Lesson 8. Design for All
Patricia Moor – Mother of Universal Design
유니버셜 디자인의 어머니 페트리카 무어
In 1979, a woman (started / has started) a journey to cities in the U.S. and Canada.
She looked (over / under) 80.
She couldn't see or hear (good / well).
She couldn't walk (good / well) without a stick.
With all these (difficulty / difficulties), the woman had to (climb / climbing) stairs in subway stations and (get / getting) on (crowding / crowded) buses.
She had to (open / openning) heavy doors and use can openers with her weak hands.
Sometimes she got hurt or found (her / herself) in danger.
Every (moment / moments) was very difficult for her, but she visited (more / better) than 115 cities and (end / ended) her trip in 1982.
(Who / Whom) was the woman and (what / which) made her (do / to do) all this?
She was Patricia Moore, a (26-year-old / 26-years-old) designer.
(During / While) the 1970's, she (worked / has worked) for a big design company.
She often asked at meetings, "How about (designed / designing) for old or weak people?"

The (other / another) designers always answered, "We don't design for (those / that) people."
She became (tired / tiring) of the same cold answer.
Finally, she decided (becoming / to become) one of "those people" and (travel / travelling) around many cities (understanding / to understand) their difficulties better.
For this, she (put / was put) on her grandmother's clothes, uncomfortable shoes, (and / but)thick (glass / glasses).
The shoes were (so / too) (uncomfortable / uncomfortably) that she couldn't walk well without a stick.
The glasses were (so / too) thick that she couldn't see well with them.
She also put lots of cotton in her ears (making / to make) her hearing (bad/ badly).
(While / During) her journey, Patricia felt the difficulties old people (go / going) through.
From this experience, she designed products anybody could (use / be used) safely and easily.
This was the (begin / beginning) of "universal design," or "design for all."
One example of her universal design ideas (is / are) low-floor buses.
They have no steps and have (a such / such a) low floor (what / that) even a person in a wheelchair can (use / be used) (it / them) without any help.
Of course, this helps other people (get / getting) on the bus more (comfortable / comfortably), (too / either).

Today more and more designers are (followed / following) Patricia's way.
Products (like / alike) big flat light switches, doors with easy handles, and phones with touch buttons are (helped / helping) people (live / living) better lives.
(Look / Looking) around you, feel the difficulties of people (who / which) are older or weaker, and (try / trying) to (find / finding) solutions from their point of view.
You could be the next Patricia Moore and (make / made) the world a better place for (everybody / everybodies).
