (who / which) had four children.
He wanted (helping / to help) his friend, so he told (him / to him) in secret, “If I (am / were) you, I would bring in one more cow and (raise / raised) it on the commons.”
The friend thanked him and (was / did) as he (told / was told) the next day.
‑ (Who / Whom) are you? ‑ I‘m new.
‑ Who is (lying / laid) there? ‑ I don‘t know.
‑ I can be the (richest / richer) farmer in this village.
Soon, (other / another) villagers did the same.
Some secretly brought one more cow to the commons, while (other / others) brought (even / very) more to the grassland without (told / telling) anyone.
They thought (what / that) there would be enough grass for the (additional / additionally) cows.
Soon the village was (full / fully) of happy‑(looking / looked) farmers!
‑ Hey, stop (pushed/ pushing) me! ‑ Move over!
‑ (This / These) is my spot! ‑ We need rain!
‑ I‘m hungry. ‑ Me, (too / either).

‑ I don‘t have any cows (left / leave)! ‑ Good bye.
‑ What (happened / was happened) to the commons?
In the past, when a dry year (came / was came), the small number of cows on the commons always found something (eating / to eat).
However, no grass was (left / leaving) now (because / because of) there (was / were) too many cows.
Things were (harsh / harshly) for the villagers; many of the cows (dead / died).
Enjoy, but remember the rule: ONLY ONE COW PER FAMILY.
At last, the grass (came / was came) back.
Now it was able (supporting / to support) only one (cow / cows) per family.
The village (went / gone) back to the one‑family‑one‑cow rule.
The villagers all learned an important lesson: when resources are (shared / sharing), it is important (of / for) everyone to (value / valuing) the resources and (use / used) them fairly.
The villagers now (tell / tell to) this story to their children. They (call / are called) it “The Story of the Commons.”
