1) Research Divisions

Northeast Asian Regional Development Center aims at establishing region wide strategies for national and regional development to properly cope with the globalization and regionalization of economies.

The Center carries out comprehensive research on land, housing, social overhead capital, industry and environment in preparation for the eventual unification of the Korean Peninsula and develops long-term and short-long-term policies conducive to regional and national territorial integration. Based on the previous studies on Northeast Asia, the Center analyzes the trends of regional economies, industrial development, social overhead capital and urban development in neighboring countries such as China, Japan, North Korea, and Russia to explore any possibility for joint and cooperative development with them. Research outcomes are geared to conceiving macro-policy directions for national territorial development.

Won-Bae Kim

Senior Research Fellow. Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.

His recent research works include 「Basic Design of Infrastructure Development in the Korean Peninsula」(2006), 「Collaborative Regional Devel-opment across the Korea-Japan Strait Zone」 (2005), 「Urban Networks and Infrastructure Plan-ning in the Metropolitan Region」(2003) and

「Restructuring Design for the Korean Peninsula in New Regional Economies of Northeast Asia」 (1998). His major publications include 「Culture and City in East Asia」(1997, Oxford Univ. Press) and 「Asian NIEs and the Global Economy」(1995, Johns Hopkins Univ. Press). He is currently Direc-tor of the Northeast Asian Regional Development Center.

Sang-Jun Lee

Research Fellow. Ph.D. in Engineering, Technical University of Berlin, Germany.

Major research works include 「Urban Policies for the Former GDR after German Unification and its Implications for Korea」(2006), 「An Integrated Approach to Inter-Korean Cooperation for Infra-structure Development」(2005), 「 Strategic Approaches to Special Economic Zones in North Korea in the Era of Economic Cooperation in Northeast Asia」(2004) and 「Economic Reforms and New Policy Issues on Industrial Infrastructure Development in North Korea」(2003).

Jin-Cheol Jo

Associate Research Fellow. Ph.D. in Urban Stud-ies, Portland State University, USA.

Recent research works include 「Establishment of Consensus Building System for the Efficient Implementation of National Development Project」(2005), 「A Study on the Utilization of the Bukhan River Basin through South-North Korea Cooperation」(2005). His specialization in the field of urban and regional planning encompasses the urban and regional planning in North Korea and North-East Asia. He also published several articles regarding North Korea in international journals such as Cities and Habitat International.

Sung-Su Lee
