Middle-school Students’ Ability for Experimental Design in the Process of Inquiry

Two inquiry tasks were developed to investigate middle-school studentsï processes of building experimental designs for the tasks. We applied each task to four participants, so there were eight participants in this study. Each participant needed two hours, on average, to complete the task.
We analyzed the worksheets written by the participants, the researchers’ observations and the protocols of interviews. From the analysis, we found that the participants had various difficulties in understanding the purpose of the task. Some of them felt that researchers’ guidance helped them to recognize the goal of the task, but some of them did not. Next, we analyzed the participants’
suggested operate variable, dependent variable, and control variables for each task. We found that

the participants had difficulties in setting appropriate variables, especially control variables, for the task. Finally, we found that some participants failed to design the experimental process for the task correctly even though they had selected an appropriate experimental apparatus.
