01

W: How can I help you?

M: I’d like to see a doctor. I have a terrible toothache.

W: All right. Has Dr. McGill seen you before?

M: (Yes, I’m a regular patient.) 02

M: Monica, do you have any plans after class?

W: Yes, I do. I have violin practice.

M: Can you help me with my homework after violin practice?

W: (Sorry, it ends late today.) 03

W: May I have your attention, please? The student council has an important announcement to make. The election to choose this year’s student council president was scheduled to be held in two weeks, but there has been a change of plans. The candidates, as well as the current student council, have agreed that a two-week campaign period is too short because the final exams will be held at the same time. They’ve asked for more time to present their ideas. So the date of the election has been moved to the first Monday of next month. That will give you an extra two weeks to decide on your vote.

04

M: Have you been to the new restaurant around the corner yet?

W: Yes. The food was quite good, and the prices were low.

M: That’s what I heard. And it looks comfortable. Yet it always seems to be empty.

W: Well, when I was there, I had to wait 30 minutes for my lunch. That’s too long.

M: But if the food is good, isn’t it worth waiting for?

W: Not really. People these days have busy schedules.

M: I guess you’re right. Office workers have a short time for lunch.

W: Exactly. If they want more customers, they’ll have to improve that.

M: That makes sense.

05

W: Hello. May I help you?

M: Yes. I’m thinking of studying English overseas during my vacation.

W: Great! Where do you want to go?

M: Either Canada or Australia. But I don’t like cold weather, so I think Australia would be better.

W: That depends on what time of the year you go. During the summer, it’s warm in some parts of Canada.

M: Good! That’s when I have time to go.

W: We have many great summer programs in Toronto during those months.

M: How much does it cost?

W: It’s $6,000 for three months.

M: What’s included in the price?

W: Everything’s included: the course, the plane ticket, housing and food.

M: That sounds great!

06

W: I made this birthday card for Amy.

M: Wow! It’s so cute. Look at the bunny with a ribbon on her ear.

W: Amy really loves rabbits, so I drew one in the middle of the card.

M: Good! The rabbit is holding a heart-shaped balloon in her left hand.

W: Right. How about the cupcake in her right hand?

(2)

M: It’s also good. There are three candles because she is three years old, right?

W: Yes. Should I get rid of the carrots around the rabbit?

M: No, they’re okay. And I love this phrase you wrote under the rabbit.

W: “I love you, Amy!” I always say it to her.

M: I think she will be happy with this card.

07

W: Tommy! Can you please come help me in the kitchen?

M: Sure. What do you need me to do?

W: We need to decide what to make for dinner.

M: Can’t we just order pizza?

W: Again? I want to cook something tonight.

M: Then how about spaghetti? You know I love all Italian food.

W: Okay. Let’s make sure we have everything we need.

M: We bought some tomatoes, onions and ground beef yesterday.

W: Right. Oh, I think we’re short on noodles. Can you go buy some?

M: Okay. Are you going to make the tomato sauce while I go to the grocery store?

W: Yes. You know it’s my specialty.

08

[Cell phone rings.]

W: Hello?

M: Hi, Katie. This is Peter.

W: Oh, Peter. What’s up?

M: I’m afraid I’m having a problem with my computer.

W: Did you install that anti-virus program I told you about?

M: I’m trying to download the software. But there are too many programs on the website.

W: You should download the program that says “Virus X set-up.”

M: I can’t find it. Can you come over and help me?

W: Actually, I can’t. I’m babysitting my little brother. But I could email the program to you.

M: Could you? That would be great.

W: Sure. I’ll do it right now.

M: Thanks for your help, Katie.

09

M: Hello. How can I help you?

W: I’d like to send these two packages by regular mail.

M: Here’s the price chart. Where are you sending them?

W: To Manchester, England.

M: England is in zone 1, but the cost depends on the weight.

W: Then could you check how heavy it is?

M: Okay. Please put it on this scale. [Pause] It’s 2 kg, so it’ll cost you $19.

W: And the other one, please.

M: Okay. [Pause] It weighs 1.2 kg, so it’ll be $16.

W: Okay.

10

M: Hi, Tracy. What are you reading?

W: Hi. I’m reading a book about the first Olympics in ancient Greece.

M: Sounds interesting. When did the Olympics begin?

W: It says they began over 2,700 years ago. They were held to honor the god Zeus.

M: I see. Oh, look at these people in the picture. None of them wore clothes.

W: That’s right. That’s how they competed back then.

M: Really? It seems like they’d be embarrassed.

W: Maybe. And that’s why no women were allowed to participate in or watch the games.

(3)

M: I didn’t know that. I want to read this book. Can you lend it to me?

W: Sure!

11

M: Doctors Without Borders is an international medical organization that provides emergency aid to people around the world. It was founded in 1971 and now helps people in more than 70 countries. Each year, doctors, nurses and non-medical workers volunteer for more than 3,800 aid missions. The organization runs hospitals and clinics and performs operations. It also provides feeding centers for children and offers mental health care. When needed, it even digs wells and provides blankets and shelters. Through longer-term programs, the organization also helps patients with serious diseases such as AIDS.

12

M: I’m really looking forward to the SGI Conference this year.

W: The schedule looks great. I’ve already prepared some points for the round-table discussion and the Q&A session on the second day.

M: Those should be good, but I’m really interested in seeing the speaker from the software company on the first day.

W: Yes, I heard he’s a very successful businessman.

M: Right. Should I save you a seat?

W: No, I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it.

M: Why not?

W: On the first day, I have a very important meeting with a customer in the afternoon.

M: That’s too bad. But you’ll be attending the other programs that morning, right?

W: Sure.

13

M: Hello. Thank you for coming in today.

W: Hello. I’m Mary. Nice to meet you.

M: Please sit down. I understand you’re interested in volunteering at our center.

W: Yes, I’d like to help with the children’s after-school activities.

M: Great! I have a few questions. First, what did you study in college?

W: I studied early childhood education.

M: Have you ever worked with five-year-olds before?

W: Yes, I’ve been teaching kindergarten for the last three years.

M: That’s great experience. When can you start?

W: As early as tomorrow.

M: And how many times a week can you work?

W: About twice a week.

M: (Okay, you can start this week.) 14

[Telephone rings.]

M: Super Fast Connections. How can I help you?

W: I’m using one of your Internet services, Special Package II, and I’d like to have it disconnected.

M: Can I ask the reason?

W: Yes, I found a company that offers a cheaper service.

M: Are you sure you want to change to something cheaper?

W: Yes. Besides, I don’t need a wireless Internet connection.

M: Okay, but you will have to pay a penalty if you end your contract now.

W: How much is the penalty?

M: It’s 300,000 won.

W: Wow, that’s a lot. How long do I have left on my contract?

M: There are eight months left.

(4)

W: (Then I’ll continue using your service.) 15

W: Kevin and Sofia have an important history paper due next Monday. Kevin is almost finished, but Sofia doesn’t even know where to start. She asks him for help, and he promises to give her some files with information on the topic. Kevin copies them onto a USB memory stick, but forgets to bring it to school the next day. Kevin tells Sofia that he forgot the USB at home, and Sofia is very disappointed. Sofia thought that she would have the files and could start on her project today. In this situation, what would Kevin most likely say to Sofia?

Kevin: (Sorry, but I’ll email you the files tonight.) 16-17

M: Hello, this is Luke Taylor reporting from the south eastern coast of Florida. We are currently waiting for the arrival of Hurricane Ellen, which is a dangerous category 4 storm. According to experts, it is only 12 hours away. The police have said that everybody must leave the area as soon as possible. It is expected that Ellen will bring large ocean waves ranging from 35 to 40 feet, as well as wind speeds as high as 120 miles per hour. Local weather forecasters expect major flooding to occur in the area. For these reasons, everyone should get as far away from the coast as possible. We will continue to keep you updated with the latest news about the storm, so please stay tuned to Channel 8.

M: Clara, have you seen my running shoes?

W: Are they the ones with the blue laces?

M: No. My running shoes are all red. I wore them yesterday.

W: (Oh, I saw them beside your locker.) 02

W: Can I use your laptop for a few minutes?

M: Sure. Use it as long as you need to.

W: Thanks. Can you tell me your password to log in?

M: (You don’t need one.) 03

W: In the past, people usually had a small circle of friends. But these days, people have huge networks of friends from all over the world thanks to the Internet. By using the E-Buddy website, you can keep track of all your friends and easily stay in touch with them. There’s no cost to join.

Just go to our homepage and click on the “Become an E-Buddy” button. You’ll be asked to provide some basic information about yourself, including your age, gender, job and email address. After that, just hit the enter key and you’ll be ready to get started.

04

M: Did you see this sneaker company’s ad?

W: No, but it’s all about cancer research.

M: Yes, it doesn’t mention sneakers at all. It’s part of their cause marketing campaign.

W: But I don’t see the point. This won’t increase their sales, will it?

M: Well, not directly. But it will help them improve their brand image.

W: I see what you mean. Customers will realize that they care about people’s health.

M: Exactly. People who see this ad will have a good opinion of the company.

W: And that will make them more likely to buy their products, right?

M: That’s right. It’s a way of creating regular customers.

W: What a great idea!

05

M: Hello, Michelle. Thanks for joining us today.

W: I’m glad to be here, David.

M: I just watched your latest film a few days ago, and it was a bit of a shock.

W: Yes, a lot of people have been saying that.

M: The last time you were on this show, we talked about your role as a princess.

W: Yes, that was after I starred in The Enchanted Kingdom.

M: Exactly. But in this new film, you play a tough, dangerous criminal.

W: That’s right. I felt I needed to try something different. It was quite a challenge.

M: I’m sure it was. You can tell us all about it after this short break.

W: All right.

06

W: Justin, look! I got three new action figures.

M: Wow, your collection is getting bigger. This man in a suit is pointing his finger.

W: Right. Doesn’t he look strong?

M: Yes, he really does. The woman in the middle is standing with her arms crossed.

W: I like her outfit. Her striped pants look especially cool.

M: Why is this man on the right holding a pistol with both hands?

W: I don’t know. But I like his pose anyway.

M: I see. Look at his big hat. It makes him look like a tough cowboy.

(6)

W: Yes, that’s why I bought him. Which one is your favorite overall?

M: I can’t decide. I like them all.

07

[Cell phone rings.]

M: This is Jason.

W: Hi, Jason. This is Laura Cooper. I’ve been emailing you about your used car.

M: Oh, hi, Laura. So, have you decided to buy it?

W: Well, as you know, my mechanic dropped by to check it out.

M: Yes, he was here yesterday and took a long look at the engine.

W: Yes, he said everything looked fine. But I was wondering if you’d be able to drop it off at my house.

M: Sure, I’d be willing to drive it over. Now all you have to do is to make up your mind.

W: I see. Oh, I want to confirm that you agreed to lower the price to $2,000.

M: Yes, that’s right.

W: In that case, it’s a deal.

08

[Cell phone rings.]

W: Hi, honey! Are you busy at work today?

M: No. I think I’ll be home early.

W: Great! Oh, today is the day for recyclable waste pickup, isn’t it?

M: Yes. We have to take out our recyclables between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

W: That’s right. But I won’t make it home in time.

M: Oh, really? Haven’t you finished your project yet?

W: Oh, I’m done with my project.

M: Then, are you having dinner with your colleagues?

W: No, a client is coming for an important meeting.

M: I see. Don’t worry. I will do it this time.

W: You are so sweet. I’ll buy your favorite cookies on my way home.

M: That’s not necessary! I’ll see you at home!

09

M: Welcome to the Kingsville Zoo. How can I help you?

W: I need tickets for my family. I’m wondering how much they cost.

M: Well, an adult ticket is $10.

W: Okay. How much is it for children? I’m here with my husband and daughter.

M: That depends. Tickets for kids under 13 are $5.

W: Oh, my daughter is 7. But I heard you have a special family discount.

M: Yes, we do. Families with four or more members get 10% off.

W: Oh, I wish we had brought my son.

M: So would you like to buy the tickets for your family?

W: Yes, here’s my credit card.

10

W: It looks like Harry’s Store is closing.

M: I heard about that last week. They’re closing at the end of this month.

W: You must be disappointed. You always enjoyed shopping for sporting goods there.

M: Yes, but I found a better store.

W: Really? I thought Harry’s had everything you needed.

M: Yes, but their staff is not very helpful. I heard that’s why they’re closing.

W: They’ve been open for several years, though.

M: Yes, when they opened 10 years ago, the staff was better. But it got worse recently.

W: So, do you like the new store better?

M: Yes. Do you want to go there with me? I’m going next week.

(7)

W: Sure. I need a badminton racket, actually.

11

M: The carambola, more commonly known as the “star fruit,” is native to South and Southeast Asia. When cut into slices, its shape resembles that of a star. It has green skin, but it turns yellow as it ripens. The entire fruit can be eaten without peeling it or removing its small seeds.

Traditionally, unripe star fruit has been used as a remedy for skin problems. There are two basic types of star fruit: a smaller, sour type and a larger, sweet type. These days, due to its popularity, it is also grown in parts of the Americas.

12

W: Hey, why don’t we go to Funland Park next week?

M: We’ve been there three times already this summer. I’m tired of it.

W: Yes, but they’re having concerts next week. Rio Johnson is playing on Tuesday!

M: Don’t you know I don’t like her music?

W: Oh, right. But the rock band Steel Rain is playing on Monday.

M: Steel Rain! That’s more like it. What time?

W: It’s at 6 o’clock. Shall we go?

M: I wish I could, but I have a Spanish class every night at 7 o’clock.

W: Well, there’s an afternoon show on Friday, but it’s Rio Johnson. Steel Rain plays after her.

M: Oh! I just remembered that my teacher canceled class for that night.

W: All right, then. Let’s go!

13

M: What’s wrong, Kim? You look depressed.

W: It’s just that learning Korean is so hard.

M: What do you mean? Didn’t you tell me that you got an A on your last test?

W: Yes, but that was written Korean. My problem is understanding what people say.

M: Oh, I see. Have you tried watching Korean dramas?

W: No, I haven’t.

M: It’s a great way to improve your listening skills. That’s what I did to practice Korean.

W: Really? And did your listening get better?

M: It sure did. And the shows were pretty interesting, too.

W: (In that case, I’ll take your advice.) 14

W: You’re watching the baseball game.

M: Yes. Why don’t you sit down and join me?

W: Sure. I love baseball. [Pause] Oh, this is American baseball.

M: Yes, it’s the Major Leagues. I’m a big Yankees fan.

W: I thought it was a Korean game. Personally, I’m a Lotte Giants fan.

M: Really? But you have to agree Major League games are more exciting.

W: What makes you think that?

M: There are many talented players in the Major Leagues.

W: Right, but Korean players are also talented.

M: Maybe, but there are Korean players in the Major Leagues, too.

W: I know. But I think Korean games are more enjoyable than Major League games.

M: (Well, I suppose everyone has different tastes.) 15

W: Elaine received a potted plant as a birthday gift from her best friend. She had never owned a plant before, so she decided to take good care of it. She watered it every day and always placed it near the sunniest window. Despite her effort, the plant began to wither. Elaine was so

depressed that she showed her plant to Sam, a florist, to find out why it was dying. Sam inspected the plant carefully and found that Elaine had given the plant too much water. In this

(8)

situation, what would Sam most likely say to Elaine?

Sam: (You should water your plant less often.) 16-17

M: You may find a baby’s crying annoying and irritating. But crying is the only way that babies can express their needs, since they can’t speak. To become a better parent, it is important to understand the different reasons why babies cry. First of all, crying usually means hunger.

Therefore, feeding babies is often the best way to stop them from crying. However, when babies cry with their eyes closed, it means they are tired. In this case, they simply need to sleep.

Sometimes, crying implies sickness. When babies cry with weak, moaning sounds, they should be taken to a doctor. Finally, if your baby cries for no clear reason, he or she is probably bored.

By listening to your baby carefully, you’ll soon become an expert at identifying the different kinds of crying.

W: Carl! Where have you been? I’ve been waiting almost an hour.

M: Really? I thought the show starts at 3:00.

W: It does. But we were supposed to meet an hour earlier.

M: (I’m sorry. I must have misunderstood.) 02

M: Are you ready to go back home?

W: Yes, I’m almost finished. I just need to pack a few more things.

M: Okay. How long do you think it will take?

W: (A couple of minutes at the most.) 03

W: May I have the attention of all our employees, please? As you may already know, the company chose a design by Chris Kendall for our latest model of basketball shoe. We have worked for months on it, and I’m proud to say that the project has finally been completed successfully. The shoe, known as the BlackStar, is now available for purchase at several stores.

We expect sales to be excellent. For more information, take a look at our company’s website.

Thank you for listening. Have a great day!

04

M: Can you hand me that light bulb? I want to screw it into my lamp.

W: Okay, but be careful. Light bulbs can break easily.

M: Actually, they’re stronger than you think. I have to hold it tightly as I screw it in, but it won’t break.

W: Why are light bulbs so strong?

M: It’s because of their shape. It’s similar to an egg’s shape.

W: What makes a round shape stronger than others?

M: When you grab an object, you put pressure on it. But a round shape distributes the pressure evenly.

W: So no single section gets too much pressure?

M: That’s right. Light bulbs were designed with a round shape for this reason.

05

M: Thanks for meeting me today.

W: No problem, Mr. Harrington. So what exactly are you interested in?

M: Well, I want a house built on some land I own near the river.

W: All right. What type of house do you want?

M: I’d like it to be three stories tall.

W: Okay. How many bedrooms do you want?

M: I need five bedrooms, two bathrooms and a garage.

W: Okay. I think I can design something that would fit your needs.

M: Great. Can you give me an estimate of how much it will cost to build?

W: Sure. I can email you the design for the house and the estimate next week.

M: That would be perfect. Thanks a lot.

06

W: I love looking at window displays downtown.

M: Some of the shops do have great displays in their windows.

W: Wow, look at that one! It’s really different from the others.

M: That crescent moon in the center is so big!

W: Yes, and that tree has leaves shaped like stars. How unique!

M: A woman wearing a hat is sitting in front of it.

(10)

W: Yes. She’s wearing nice knee-high boots!

M: Look at that man leaning against the wall.

W: I love that wavy pattern on his suit!

M: This window display really makes me want to buy something.

07

[Telephone rings.]

M: TS Hotel. How can I help you?

W: Hello. My name is Monica Lee. I have a reservation for this Wednesday.

M: Let me check. [Keyboard sounds] Yes, you have a suite reserved for two nights.

W: Well, I need to stay for two additional nights.

M: I’m sorry, ma’am, but all our suites are booked for this weekend.

W: Are there any other rooms available for the additional nights?

M: Sure. We have a single room available.

W: I see. Can I see a picture of a single room?

M: Of course. There are several pictures on our website. The address is www.tshotel.com.

W: Thank you. After looking at the pictures, I’ll call you back.

M: That’s fine, ma’am.

08

M: Something bad happened on my way to school today.

W: Tell me what happened.

M: It was icy this morning, so I took the bus instead of walking.

W: Did you take the wrong bus?

M: No. But I looked in my backpack at the bus stop to make sure I had my homework.

W: Did you have your homework?

M: Yes, I did. But when I got on the bus, I realized I didn’t have my debit card. I almost panicked.

W: Oh no. You must have dropped it at the bus stop.

M: Yes, so I went back. Luckily, I found it.

W: I hope you weren’t late for school.

M: Fortunately, I wasn’t.

09

M: Carol, can you come here for a minute?

W: Sure. What are you doing with the receipts from our business trip?

M: I’m trying to figure out how much we spent.

W: Well, the rental car cost $50 a day, and we had it for two days.

M: Yes. So the total cost was $100. And our hotel rooms were $75 each for one night.

W: That’s right. We only stayed for one night.

M: Right. So the only thing left is our food costs. These are the restaurant receipts.

W: Oh, okay. What do they add up to?

M: Let’s see... It looks like a total of $90.

W: That sounds right.

10

W: Jamie, do you remember we’re volunteering at the orphanage this weekend?

M: Sure. How many hours will we spend there?

W: Maybe about 3 or 4 hours. They just want us to have a good time with the children.

M: What about playing the game “Simon Says” with them?

W: That sounds good. But I can never think of any fun actions to have the kids do.

M: Don’t worry. I’ve got lots of ideas.

W: Great! And can you also bring some stuff we can use for more games?

M: Sure. I have some balls, cards and toys.

W: Good. And after playing some games, we can read them a few books.

M: That’s a good idea.

(11)

11

M: If you’re planning a trip to Byron Bay, Australia, why not stay at the Golden Sands Resort?

We’ll make you feel at home in this paradise. The resort is in a great location, five minutes away from the beach. All of the rooms have air conditioning and free wireless Internet access. There is a café and a restaurant that hosts barbeques on Friday nights. And you can go whale watching from May to October. Or, if you just want to relax, you can get a massage or take a yoga class.

There is something here for everyone!

12

M: Hi, what can I do for you?

W: I want to sign up for a cooking class.

M: Great. We have Japanese and Italian food classes. And starting this month we have Korean food classes, too.

W: I’m from Korea. I don’t need lessons in that.

M: Okay. Well, how about a Japanese food class? It’s on Wednesdays at 6.

W: Hmm... I can’t get here until 6:30 at the earliest.

M: No problem. We have some classes that start at 8.

W: I’m afraid that’s too late for me.

M: Well, it looks like we only have one class that fits your needs.

W: All right. Sign me up for that one!

13

M: Congratulations, Linda. I heard you got a job in Seoul.

W: Thanks. I’m really excited about it.

M: Have you found a place to live?

W: Not yet. I’ve been looking at online postings, but I can’t find a suitable place.

M: Really? I thought there would be a lot of rooms for rent.

W: Oh, there are. But the rents are much higher than I expected.

M: Maybe I could help you. My uncle is a real estate agent in Seoul.

W: Oh, really? Do you think he could help me find a place to live?

M: Maybe. I can ask him. Let me know your budget and what kind of place you’re looking for.

W: (Okay. I really hope he can help me.) 14

W: Have you decided on which universities you’ll apply to, Jake?

M: I’m still not sure I want to go to university, Mom.

W: What are you talking about?

M: Instead of going to college, I might just start looking for a job.

W: Why? You could get into a good school.

M: But I think it’s better to get a variety of work experience while I’m still young.

W: What you’re saying makes sense. But you can gain a variety of experience in university, too.

M: You’re right. But I also want to earn money.

W: You need to think about your long-term future. You’d get paid more if you had a degree.

M: (Okay. I’ll think carefully before making my decision.) 15

W: Jason has decided to have a surprise party for his friend Sara. He pretended that he forgot about her birthday and asked her to come to his house to help him study. Then he called all his friends and asked them to help him. Everyone gathered at his house and prepared for the party.

Some cooked food, while others put up decorations. Then they waited for Sara to arrive. But when Jason sent Sara a text message asking her to come over, Sara answered she couldn’t because she had to have dinner with her family. In this situation, what would Jason most likely say to his friends?

Jason: (I’m sorry, but I think I wasted your time.)

(12)

16-17

M: Good afternoon. Today, I’m going to let you know surprising things about dogs. Dogs always have been our best friends. They have also provided us with many services because they have a great sense of smell. Many dogs are trained to help police prevent crime and rescue people in danger. Surprisingly, dogs can even use their sense of smell to tell if a person has cancer. Many studies have been done to show this. For example, dogs are able to detect skin cancer by sniffing a person’s skin. They can also detect lung cancer by sniffing a person’s breath. And some studies show that dogs can also detect breast and kidney cancer by smelling a patient’s urine. Thanks to their powerful sense of smell, dogs are helping to improve our health!

W: Jeff, are you going by the post office this afternoon?

M: Yes, I am. Why do you ask?

W: I need to mail this package. Would you mind doing it for me?

M: (Not at all. I will take care of that for you.) 02

M: Susan, I like your coat.

W: Thanks. I got it on sale at a department store.

M: Wow. How did you get a discount?

W: (I had a coupon for half off.) 03

W: We are pleased to announce that the Spring Marathon will be held next week. It is an annual tradition in our city, and thousands of people from across the country participate every year.

This year the marathon will take place on April 19th, which is two weeks from now. The route of the marathon goes through the main streets of downtown. Therefore, all of the streets on the route will be closed to traffic during the race. And parking will not be allowed on many streets in the downtown area on that day. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

04

M: I’m going to travel throughout Asia next summer. I’ll try many different kinds of food!

W: That’s great. But make sure to learn the local manners.

M: I heard it’s polite to make noises when you eat.

W: Yes, in some countries. But manners are different everywhere you go.

M: What about burping?

W: Well, in the Philippines it means you liked the food. But don’t do it anywhere else!

M: Okay. Do you have any other advice for me?

W: Yes. In Cambodia, finishing all your food means you’re still hungry.

M: Really? I’ll remember to leave a little food on my plate.

W: Good. But don’t do that in Indonesia. Your host will think you didn’t like it.

05

M: May I ask you a few questions?

W: Yes, of course.

M: Were you at this crossroad when the accident happened?

W: Yes. I stopped at the red light, and then it happened.

M: Did you see which of the vehicles ignored the signal?

W: The truck. It turned left on the red light.

M: And was the bus going straight on a green light on the opposite side?

W: Yes. I don’t think the bus driver expected the truck to turn left.

M: Do you remember the time of the crash?

W: It was about 5:10 p.m.

M: Thank you for your help. We may need to contact you for more information.

W: No problem.

06

W: Welcome to Forest Farm. We hope you enjoy your day here.

M: Thanks for welcoming us. The fields and animals are very beautiful.

W: Thanks. What do you think about the wooden fence around the farm?

M: It’s nice, too. Oh, those two cows standing face to face look funny.

W: Yes. Do you see the horse drinking water from the pond? That’s the one you’ll ride this afternoon.

(14)

M: Is it? It must be thirsty.

W: Yes. Let’s go meet Josh. He’s my husband.

M: Sure. Is he the man picking apples from a tree?

W: Yes. He’ll show you around the farm. He’ll take you in the truck in front of the barn.

M: Great! I’m already excited.

07

W: Hi, Jack. Do you have plans for this weekend?

M: Yes. I have to study for next week’s exam.

W: Come on. Let’s have fun this weekend! I have two tickets for an art exhibition.

M: I’d love to go to the art museum, but I can’t. I need to study.

W: I’m sure you’ll do fine.

M: We can do that next weekend. Why don’t we study together instead?

W: Hmm... It sounds like you’re really serious about studying. Okay, fine.

M: Great! Where do you want to meet?

W: At the library. Or do you want to come over to my house?

M: Yes, I like that idea better. I’ll call you on Saturday morning.

W: Okay. Talk to you then. Bye!

08

M: Oh, no. I don’t want to watch this again. Please change the channel.

W: Why? This is an advertisement for a charity. You should consider donating to them.

M: I would never do that.

W: Why not? I donated to them last year. They help people suffering from terrible diseases.

M: Yes, it’s a good cause. But look at this advertisement. It must have been very expensive.

W: Yes, I suppose it was.

M: Well, I don’t want my donation to be spent on advertising.

W: Now I see your point. But everyone should donate to charities.

M: Oh, I agree. I support several local charities and one international one.

W: Well, I’m glad to hear that.

09

M: Hello. How can I help you?

W: Hi, I’d like four bus tickets to the airport.

M: There are two airports. Which one are you going to?

W: Oh, I forgot to say I’m going to Gimpo Airport, not Incheon.

M: Okay. Tickets to Gimpo are 6,000 won each, so four tickets will cost a total of 24,000 won.

W: Do you have children’s tickets? My daughter is 8 years old and my son is 10.

M: Yes, they’re half the price, so it’s 3,000 won for each.

W: In that case, I’ll need two adult tickets and two children’s tickets. Here’s the money.

M: Okay. Here are the tickets and your change.

W: Thanks.

10

W: This botanical garden is great.

M: Yes. There are so many interesting plants. What is this called?

W: I don’t know its real name, but it’s called a “touch-me-not.”

M: What a strange name! Do you know why it’s called that?

W: Touch one of its leaves and find out.

M: Wow! It curled up as soon as I touched it!

W: Right. Oh, look. Here’s a sign. It says its real name is mimosa pudica.

M: Yes, and it also says it was originally found in South America, but it grows in many places now.

W: I remember it used to grow in my yard before. It seems to grow anywhere.

M: Well, I think it’s really cool.

11

M: Antonio Vivaldi, the Italian composer and violinist, was a major figure in Baroque music. From 1704 to 1740, he served as a teacher, conductor and composer at a famous music school. He loved to travel, producing successful operas across Europe. Unfortunately, Vivaldi’s reputation went into decline in his later years, and he died in poverty in 1741. For over a century after his death, his music was ignored by the public. Then, in the 1840s, it began to gain popularity again because of its influence on Johann Sebastian Bach. Since the 1920s, he has been recognized as a great composer.

12

W: Honey, I got this brochure from the travel agency.

M: Great. Let’s decide where to go on vacation.

W: Well, these are the five most popular trips.

M: I’d like to go somewhere to relax on the beach.

W: Me, too. Hawaii sounds amazing, but it’s too expensive.

M: The trip is also too long. Let’s go to Saipan again.

W: No. I want to go somewhere new.

M: Then how about Guam? There must be lots of things to see on the island tour.

W: No, I’m not interested in Guam.

M: Another place we haven’t been to is Sapporo, but there’s no beach there.

W: But I would like to experience the outdoor hot springs.

M: Okay, we can go there then.

13

M: What are you doing, Stella?

W: I’m enjoying this book.

M: I can’t believe you’re reading a book on the beach.

W: It’s a great book!

M: Why don’t you play volleyball with us instead?

W: No, thanks. I really want to finish this chapter.

M: Isn’t that one of those books about a boy who thinks that he’s a wizard?

W: Right, but he doesn’t just think he’s a wizard; he is a wizard.

M: That sounds so childish.

W: No, lots of adults read it. You should read it, too! You won’t regret it.

M: Really?

W: Yes. It’s really fun.

M: (In that case, I’ll try to read it.) 14

W: How’s your leg feeling, sweetie?

M: It’s great! It feels like it was never broken.

W: I’m glad to hear that, but don’t try to do too much.

M: I know that I have to stay home and rest. Don’t worry about it.

W: Don’t forget that!

M: I won’t. I’ve already been home for a week, you know.

W: I remember you talking about the annual Sports Day at school. I’m sorry that you won’t be able to go.

M: It is disappointing. But there is a way I can participate in it.

W: How, sweetie?

M: I can’t play any sports, but I can still watch them.

W: (Oh, you can go if you promise to do only that.) 15

W: Jenny went to the cinema with her boyfriend. She wanted to see a romantic comedy, but they

(16)

saw a horror movie instead. Jenny was so frightened that she covered her eyes for most of the movie. After the movie, they had dinner at a restaurant near the theater. It is time for Jenny to go home now, but horrible scenes from the movie keep going through her mind. Her boyfriend says goodbye to her, but Jenny doesn’t want to be alone for even a minute. In this situation, what would Jenny most likely say to her boyfriend?

Jenny: (Can you walk me home? I’m still scared.) 16-17

M: Good evening, fellow citizens. I stand before you tonight grateful to be your current representative. But election time is coming again, and I would like to ask you to support me once more. My opponent has been blaming me for all of the city’s problems. But I want to talk to you about some of the progress I have made. First, the entire city is safer due to my emphasis on providing quality police protection. I have also brought new jobs to our city in the technology field. Plus, I have done all of these things without raising taxes. Finally, we were selected to host next year’s National Youth Baseball Championships. This event will improve our reputation across the country. In the future, I hope to continue to improve our city. I have many great plans, but I can only accomplish them if we work together.

M: Wow, this new shopping mall is nice.

W: Yes, it is. I need a new bed. Let’s go to a furniture store first.

M: You bought a bed last month. Why do you need a new one?

W: (Actually, that was for my younger brother.) 02

W: Michael, do you have any plans tonight?

M: No. I was going to relax at home.

W: Well, I have tickets to see your favorite band. Do you want to go?

M: (Yes, I would love to go!) 03

W: Good morning, students. I have an exciting announcement to make. As you all know, the annual Arts Festival is going to be held next month. Usually, only schools from across England participate, but this year our sister school from the United States will also be attending. The school is the Grand Arts Academy from San Francisco, California. Our schools have had a cultural exchange program for the last five years. I hope that all of you make the students feel welcome.

And don’t miss out on such a good opportunity to see their work!

04

M: You wanted to see me, Ms. Adams?

W: Yes, James. I want to talk to you about your work.

M: I’m sorry I haven’t made more sales. I’m still learning about this job.

W: I understand. I think you’ll be an excellent salesperson someday. But there is a problem.

M: What is it?

W: You’re too relaxed with our customers. You need to focus on being professional.

M: Oh, I see. I suppose you’re right.

W: You should also start wearing business clothes. It will make a better impression.

M: Okay. Sorry I let you down, Ms. Adams.

W: Not at all, James. Like you said, you’re still learning.

05

W: Good morning. How are you feeling?

M: Hello, Ms. Carter. I’m feeling much better.

W: I was very worried when I heard about the accident.

M: It wasn’t too serious.

W: Everyone in the class is worried about you. They asked me to give you this card.

M: Wow! Thank you very much.

W: Do you know when you will be able to come to classes again?

M: The doctor said it’s still going to be a few more days.

W: I’ll let all your friends know. Take good care of yourself.

M: Thanks. But I’m worried I won’t be able to catch up on my studies.

W: Don’t worry! You’ll be fine.

06

W: Honey, why are you rushing around like that?

M: Come into the dining room. I want you to see how I decorated the table for dinner.

W: This is so pretty! It was sweet of you to set the table for me.

M: How about the roses in the center?

W: They’re really beautiful. I love their fragrance.

M: Do you like the wine next to the flowers?

W: Yes, it’s good. I also like the glass between these two candles.

(18)

M: And there’s an anniversary gift for you in this box on the right.

W: How romantic! Thank you so much.

M: Please read the card on this plate. I wrote something special for you in it.

07

W: I’m excited about my cousin coming to visit me for two weeks.

M: I heard he lives far away.

W: Yes, he was born and grew up in the U.S. This will be his first visit to Korea.

M: How are you going to introduce Korea to him?

W: The first week, I’m planning to take him to the folk village and the old palaces.

M: That will be exciting.

W: I want to go to the aquarium on Thursday of the following week, but I’m not sure if I can.

M: Why?

W: Because I have to work then. If you have time that day, could you go with him?

M: Sure, I can take him.

W: Thanks a lot!

M: No problem. I don’t have any plans then.

08

W: Hello. Can I help you?

M: Yes, I just arrived here today and would like to exchange some money.

W: All right. Would you like to exchange US dollars for Korean won?

M: Actually, I have Canadian dollars. Is that okay?

W: Certainly. How much would you like to exchange?

M: Hold on, let me check. The money is in my bag.

W: Okay. And I’ll also need to see your passport.

M: Oh, really? I left it in my hotel room. How late are you open today?

W: We close in half an hour. And we’ll be closed all day tomorrow, as it’s Sunday.

M: I see. Well, maybe my hotel can exchange money for me. Thanks for your help.

09

W: I hope we have another good day today.

M: Me, too. We only have one day left to raise money for the nursing home.

W: I think we’re close to reaching our goal of $500.

M: Let’s count exactly how much money we have in the donation box.

W: 310, 330, 350… That’s a total of $370.

M: Wow, that’s great!

W: I think we’ll meet our goal by the end of the day.

M: Oh, you forgot to count these two 20 dollar bills at the bottom of the box.

W: Wow, we’ve raised even more money than I thought.

M: Yes. Let’s get the booth ready for today. I’ll put up the banner.

W: And I’ll set up the donation box.

10

M: Hi, Nancy. How are you feeling?

W: Not well at all, Dr. Smith.

M: What are your symptoms?

W: Well, I’ve been feeling very tired recently. I also have a sore throat, a headache, and indigestion.

M: I think those are symptoms caused by too much air conditioning.

W: Really? What should I do to get better?

M: Take some medicine and drink lots of warm water often. You should also get enough rest.

W: I see.

M: And try to eat lots of vitamin-rich fruits, too. You should also keep the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures less than 8°C. That can help prevent such symptoms.

(19)

W: Okay. Thank you.

11

M: May I have your attention, please? The company is now accepting applications for a job opening in the human resources department. It’s for the assistant manager position, so you must have at least two years of related work experience. A four-year university degree is also required, and a major in business management is preferred. The main duties of this position include organizing the monthly payroll and handling the company’s health insurance policies.

It’s a full-time position, although the hours are flexible. You can email your application to me or bring it to my office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

12

W: I finished the workshop schedule. Will you look it over?

M: Okay. [Pause] So we’re going to start the day with lunch at noon?

W: Yes. And then we have the team meeting.

M: Hm... I think we need two hours to discuss everything.

W: Okay, I’ll extend the meeting from one hour to two hours.

M: Good. After the meeting, people can take a break and then get some fresh air playing soccer.

W: Yeah, and the campfire following dinner should be lots of fun.

M: Oh, I’m looking forward to that the most.

W: Why don’t you bring your guitar and play some songs?

M: Yes, I will. I think this workshop is going to be great.

W: I think so, too.

13

W: Honey, did you hear about the flea market this weekend?

M: No, where is it going to be held?

W: In our apartment complex.

M: Are you selling some of our old things?

W: Yes, but we have to decide which ones. What about this old chair?

M: We can sell it. It doesn’t match the other furniture in our living room.

W: And this lamp we got from your aunt?

M: It can go, too. Do you have any old clothes we can sell?

W: I’m sure I’ll find something. Let’s look through the closet.

M: [Pause] Oh, I’ve got an old leather jacket we can sell. Do you have anything?

W: Yes, I found a lot of old clothes that I don’t wear anymore.

M: (Great! We have enough things to sell now.) 14

[Cell phone rings.]

W: Hello?

M: Hi, Kate! This is Jake.

W: Hi, Jake! Where are you?

M: I’m sorry, but I’m going to be late.

W: Why? Are you still at home?

M: I’m on the subway. I fell asleep and missed my stop.

W: Oh, that’s too bad. I’m already at the gallery.

M: I’ll be there in 20 minutes. I’m sorry that you have to wait.

W: That’s okay. I understand.

M: Can you buy the tickets for us while you wait?

W: Sure. I’m standing next to the ticket counter now.

M: Great! Thank you so much. I’ll see you soon.

W: (Please call me when you get here.) 15

W: Irene is having dinner with her boyfriend at a restaurant. They were enjoying their meal until some children started making a lot of noise. A boy is running between the tables, chasing his little sister. Irene is getting upset. She hates it when parents don’t control their children. She wants to have a romantic evening with her boyfriend. She keeps complaining, but her boyfriend tells her to calm down. She eventually calls the waiter and asks him to tell the children’s parents to keep them quiet. In this situation, what would the waiter most likely say to Irene?

Waiter: (I’m sorry, ma’am. I’ll talk to the kids’ parents right now.) 16-17

M: The Seoul city government invites you to participate in its annual Snail Marathon this Sunday morning. W: We need to go to the stationery store today.

M: Let’s go after we have dinner. I’m starving.

W: But we don’t have enough time. It closes at 8:00.

M: (Then we had better go before we eat.) 02

M: Jenny, can we use your laptop for our project?

W: Sorry, my laptop is in the repair shop right now.

M: Oh, the project is due this Tuesday. When will your laptop be ready?

W: (It won’t be ready for a week.) 03

W: Good morning, students. This past summer, I took a trip to Germany to visit a high school there. I met with its principal and we established an exchange program between our two schools. Next semester, we will send 20 of our students to Germany and welcome 20 German students to our school. The program lasts for one month and will be paid for by the school. In order to apply, you must have passed all of your classes with Bs or higher. If you are qualified and interested, please pick up an application form at my office. Thank you for listening and have a great day.

04

W: Stefan, do you have any tips on studying? I don’t know the best way to study.

M: Have you ever tried studying in a group?

W: No. Do you recommend it?

M: Yes. Group study is great because it helps you learn something from the perspectives of others.

W: That’s a good point. I hadn’t thought of that.

M: Also, when you study in a group, you often have to explain things out loud. This helps you remember information.

W: I definitely need help remembering.

M: And finally, other people in the group will be relying on you. This means you’ll be less likely to put off studying.

W: Those are great points. Thanks, Stefan.

[Telephone rings.]

M: Hello?

W: May I speak with Mr. Goodman, please?

M: This is he.

W: Hi, this is Gina Yakamoto. I’m calling about my son, Sam.

M: Oh, hello, Ms. Yakamoto. I hope everything is all right.

W: Well, actually Sam hurt his knee while taking a tennis lesson yesterday.

M: I’m sorry to hear that. Was it serious?

W: The doctor said it’s not a serious injury. But he has to avoid sports for a week, so he can’t participate in your physical education class.

M: I see. Well, have him bring a note from his doctor, and he’ll be excused.

W: Thank you, Mr. Goodman. I’ll make sure he does.

06

M: What’s that picture on your computer?

W: Oh, that’s a photo from a famous circus. I saw their performance last month.

M: Wow! The man on the left is doing an awesome trick.

(22)

W: Do you mean the man who is hanging from a ring with one hand?

M: Yes. Is he holding something?

W: He is holding a ball between his legs.

M: And those two girls are doing handstands.

W: Yes. But my favorite is this guy. He has a string wrapped around his leg.

M: I like the man who is holding a closed umbrella.

W: Yes. I hope I can see them perform again.

07

M: Well, it’s lunchtime, and we don’t have any customers.

W: Yeah... I’m not sure what’s going on.

M: I think we need to advertise.

W: You’re right, but we don’t have the money to hire an advertising agency.

M: Why don’t we just do it ourselves? I was a design major in college.

W: What exactly are you suggesting?

M: I can make an ad on the computer and print it out.

W: Great idea. And we can put it on the bulletin board at the university.

M: Yes, but we’d need permission first. Can you take care of that?

W: Sure. And I think we should also offer free cookies to attract people.

M: Oh, that’s a good idea. I’ll put that in the ad.

08

[Cell phone rings.]

M: Hi, honey. Are you home already?

W: I’m at the door, but I can’t get in the house.

M: Why not? Is there something wrong with the electronic door lock?

W: I don’t know. I entered the passcode on the key pad, but it won’t unlock.

M: Did it make any noise?

W: Yes. It beeped loudly, but it didn’t unlock.

M: Well, I guess that means it is out of order.

W: Yes. So what should I do then?

M: You’d better call a repairman to take a look at it.

W: Okay. When are you coming home?

M: I should be back in about 20 minutes. I’ll hurry.

09

M: Hey, Joanne. Why do you look so happy?

W: I just bought that silk blouse I was telling you about.

M: I thought you said it cost $150. Isn’t that beyond your budget?

W: Yes. I promised myself I wouldn’t spend more than $100.

M: Did the store have a half-price sale?

W: No, but I bought it through their website.

M: I don’t understand. Did it cost less online?

W: It’s a new website, so they’re offering 10% off for online purchases.

M: That’s good. But saving $15 isn’t really a big deal.

W: I also had a $50 gift card my company gave me for Christmas.

M: Oh, I see. So I guess it turned out to be quite a bargain.

W: Yes! I can’t wait to wear it.

10

W: Is this one of your vacation pictures? What is it?

M: That’s a picture of the largest train station in Europe. I went there when I traveled to Berlin.

W: It seems very large.

M: Yeah. It’s so big that you could get lost without a map.

W: Wow, then there must be a lot of people, too.

(23)

M: Yes. I heard about 150,000 passengers visit the station each day.

W: How about trains?

M: There are almost 800 trains a day.

W: That’s a lot. Oh, look at the architecture. The station must be old.

M: Yes, it was built in 1915.

W: It must have been an interesting place to visit on your trip.

M: It definitely was.

11

M: The Lemon Festival, held in the French town of Menton, takes place from the middle of February until the beginning of March. It is visited by more than a quarter of a million people each year. It began in the 1930s with just a few carts of lemons and oranges. These days, however, nearly 150 tons of fruit are used to make all kinds of interesting structures. Each year, there is a different theme, such as world music or Peter Pan. At the festival’s end, the leftover fruit is used to make marmalade or jam.

12

M: Hey, Lisa. Could you help me pick out a cell phone plan?

W: Sure. Let’s see. What’s your main priority?

M: Well, I mainly send text messages. I need at least 100 per month.

W: Okay. How about data? Is that important too?

M: Actually, it is. My old plan had 1.2 GB. But that wasn’t enough.

W: My plan has 2 GB. Is that good?

M: Yes, that would be fine. But more would be better.

W: I see. And finally, what about voice minutes? How about 150 free minutes?

M: I think 100 would be fine. But I do have a strict budget of $50 a month or less.

W: Then I think this one is perfect for you.

13

M: Good morning, Hillary. Did you sleep well?

W: Yes, Dad. Thanks again for letting me have my friends over for a party.

M: Actually, I wanted to talk to you about that.

W: Is something wrong? [Pause] Hey, what happened to all the dirty dishes?

M: Your mother and I had to wash them this morning before we could make breakfast.

W: Sorry. I was going to wash them as soon as I got up.

M: Honey, you promised us that you would clean up before going to bed.

W: I know. But I was really tired after the party.

M: The kitchen was a terrible mess. It took us over two hours to clean everything up.

W: (I’m sorry. I promise it won’t happen again.) 14

W: Oh, I’m having a terrible day.

M: What’s wrong?

W: My friend Alison is mad at me again.

M: Again? What happened this time?

W: Basically, the same thing. She told me a secret, and I accidentally told someone else.

M: This is becoming a real problem. You really can’t keep secrets, can you?

W: I try. But when I’m talking, sometimes they just slip out.

M: Did you apologize to Alison?

W: Yes, but she’s still angry. She says she’s not sure if she can trust me anymore.

M: I don’t blame her. I’d be pretty upset if I were her.

W: But I promised I wouldn’t do it again. What more does she want?

M: (Show her with actions, not just words.) 15

(24)

W: Sienna was on a business trip in New York. On her way from the airport to the hotel, she accidentally left her briefcase in the taxi. By the time she realized it, the taxi had already driven away. She had a very important meeting scheduled for the next morning. Unfortunately, most of her notes and information were in the briefcase. She didn’t know what to do. Just then, her cell phone rang. It was the taxi driver. He had found her number in the briefcase and was waiting for her in the hotel lobby. In this situation, what would Sienna most likely say to the taxi driver?

Sienna: (I really appreciate the effort you made.) 16-17

M: These days, nations all around the world are seeking new sources of energy to replace fossil fuels. Now, the Spanish are testing out a brand-new energy source: olives. Already, more than 300 buildings in the city of Madrid are running on energy made from olive cores. Most

importantly, the energy is 100% nonpolluting. When olives are thrown away to rot, they

naturally give off carbon. But burning the olives to get energy does not create any extra carbon.

One apartment building uses olive power for its heating system. The manager of the building said this type of heating is cleaner than coal and less expensive than most forms of heating.

Another advantage is that it is not affected by changes in fossil fuel prices. The cost of olives is quite steady and predictable.

M: Hey, isn’t today your birthday?

W: Oh, yes, it is. I almost forgot about it.

M: Happy birthday! Why don’t you let me buy you lunch?

W: (Thanks, but I have no time today.) 02

W: The entrance to the zoo is over there. Let’s go!

M: Oh, I left my wallet in the car. Can I go back and get it?

W: Sure, I’ll wait for you here.

M: (Okay, I’ll hurry.) 03

W: Can I have everyone’s attention for a moment? As you’ve probably already heard, Fred Wallace will be leaving the company at the end of this week. Fred started out as a salesperson many years ago and eventually worked his way up to vice president of sales. We’ll be saying goodbye to Fred with a party in the company cafeteria this Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Everyone is welcome, and I’d like to encourage you all to stop by and enjoy some food and drinks. Thanks for listening, and enjoy the rest of your day.

04

W: Reggie, can you come over here for a moment?

M: Yes, Ms. Wilson. What is it?

W: We need to organize the stockroom of our store today. Do you have time to help with that?

M: Yes, I do. I’ve already completed my usual tasks for the day.

W: Great. The first thing you need to do is to stack these boxes against the left wall.

M: Sure. And after that?

W: Please line up everything on the shelves. Make sure it’s all neat. That should take quite a while.

M: Yes, ma’am. Should I sweep the floor after that?

W: Yes, that would be great. You can go home when the job is done.

M: Okay, I’ll start right away.

05

[Doorbell rings.]

W: Yes?

M: Hello, ma’am. I heard you wanted to see me.

W: Yes. I want to complain about your service here.

M: I’m sorry to hear that. Can you tell me what’s wrong?

W: Yes. Look at this room. It wasn’t cleaned this morning.

M: Oh, I’m terribly sorry. I’ll have it taken care of right away.

W: Also, I ordered room service last night and the food was terrible.

M: Was it? Did you let the kitchen staff know?

W: I did, but they said it was too late to replace my order.

M: I sincerely apologize. I’ll remove the food charge from your room bill.

W: I’d appreciate that.

M: I’ll do my best to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

06

M: Here is the design for your booth at the convention.

W: Okay. Let’s take a look at it.

M: There are four shelves against the wall.

W: Okay, that’s good. And where will my company logo and name be?

(26)

M: They will be on this sign at the top of the center wall.

W: And is this a TV screen under the company logo?

M: Yes, I added it because it will be a good way to advertise your products.

W: I think this sign that says “Information” on the front of the desk is a good idea.

M: Thanks. And here are two chairs for customers.

W: Well, it all looks great!

07

W: Hi, Martin. What’s that?

M: It’s a baseball cap. I just bought it.

W: I didn’t realize you were a baseball fan.

M: I wasn’t before. But my friend convinced me to join the local team’s fan club.

W: Do you guys get together regularly?

M: Actually, we go to the stadium once a month to watch a game.

W: That sounds like fun! Can I come with you next time?

M: Sure. But you have to become a member of the club first.

W: All right. How do I do that?

M: Just go to the team’s website and fill out the form.

W: Perfect. I can’t wait to go to a game.

M: It’ll be great. I’ll buy you a hot dog.

08

M: Hi, Molly. You’re really tan. Did you go on vacation?

W: No. But I did spend the day at the beach yesterday.

M: I’m jealous. It was the perfect day to lie out in the sun.

W: Well, I didn’t go to sunbathe. I went to cheer for my sister Beth.

M: Why? What was she doing?

W: She’s a really good volleyball player. There was a competition at the beach.

M: Oh, I see. Did she win?

W: Her team came in second. It was pretty exciting, though.

M: I’m sure it was. Did you guys go swimming afterwards?

W: No. The water was too cold.

09

M: Hello, ma’am. How can I help you?

W: I’m interested in buying two tickets for the opera that’s playing tonight.

M: All right. We have basic, balcony and VIP seats. Which would you like?

W: How much are the VIP seats? I’d love to be right in front of the stage.

M: They’re $200 apiece.

W: Oh, that’s too much. How much are the basic tickets?

M: They are $100 each.

W: That price seems about right. Two basic tickets, please.

M: Okay. Do you have a membership card?

W: No, I don’t. Oh, but I have this coupon I downloaded from your website.

M: I see. This gives you a 50% discount on one ticket.

W: Great. Here is the coupon.

10

W: Danny, I’m worried about going to school this year.

M: What’s the matter?

W: My house is so far away, so it will take forty minutes to get to school by bus.

M: Oh, but the newly opened subway line stops right in front of your house and the school.

W: I didn’t know that. But is it fast enough?

M: Sure. From your house, it will only take about fifteen minutes.

W: How much does the ticket cost?

(27)

M: Well, the fare is normally $2, but there is a special discount for students.

W: Really? What kind of discount?

M: Students can take the train at half price.

W: That makes it really affordable. Thanks for the information.

11

M: Some kinds of South American fire ants can survive floods by getting together in large groups. They hold onto one another, creating large rafts. These rafts are able to float on top of the water. The ants can stay this way until they reach dry land, even if it takes weeks or months to get there. You might think that the ants on the bottom of the rafts would drown. But they don’t. The reason is that small air bubbles get trapped beneath the rafts. The ants that are underwater are able to breathe by using these air bubbles. They are truly amazing insects!

12

M: What are you looking at, Liz?

W: It’s an ad for a computer store. They’re having a laptop sale.

M: What’s wrong with your old laptop?

W: It doesn’t have enough memory. I need one with at least three gigabytes.

M: What’s your budget?

W: I’ve saved up $950, so it can’t be more than that.

M: This one has enough memory and is affordable.

W: But this one is cheaper. And pink is my favorite color.

M: Yes, but the screen is too small. This white one has a screen that is two inches bigger.

W: True. But that’s not really important to me. I’d rather save some money.

M: Well, then that just leaves this one.

13

W: Dad, I want to talk to you about traveling to Europe this summer.

M: I already told you, honey. You’re too young to go abroad alone.

W: Yes, but what if I went to England instead of France?

M: What difference would that make?

W: Doesn’t Aunt Elizabeth live in London?

M: Ah, yes.

W: What if I stayed with her while I was there?

M: Yes, that would be acceptable. But have you spoken to her about it yet?

W: No, I haven’t. I wanted to check with you first.

M: Well, if she says it’s okay, then you have my permission.

W: (In that case, I’ll give her a call and ask.) 14

W: What are you filling out?

M: It’s an application form for Morrison’s Supermarket, Mom.

W: An application form?

M: They’re hiring people as part-time cashiers.

W: I’m sorry, but I can’t allow that. A job will have a bad effect on your schoolwork.

M: But Mom, my grades are fine.

W: Yes, and I want to make sure that you continue to get good grades.

M: But do you remember when I was on the school soccer team? My grades didn’t drop.

W: Yes.

M: And this job would take up less time than soccer practice.

W: Well, I’m not sure you can handle doing two different things at once.

M: (I think I’ve already proved that I can.) 15

W: Lucy and her friends have decided to take a vacation at the beach. They chose the nicest

beach in the area and picked a weekend in August to go. Everyone was given a different task to do in order to prepare for the vacation. One friend had to buy the food, while another was in charge of transportation. It was Lucy’s job to reserve a pair of hotel rooms for them to stay in.

However, when she started calling hotels in that area, she found that they were all booked for that weekend. In this situation, what would Lucy most likely say to her friends?

Lucy: (I think we ought to decide on a different weekend.) 16-17

M: Demodex mites are tiny insects with eight legs. Surprisingly, they make their home on

human skin. Most people have millions of these mites living on their body. They use their needle- like mouths to bite into skin cells. This can badly damage facial skin, leaving it rough and

swollen. Pimples, hair loss, and other skin conditions can also be caused by demodex mites. To kill them and protect your skin, you should start by cleaning your eyelids. This removes oil that demodex mites enjoy. You should also wash your face twice a day, using a cleanser instead of regular soap. And scrub your face regularly to remove dead skin cells. Finally, buy some new bed sheets and get rid of the old ones, in case any mites are hiding on them.

W: I need to drop by the store to buy some insect spray.

M: Oh, okay. I should buy some tape as well.

W: What are you going to do with it?

M: (I need it to wrap some gifts.) 02

M: We should get a new alarm clock for our bedroom.

W: You’re right. Our old one doesn’t work very well.

M: Which one do you want, the square one or the round one?

W: (I think the round one would be better.) 03

W: Welcome, students. The registrar’s office has finalized this year’s academic schedule. The fall and winter terms will be 15 weeks each, including classes, exams, national holidays and breaks.

The fall term will begin on September 1st, and the winter term will start on January 3rd. There will also be six-week spring and summer terms between May and August. The summer term will begin three weeks after the end of spring term final exams. The registration deadline is the end of this month. For more information, a detailed schedule is posted on the bulletin board in the student center.

04

W: I think Shawn spends too much time playing computer games.

M: That’s not good. He needs to study more.

W: You’re right. We’d better get rid of his computer.

M: I don’t think that’s a good idea. Computer games have some positive aspects.

W: Really? Is there anything he can learn from them?

M: Well, they can improve a child’s decision making and problem solving abilities.

W: I didn’t know that.

M: They can also help children relieve stress.

W: Hmm... I guess computer games have some benefits.

M: That’s right. Most people focus on the bad aspects and ignore the good ones.

W: I think I should just set a limit on how much time he can play computer games.

05

W: Hello, sir. How can I help you?

M: Well, I just arrived on an overnight flight from London.

W: Oh, you must be quite tired.

M: I am. But I need to get a car before I check in to my hotel.

W: All right. How long will you need it?

M: Just three days. But I’d like to return it in San Francisco.

W: Okay. And what kind do you prefer? We have a large selection available.

M: To be honest, I’m on a tight budget. I’ll take whatever costs the least.

W: Certainly, sir. That would be the compact model without a radio.

M: That’s fine. Here’s my driver’s license.

W: Thanks. Now, just fill out this form, please.

06

M: I’ve finished designing a Christmas card. What do you think?

W: Wow. You’re such a good artist! I especially like the presents above the sleigh.

M: There are more presents in Santa’s sack, which is decorated with hearts.

W: What’s on Santa’s lap?

M: It’s a doll. Isn’t it cute?
