‘통행수단 간의 연계’가 필요합니다

Nam I would like to turn our topic to public transportation. Do you agree that the public transportation will play more significant role, even if autonomous vehicles take their passengers?

Jay I agree that they will have a more significant role, but I expect transit systems to change quite a bit for this to happen. These changes will be in removing the inefficient services that currently exist in low-demand areas out of necessity, and improving the vehicle availability and service quality in the higher-demand areas and origin-destination pairs. Fixed route and fixed schedule services in low-density areas drain a lot of productivity from current transit systems, but autonomous vehicles and on-demand shared-ride options are much more efficient there. They will significantly add to the accessibility to transit, and can improve transit ridership by feeding the transit systems which will then be operating in the efficient sections without the first-mile/last-mile concerns. The sections of the network of high travel, where we need efficient larger vehicles and higher frequency to avoid congestion, will still have to be transit. The overall ridership will only be higher in such an efficient transit system, which will then be a part of the ‘continuum of modal options’ I mentioned above. I carefully avoid calling it

‘public transit’ because these systems may in reality be public-private systems in which subscription-firms that offer autonomous (smaller) vehicle services become an integral part of an urban areas transportation system.

Nam The concept of “Continuum of modal options” must involve multiple transfers that are regarded as causing serious disutility. Do you think that people will be in favor of the system although it comes with inconvenience? And What do you think that travelers will do when they are free from driving?

Jay That is a good question! I am not sure that I can predict the evolution of the travelers’ activities. In an efficient and coordinated system, there may be more transfers without serious transfer time disutility, and that may reduce the time in each shared-ride autonomous vehicle. Perhaps it will be more of eating, napping and internet browsing of shorter time periods, as opposed to work activities of uncertain work durations that may be longer than the travel times in such vehicles. The traveler time will definitely be more productive, in any event.

Nam Can you tell us your opinion about the role of transportation engineers in the future?

Jay I believe transportation engineers in the next decade or more will need to be very creative, as a variety of system design options will be possible. Those who are innovative will have an opportunity to succeed. Due to technology-induced transformations in the business side of the mobility world, the transportation engineers can help the society, the businesses, and themselves, by having better background in technology and business entrepreneurship. Knowing what was being done in the past is less important than knowing what is in the realm of possibilities in the future.

Nam I am so glad someone as thoughtful as you is thinking about future mobility. Your insights are much appreciated. Professor Jay, it was great talking to you. Thank you.
