M: Jenny, you look very fashionable today.

W: You think so? I just bought this outfit last weekend.

M: Seriously, it looks really nice on you. Where did you get it?

W: __________________________________________________________

W: I heard you’re planning to go to Twin Lakes Campsite.

M: Yes, next weekend, but I didn’t make a reservation yet.

W: You didn’t? That place is very popular so I wonder if there are any spaces available.

M: __________________________________________________________

M: Mom, I’m stressed out recently because I keep forgetting important things.

W: What are you talking about, Jason?

M: This morning, I had a great idea for my science project, but I can’t remember it now.

W: __________________________________________________________

M: All right, students. I hope you went over your partner’s writing. Now, I would like you to write some comments on that paper. We’ve learned about giving effective feedback, right? Most importantly, it is necessary to support your comments with concrete examples and suggestions. It is difficult to understand comments like “this is unclear” or “this is badly organized”. Instead, write comments like “this is unclear because there is no specific example” or “it’ll be better organized if you move this to the conclusion”. You need to help your partners understand the problems and how they can make them better. The more specific your comments are, the more helpful they are.

W: Some experts say that all digital users are now at risk of identity theft.

You might not think this is a serious problem, but the truth is nobody’s information is safe. There are a number of ways stolen data are put to bad use. If it only produces an increase in spam mail, that’s not too bad.

But it can be much worse. Your ID number could be used to commit a serious crime. We’re also partly responsible when this happens. To protect ourselves, we need to change passwords frequently and check websites before we join them. Otherwise, we’re more likely to expose our personal information, and it may be used for illegal purposes.

M: Christine, why the long face? Anything wrong?

W: Mr. Baker, I like history, but I don’t get good scores.

M: I see. What do you think is the problem?

W: I’m not good at memorizing historical events, such as who did what and when it happened. What should I do?

M: Have you observed how your classmates memorize facts?

W: Well, Sophia always makes songs. She changes the words of songs and replaces them with historical characters and events. But this doesn’t seem to work for me.

M: Then why don’t you read historical comic books? I believe it may help you.

W: You mean, with the comic books, I can memorize historical events better?

M: Exactly. Most of them are easy and fun to read. In addition, the visual images can be very effective.

W: I like comic books. I think it’ll work.

M: Claire, you look so tired.

W: Actually, I feel frustrated because of Jane and Sally.

M: Your roommates? What’s the problem?

W: They don’t follow dormitory rules. They stay up late and keep talking even after the lights-out time.

M: It must be hard to sleep because of them, right?

W: Yeah. They’re driving me crazy. Sometimes their talking continues until 2 a.m.

M: So did you do something about that?

W: Yeah, I asked them several times to stop making noise when we’re in bed, but they have just ignored me.

M: They don’t seem to care about you at all, breaking the rules.

W: No, they don’t care about other people. I believe, in the dormitory, we should not make noise after lights-out.

M: You’re right.

M: Hmm... I think the bumper must be replaced.

W: I see. Can I get other service work done on my car while it’s in the shop?

I want the signal lamp and the brake pedal to be checked.

M: Sure, but that expense won’t be covered by your car insurance. Is it okay with you?

W: Yes. When can I get my car back then?

M: Well, I have a few more cars to repair. It may take one or two days.

W: This morning, Mr. Parker called me to his office and directed me to push ahead your new shoes proposal.

M: Wow! I can’t believe it.

W: I’m excited too. But I think you need to complement the idea to lead it to actual manufacture.

M: Sure. Where should I start?

W: First of all, I want you to survey some potential customers.

M: Okay.

W: I’ll bring you some questionnaires that I used before. You’ll be able to use them after you make some changes.

M: All right. Thank you, Ms. Jackson.

M: Honey, did you buy Audrey’s birthday cake?

W: Yeah, I bought it at Jimmy’s bakery. You know she loves his cakes.

M: Great! Did you also get candles?

W: Yes, I did.

M: Good. I’ve got a call from Audrey that she’ll arrive any minute now.

W: Oh, so soon! Why don’t we set the table? [ Pause] Oh, no!

M: What’s the problem?

W: I think I left her present at the bakery.

M: You mean the art book you bought for her?

W: Yes. While I was paying, I put it on the counter and forgot to pick it up.

I’d better go get it right away.

M: Twice a week sounds perfect for me. I’ll take that program.

W: Okay. May I ask your major? We provide a 10 percent discount for students belonging to the language department.

M: Yeah, I’m a freshman majoring in English.

W: Then you can have the discount. And you need this textbook for the class. It’s $ 20.

M: Does the 10 percent discount apply to the book as well?

W: I’m sorry it doesn’t.

M: All right. I’ll buy the textbook anyway.

W: Okay. Please fill out this form.

M: Hi, Julie. Oh, is this the cat you’re always talking about?

W: Yes, she is. I adopted her at Edmonton Cat Festival last year.

M: Oh, I’m interested in adopting my own cat. Is it held annually?

W: Actually, it’ll run at the city convention center next Saturday.

M: That’s not far from my place. I’ll drive there.

W: Good idea. There is paid parking in the building garage, but you can park for free at the back of the building.

M: I see. What programs do they have?

W: There will be cat yoga, homeless cat adoption, and cat care lessons.

M: It sounds like the festival is for real cat lovers.

W: Yeah, its mission is to raise money to support non-profit organizations that help cats in need.

M: Sounds interesting! I’d like to make some contribution.

W: If you donate, you’ll get a small toy cat souvenir. See you there.

M: All right, students. On this slide, you see a sample of sugarcane crops.

Sugarcane is native to the tropical regions of South Asia. How tall does it look here? Actually it varies from two to six meters tall. As an economically important seed plant, it is the world’s largest crop by production quantity. Today, Brazil is famous as the largest producer in the world. The Persians discovered sugarcane in India between the 6th and 4th centuries BC and adopted and spread sugarcane agriculture. By the 18th century, people across the world, including the Caribbean, South America, Indian Ocean and Pacific island nations, began their own sugarcane plantations. Let’s check what happened because of these increasing numbers of sugarcane plantations in the next slide.

M: Honey, let’s choose a car to rent for our trip.

W: Okay. Have you found a website to book one?

M: Yes, I have. Take a look. Standard type is usually okay with us, but I think we’d better choose a minivan this time.

W: You’re right. We have some luggage to carry around. But I think more than $ 50 per day is too expensive.

M: I agree with you. Let’s choose one under that price.

W: Charlie, we shouldn’t forget to include a baby seat for Tommy.

M: Of course not. That’s the first thing I had in mind.

W: Where do you prefer to pick up the car, at the airport or downtown?

M: We’re planning to stay at the hotel for the first two days, and there’s an airport shuttle that’ll take us there.

W: Then it’ll be better to pick it up downtown.

M: Perfect! I’m so excited about our trip!

M: Hi, Stacy. You look so excited.

W: I’m throwing a dinner party at home for my friends.

W: Yes, I’m planning to make beefsteak and salmon salad.

M: I heard you’re good at cooking. I should learn some tips from you.

W: Practice is the best way to get better. You can follow easy recipes from a cook book first.

M: I tried a few times, but the results were disappointing. For me, steak is the most difficult.

W: I used to struggle with steak, too.

M: I don’t know why my steak is not tender. I want to cook nice, juicy ones.

W: Try brushing both sides of a piece of steak with olive oil and pan-fry it.

It helps keep its juices inside.

M: Oh, I’ll give it a try. I hope that will make a difference.

W: Dennis, why are you holding several newspapers?

M: I read them all every day.

W: Really? Is there any reason you read so many newspapers?

M: I read them to develop an objective viewpoint.

W: Do you really need all these papers to have a balanced perspective?

M: You know, newspapers have their own views on controversial topics, so if you read only one newspaper, you can become biased.

W: That makes sense. Can you give me an example?

M: Sure. These two newspapers have extreme opinions on several topics like the economy, housing, and childbirth grant policies.

W: That’s a broad range of topics.

M: Yeah, you see, this one insists on corporate tax cuts for economic development while that one supports a corporate tax increase for public welfare.

W: Now I see why you read so many kinds of newspapers.

M: __________________________________________________________

M: Welcome back to Foods For Health! Last time we talked about bone.

Today, I’d like to talk about our brain. Many people think the brain requires a lot of sugar to function well, but sugar doesn’t help because it can overfeed the cells, making it hard to focus well. So let me introduce some foods beneficial to your brain. Do you remember seeds and dairy products that I recommended for strong bones? They’re also good for your brain. Seeds can be a great source of power for your brain without any side effects. All dairy products play a beneficial role in improving brain functions such as thought processing and concentration. Green vegetables are another option to make your brain strong since eating lots of green vegetables improves blood flow. Lastly, include fish in your diets.

It’s said that a fatty acid found in fish boosts memory function by 15 percent. In summary, take care of what you eat, and you’ll be able to experience increased brain performance.
