W: Didn’t you promise to clean out the garage?

M: Oh, right. I’ve been really busy though, Mom.

W: I know. But you should have kept your promise.

M: (I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.) 02

M: How do you think you did on the test?

W: I feel good about it. I studied hard, and I felt prepared.

M: Good for you. When will you get your score?

W: (It will be posted next week.) 03

W: Good evening, everyone. May I have your attention, please? According to the latest forecasts from the national weather center, a large winter storm is expected to hit our city sometime tomorrow morning. Although it will likely start as rain, it is expected to turn to snow as

temperatures quickly drop during the day. The snow will be very heavy. Road conditions will be poor, so please drive tomorrow only if it is absolutely necessary. Many schools and businesses will probably be closed, so stay tuned to this station for all the latest updates and information.

W: Where do you want to go for lunch?

M: We don’t have much time, so let’s just go to Super Burger.

W: The fast-food restaurant? You know I’m trying to eat a healthy diet.

M: But they recently changed their menu to make it healthier.

W: So they stopped serving greasy burgers and fries?

M: No. But they have a diet burger served without the bread. And they use lower-fat oil to make their French fries.

W: That’s good. But how do we know the food is really healthier?

M: They now include nutrition information on their menus.

W: Wow. It sounds like it’s really changed.

M: It has. And you can also order a low-calorie salad if you want.

W: That sounds good. Let’s go!

05

W: Good morning, sir. Did you sleep well?

M: Well, it’s always hard to sleep in a new bed, but it was okay.

W: Is there something I can help you with today?

M: Actually, I was wondering if you could suggest some local sites to see.

W: Oh, so you’re not here on business?

M: No, I’m not. I just came to enjoy your beautiful city.

W: In that case, take a look at this map. All the best places are marked.

M: Great. I’ll look it over while I have breakfast.

W: You do know that breakfast is included in the price of your room, don’t you?

M: Oh, I had forgotten.

W: Just tell the waitress your room number when you place your order.

M: Thanks, you’ve been very helpful.

06

W: We finally reached the top of the mountain. I’m so hungry now!

M: Me, too. I really worked up an appetite.

W: Let’s have lunch! What did you bring?

M: I made sandwiches that look like faces.

W: How cute! How about dessert?

M: I brought some strawberries and cherries.

W: They look really delicious. You also brought kimbab and some small sausages.

M: Yes, these sausages look like octopuses.

W: Yes, they do. And here are two drinks—one for each of us.

M: Thanks. This is perfect.

07

W: What are you doing out here, Andre?

M: I’m taking a break. I’ve been in the library all day.

W: Me, too. I just stepped out for some fresh air.

M: Have you been preparing for the science midterm?

W: Of course. It’s just two weeks away.

M: Don’t forget that we have to give a presentation, too.

W: That’s right. I meant to ask if you had the guidelines for it. I lost mine.

M: Sure. I can make you a copy if you’d like.

W: Thanks, I’d really appreciate it.

M: Where are you sitting? I’ll bring it to you.

W: I’m on the third floor, just next to the computer room.

M: Okay. Well, I guess I’ll go back inside now.

[Telephone rings.]

M: Queen City Clothing Store. How can I help you?

W: Hi. I bought a skirt at your store yesterday, but the zipper was broken.

M: I’m sorry. If you bring it back, we’ll gladly exchange it for another.

W: Well, I can’t come back to your store in person.

M: If you don’t have time today, you can visit us another day.

W: The problem is that I don’t live in Queen City.

M: Do you live far away?

W: Yes. Your store is a three-hour drive from here.

M: Then why don’t you send it to us by mail? The store will cover the charges.

W: Great. Can you suggest a delivery service I can use?

M: Sure. I’ll give you their contact information.

09

M: Today is the big summer sale at the electronics store.

W: Great! Let’s buy a few things for the house.

M: Okay. Here’s the advertisement from the newspaper.

W: Let me see. Oh, here’s the heater you wanted to get. Wow, it’s $100.

M: But there’s a coupon for 30% off.

W: So it would only be $70.

M: Let’s get it then. And what else should we buy?

W: We need a new rice cooker. This one is $80.

M: Hmm... Isn’t there a discount?

W: No, there isn’t. But I think the price is already quite reasonable.

M: Okay. Well, we can get that, too. Let’s go shopping!

W: Now, children, we are about to enter the aquarium. There are a few very important things to keep in mind. First, do not feed the animals anything. You will have an opportunity to feed the seals and the dolphins, but only at a special time. Plus, you must only feed them the food that is provided, not things like chips or candy. Also, please do not lean over the tanks. Your glasses or pens could fall out of your pockets, and this would be very dangerous to the animals. I would like to see you on your best behavior, so no running or shouting. Finally, try to stay together so you

don’t get lost. Any questions?

[Telephone rings.]

M: YBC Radio Station.

W: Hi. My name is Anna Myers. I called earlier about bringing my son for a visit.

M: Ah, yes. How about coming for Jessica’s show tomorrow morning?

W: Tomorrow is good. Unfortunately, I’m busy all morning.

M: Well, we also have afternoon and evening shows. Does he like movies?

W: Yes, but he has a Spanish class from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.

M: That’s okay. We still have some programs that fit your schedule. What else is he interested in?

W: Well, I love pop songs. But my son wants to be a journalist.

M: I see. Then I know which program he would enjoy most.

W: Great! I really appreciate your help.

13

[Cell phone rings.]

W: Hello?

M: Bella? This is Anthony.

W: Oh, hi, Anthony. It’s great to hear your voice. It’s been a while since we talked.

M: I know. So how do you like living in the big city now?

W: Well, I was really afraid I would miss our hometown.

M: Yes, everyone here is worried that you’re lonely.

W: Quite the opposite! I’ve already met so many new people here.

M: Really? That’s great. So you’ve been busy?

W: Yes. There’s so much to do here and so many places to see.

M: So it sounds like there was nothing to worry about after all.

W: (I do miss you guys, but I’m very happy.) 14

W: Can you lend me 50 dollars? I have to buy a present for my sister.

M: Okay. But you got paid last week. Did you spend all your money?

W: No, but I don’t have much left.

M: Really? Did you make any big purchases?

W: No. I just wasted it on little things like snacks and movies.

M: If you keep spending money like that, you’ll never save any.

W: I worry about that. But I don’t know how to use money wisely.

M: Actually, I also had the same problem. But now I save almost half of my paycheck each month.

W: Really? Could you give me any tips?

M: (How about keeping a daily record of all your expenses?) 15

W: Minsu is a young teacher at a high school. Although he has only been teaching for a year, the principal chose him to give a farewell speech to the seniors on graduation day. He is very

popular with the students and quite funny, so everyone expects him to give a good speech.

However, Minsu gets very nervous when he has to speak in front of large groups of people. On the day of the speech, he is sweating and his hands are shaking. The principal notices this and goes over to Minsu. In this situation, what would the principal most likely say to Minsu?

Principal: (You should just relax and be confident.) 16-17

M: When we think about agriculture, fruits, vegetables and grains are some of the things that most likely come to mind. But we should also add herbs to that list. Herbs are a variety of plants that are valued for their taste, smell and other fine qualities. In cooking, they are added in small amounts to make food taste and smell better. Throughout history, they have also been the main ingredient of many traditional medicines. For example, they have been used to treat such diseases as depression, stress and diabetes. Some herbs are placed in homes for decoration to make the air smell nice. Furthermore, many herbs serve more than one purpose. Indigo, for instance, is an ingredient in medicine, as well as natural hair and fabric dyes. We may not think of them often, but herbs are clearly an important crop.
