W: I need to drop by the store to buy some insect spray.

M: Oh, okay. I should buy some tape as well.

W: What are you going to do with it?

M: (I need it to wrap some gifts.) 02

M: We should get a new alarm clock for our bedroom.

W: You’re right. Our old one doesn’t work very well.

M: Which one do you want, the square one or the round one?

W: (I think the round one would be better.) 03

W: Welcome, students. The registrar’s office has finalized this year’s academic schedule. The fall and winter terms will be 15 weeks each, including classes, exams, national holidays and breaks.

The fall term will begin on September 1st, and the winter term will start on January 3rd. There will also be six-week spring and summer terms between May and August. The summer term will begin three weeks after the end of spring term final exams. The registration deadline is the end of this month. For more information, a detailed schedule is posted on the bulletin board in the student center.

W: I think Shawn spends too much time playing computer games.

M: That’s not good. He needs to study more.

W: You’re right. We’d better get rid of his computer.

M: I don’t think that’s a good idea. Computer games have some positive aspects.

W: Really? Is there anything he can learn from them?

M: Well, they can improve a child’s decision making and problem solving abilities.

W: I didn’t know that.

M: They can also help children relieve stress.

W: Hmm... I guess computer games have some benefits.

M: That’s right. Most people focus on the bad aspects and ignore the good ones.

W: I think I should just set a limit on how much time he can play computer games.

05

W: Hello, sir. How can I help you?

M: Well, I just arrived on an overnight flight from London.

W: Oh, you must be quite tired.

M: I am. But I need to get a car before I check in to my hotel.

W: All right. How long will you need it?

M: Just three days. But I’d like to return it in San Francisco.

W: Okay. And what kind do you prefer? We have a large selection available.

M: To be honest, I’m on a tight budget. I’ll take whatever costs the least.

W: Certainly, sir. That would be the compact model without a radio.

M: That’s fine. Here’s my driver’s license.

W: Thanks. Now, just fill out this form, please.

06

M: I’ve finished designing a Christmas card. What do you think?

W: Wow. You’re such a good artist! I especially like the presents above the sleigh.

M: There are more presents in Santa’s sack, which is decorated with hearts.

W: What’s on Santa’s lap?

M: It’s a doll. Isn’t it cute?

W: Yes. But I don’t think two reindeer are enough to pull the sleigh.

M: Hmm... You’re right. I will add two more. How about the full moon?

W: It’s nice that you drew a boy waving to Santa on it.

M: Thank you. I’ll send this card to my parents.

W: Oh, I’m sure they’ll love it.

07

M: Hi, Mindy. The dance competition is just three weeks away.

W: I know. We really should start preparing for it.

M: Have you thought about the music we’re going to dance to?

W: Yes, I chose a song. And I’ve decided on most of the dance moves we’ll do.

M: Great. So now all we have to do is start practicing our routine.

W: That’s right. Do you think you could reserve the school’s dance studio for us?

M: Sure. I’ll see if it’s available on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

W: Terrific. Meanwhile, I’ll start shopping for outfits for us to wear.

M: Sounds good. I’m pretty excited about this.

W: Me, too. But we have to work hard or we’ll have no chance of winning.

08

W: Thanks for taking me to the amusement park today, Brad. I had a great time.

M: Me, too. And this food was delicious. I was so hungry.

W: Well, dinner is on me.

M: Thanks. [Pause] Is something wrong, Sue?

W: Well... I can’t seem to find my wallet.

M: Uh-oh. You may have dropped it at the amusement park.

W: Oh, I think I left it at home by mistake.

M: Oh, really?

W: You paid for everything today, so I didn’t notice until now.

M: Don’t worry about it. I can pay for dinner, too.

W: I can’t believe this! I promise I’ll buy you lunch tomorrow.

09

W: Hello, can you help me?

M: Yes, of course. What can I do for you?

W: I need some cooking supplies to make cupcakes for my boyfriend.

M: Then you need several basic ingredients.

W: I have milk and eggs. But how much will flour and baking powder cost?

M: They’re $4 each. You also have to buy a cupcake pan to bake them in.

W: How much is this one?

M: It’s $7.

W: Okay, then I’ll take the pan, as well as the flour and baking powder.

M: What kind of decorations are you planning to put on top?

W: I don’t need any decorations. Here’s $20.

M: Thanks. Here is your change.

10

W: This zoo is great. Look! There are giant pandas!

M: The sign says they are native to south central China.

W: That’s right. And they eat lots of bamboo.

M: I wonder if that’s their main source of food.

W: It is. They can eat as much as 14 kg of bamboo in a single day.

M: Wow! That’s a lot! And they’re much bigger than I expected.

W: Yeah. They can grow up to nearly two meters.

M: Hey, you know a lot about pandas.

W: Yeah... I really like pandas. But, I’m worried that they’re endangered.

M: Are they? I didn’t know that.

W: Yes. There are fewer than 3,000 alive in the wild.

M: Oh, we have to do something to protect them.

M: Dadaism was an art movement that began in Switzerland during World War I. Its peak was from 1916 to 1920. After their experiences in the cruel war, many artists lost confidence in their culture. Dadaism was their way of protesting against war and a rigid society. As a result, it was sometimes considered “anti-art.” Whereas traditional art was generally pleasing to the eye, Dada art could be ugly. And while traditional art usually contained a social or moral meaning, Dada art often did not. In short, Dadaism rejected all the previous standards in art.

12

[Telephone rings.]

M: Hello. You’ve reached the Community Cultural Center.

W: Hi. I’d like to sign up for some courses.

M: I see. Which ones do you want to take?

W: I’d like to take two courses: one for vocal training and one for acting.

M: Are you at the beginner or intermediate level?

W: I want to take the beginner course for vocal training.

M: Okay. It’s held on Wednesday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

W: Oh, I can’t come on Wednesdays. What about the acting course?

M: There are evening classes starting at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursdays, depending on the level.

W: Hmm... I don’t care about the level, but I can’t make it at 5 o’clock.

M: Then the other lesson is perfect for you.

W: Okay. Please sign me up.

13

W: Wow, I just heard you talking to your American friend. Your English is really good!

M: Thanks. I try to practice so that I don’t forget it.

W: Where did you learn to speak English?

M: Actually, I was born in America and lived there until I was 12 years old.

W: Oh, that’s why you sound so natural.

M: I didn’t have many chances to speak Korean there.

W: Well, your Korean is perfect now.

M: I don’t think so. I still have trouble with some difficult words.

W: Then why don’t we do a language exchange?

M: So you can help me with my Korean, and I can help you with English?

W: Yes. That’ll help both of us.

M: (Good idea! When do you want to start?) 14

M: Wow, we’ve gotten a lot of work done in the past few hours.

W: I agree. Let’s relax for 15 minutes and then get back to work.

M: Would you like me to get you something to drink?

W: Thanks. I’d like some orange juice, if you have any.

M: [Pause] I have some. Here you go.

W: Thanks. I was just looking at all these model cars and robots you have.

M: I made them. It’s my hobby.

W: Can I see this one?

M: Sure, just be careful. They’re delicate, and I worked very hard on them.

W: [Pause] Oops! It just slipped out of my hands!

M: My robot! I can’t believe you broke it.

W: (I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to drop it.)

W: Nicole is going on a picnic with her boyfriend. It’s his birthday today, so she promised she would take care of everything. She got up early to put together a picnic basket, which included kimbab, fruit, and drinks. Now Nicole and her boyfriend are at the park, getting ready to eat what she made. Her boyfriend looks happy to see all the food, especially the kimbab — it’s his favorite. She wishes him a happy birthday and says that she hopes he enjoys what she made this morning. In this situation, what would Nicole’s boyfriend most likely say to Nicole?

Nicole’s boyfriend: (Thanks. This has been the best birthday ever.) 16-17

M: Traveling to other countries is a great experience I recommend to everyone. But it’s

important to remember that all cultures are not the same. An act or gesture that might be fine in one place could be an insult in another. For example, in India, be careful not to point your feet at anyone. Even if it’s done by mistake, you should apologize immediately. Although waving “hello”

is one of the most common gestures in other cultures, it is very offensive in Greece. And in China, never rest your chopsticks on top of your rice bowl. This is something that is done at funerals and will remind people of death and sadness. Also, you should be careful about how you treat children in Thailand. Although Thai people are very friendly, they will get very upset if you touch their children’s heads, because they believe their souls rest there.
