W: We need to go to the stationery store today.

M: Let’s go after we have dinner. I’m starving.

W: But we don’t have enough time. It closes at 8:00.

M: (Then we had better go before we eat.) 02

M: Jenny, can we use your laptop for our project?

W: Sorry, my laptop is in the repair shop right now.

M: Oh, the project is due this Tuesday. When will your laptop be ready?

W: (It won’t be ready for a week.) 03

W: Good morning, students. This past summer, I took a trip to Germany to visit a high school there. I met with its principal and we established an exchange program between our two schools. Next semester, we will send 20 of our students to Germany and welcome 20 German students to our school. The program lasts for one month and will be paid for by the school. In order to apply, you must have passed all of your classes with Bs or higher. If you are qualified and interested, please pick up an application form at my office. Thank you for listening and have a great day.

W: Stefan, do you have any tips on studying? I don’t know the best way to study.

M: Have you ever tried studying in a group?

W: No. Do you recommend it?

M: Yes. Group study is great because it helps you learn something from the perspectives of others.

W: That’s a good point. I hadn’t thought of that.

M: Also, when you study in a group, you often have to explain things out loud. This helps you remember information.

W: I definitely need help remembering.

M: And finally, other people in the group will be relying on you. This means you’ll be less likely to put off studying.

W: Those are great points. Thanks, Stefan.

[Telephone rings.]

M: Hello?

W: May I speak with Mr. Goodman, please?

M: This is he.

W: Hi, this is Gina Yakamoto. I’m calling about my son, Sam.

M: Oh, hello, Ms. Yakamoto. I hope everything is all right.

W: Well, actually Sam hurt his knee while taking a tennis lesson yesterday.

M: I’m sorry to hear that. Was it serious?

W: The doctor said it’s not a serious injury. But he has to avoid sports for a week, so he can’t participate in your physical education class.

M: I see. Well, have him bring a note from his doctor, and he’ll be excused.

W: Thank you, Mr. Goodman. I’ll make sure he does.

06

M: What’s that picture on your computer?

W: Oh, that’s a photo from a famous circus. I saw their performance last month.

M: Wow! The man on the left is doing an awesome trick.

W: Do you mean the man who is hanging from a ring with one hand?

M: Yes. Is he holding something?

W: He is holding a ball between his legs.

M: And those two girls are doing handstands.

W: Yes. But my favorite is this guy. He has a string wrapped around his leg.

M: I like the man who is holding a closed umbrella.

W: Yes. I hope I can see them perform again.

07

M: Well, it’s lunchtime, and we don’t have any customers.

W: Yeah... I’m not sure what’s going on.

M: I think we need to advertise.

W: You’re right, but we don’t have the money to hire an advertising agency.

M: Why don’t we just do it ourselves? I was a design major in college.

W: What exactly are you suggesting?

M: I can make an ad on the computer and print it out.

W: Great idea. And we can put it on the bulletin board at the university.

M: Yes, but we’d need permission first. Can you take care of that?

W: Sure. And I think we should also offer free cookies to attract people.

M: Oh, that’s a good idea. I’ll put that in the ad.

08

[Cell phone rings.]

M: Hi, honey. Are you home already?

W: I’m at the door, but I can’t get in the house.

M: Why not? Is there something wrong with the electronic door lock?

W: I don’t know. I entered the passcode on the key pad, but it won’t unlock.

M: Did it make any noise?

W: Yes. It beeped loudly, but it didn’t unlock.

M: Well, I guess that means it is out of order.

W: Yes. So what should I do then?

M: You’d better call a repairman to take a look at it.

W: Okay. When are you coming home?

M: I should be back in about 20 minutes. I’ll hurry.

09

M: Hey, Joanne. Why do you look so happy?

W: I just bought that silk blouse I was telling you about.

M: I thought you said it cost $150. Isn’t that beyond your budget?

W: Yes. I promised myself I wouldn’t spend more than $100.

M: Did the store have a half-price sale?

W: No, but I bought it through their website.

M: I don’t understand. Did it cost less online?

W: It’s a new website, so they’re offering 10% off for online purchases.

M: That’s good. But saving $15 isn’t really a big deal.

W: I also had a $50 gift card my company gave me for Christmas.

M: Oh, I see. So I guess it turned out to be quite a bargain.

W: Yes! I can’t wait to wear it.

10

W: Is this one of your vacation pictures? What is it?

M: That’s a picture of the largest train station in Europe. I went there when I traveled to Berlin.

W: It seems very large.

M: Yeah. It’s so big that you could get lost without a map.

W: Wow, then there must be a lot of people, too.

M: Yes. I heard about 150,000 passengers visit the station each day.

W: How about trains?

M: There are almost 800 trains a day.

W: That’s a lot. Oh, look at the architecture. The station must be old.

M: Yes, it was built in 1915.

W: It must have been an interesting place to visit on your trip.

M: It definitely was.

11

M: The Lemon Festival, held in the French town of Menton, takes place from the middle of February until the beginning of March. It is visited by more than a quarter of a million people each year. It began in the 1930s with just a few carts of lemons and oranges. These days, however, nearly 150 tons of fruit are used to make all kinds of interesting structures. Each year, there is a different theme, such as world music or Peter Pan. At the festival’s end, the leftover fruit is used to make marmalade or jam.

12

M: Hey, Lisa. Could you help me pick out a cell phone plan?

W: Sure. Let’s see. What’s your main priority?

M: Well, I mainly send text messages. I need at least 100 per month.

W: Okay. How about data? Is that important too?

M: Actually, it is. My old plan had 1.2 GB. But that wasn’t enough.

W: My plan has 2 GB. Is that good?

M: Yes, that would be fine. But more would be better.

W: I see. And finally, what about voice minutes? How about 150 free minutes?

M: I think 100 would be fine. But I do have a strict budget of $50 a month or less.

W: Then I think this one is perfect for you.

13

M: Good morning, Hillary. Did you sleep well?

W: Yes, Dad. Thanks again for letting me have my friends over for a party.

M: Actually, I wanted to talk to you about that.

W: Is something wrong? [Pause] Hey, what happened to all the dirty dishes?

M: Your mother and I had to wash them this morning before we could make breakfast.

W: Sorry. I was going to wash them as soon as I got up.

M: Honey, you promised us that you would clean up before going to bed.

W: I know. But I was really tired after the party.

M: The kitchen was a terrible mess. It took us over two hours to clean everything up.

W: (I’m sorry. I promise it won’t happen again.) 14

W: Oh, I’m having a terrible day.

M: What’s wrong?

W: My friend Alison is mad at me again.

M: Again? What happened this time?

W: Basically, the same thing. She told me a secret, and I accidentally told someone else.

M: This is becoming a real problem. You really can’t keep secrets, can you?

W: I try. But when I’m talking, sometimes they just slip out.

M: Did you apologize to Alison?

W: Yes, but she’s still angry. She says she’s not sure if she can trust me anymore.

M: I don’t blame her. I’d be pretty upset if I were her.

W: But I promised I wouldn’t do it again. What more does she want?

M: (Show her with actions, not just words.) 15

W: Sienna was on a business trip in New York. On her way from the airport to the hotel, she accidentally left her briefcase in the taxi. By the time she realized it, the taxi had already driven away. She had a very important meeting scheduled for the next morning. Unfortunately, most of her notes and information were in the briefcase. She didn’t know what to do. Just then, her cell phone rang. It was the taxi driver. He had found her number in the briefcase and was waiting for her in the hotel lobby. In this situation, what would Sienna most likely say to the taxi driver?

Sienna: (I really appreciate the effort you made.) 16-17

M: These days, nations all around the world are seeking new sources of energy to replace fossil fuels. Now, the Spanish are testing out a brand-new energy source: olives. Already, more than 300 buildings in the city of Madrid are running on energy made from olive cores. Most

importantly, the energy is 100% nonpolluting. When olives are thrown away to rot, they

naturally give off carbon. But burning the olives to get energy does not create any extra carbon.

One apartment building uses olive power for its heating system. The manager of the building said this type of heating is cleaner than coal and less expensive than most forms of heating.

Another advantage is that it is not affected by changes in fossil fuel prices. The cost of olives is quite steady and predictable.
