Content Analysis of Online Discussion of Physics Investigations by Middle School Students

For a content analysis of the messages in the middle-school students’ on-line discussion of physics investigation, we developed an analysis model that consisted of a participation domain, a content domain, and an interaction domain. The participation domain was composed of a number of messages, the connection statistics of the on-line discussion learning system of physics investigation, the time statistics of message writing, and the time statistics of message. The content domain was composed of a type of speech, an investigation step, a title, and evidence. The interaction domain was composed of typing an answer, the ratio of response to non-response messages, and the answering time. With this analysis model, we analysed the 726 messages written by students and showed the analyzed result of content domain. Based on the result of the study, it was important that investigation theme be selected in order for students to have various explanations for an active interaction.
