Purpose To explore ways to achieve the vision of Green City through presentations and discussions by experts on the topic of “Green City for Human Betterment”

The Eastern Regional Organization for Planning Human Settlements (EAROPH) is a UN-affiliated organization established in New Delhi, India in 1954 that has contributed to urban planning and housing policies of many countries in the East Asia region through interactions among experts in private and public sectors and academia. 82 organizations and 340 people from 28 countries in the Asia and Pacific regions are participating in the EAROPH as members. The Regional Congress and the World Congress are held in rotation each year. Korea, starting from the 4th World Congress in 1972, has hosted the World Congress on three different occasions. 23rd EAROPH World Congress between October 17 and 19, 2012 with the City of Daegu at the Daegu EXCO, with over 300 urban experts from 22 countries participating. The World Congress sought to explore ways to achieve the vision of Green City through presentations and discussions by experts on the topic of “Green City for Human Betterment".

First, in the keynote address, Yang Soo-gil, Commissioner of the Presidential Committee on Green Growth, Abha Joshi-Ghani, Director of the World Bank Institute, and Khairiah Talha, Honorary Chair of the EAROPH gave speeches on the trends in Green City development and the development track.

In addition, urban experts from the KRIHS, academic institutions overseas and in Korea chaired each session. The experts and scholars had presentations, discussions, and question and answer sessions for two days on a variety of topics, including: Green City, Sustainable City, and Environment-Oriented City. The participants shared environment-friendly development policies to improve the quality of life in their respective countries, mentioning that they were able to gain insights that were applicable to their countries. They also thought that it was a good opportunity to build networks with experts through the EAROPH.

Meeting of the Group of Mayors

Kim Beom-il, Mayor of Daegu, Park Yang-ho, President of the KRIHS, Mdm. Norliza Hashim, Secretary General of the EAROPH, and a group of mayors from other South Asian Countries had a meeting in which they shared their experiences with the building of Green City and the difficulties and achievements in implementing policies.

Meeting with the EAROPH Committees and Member States

In a meeting with the 30 delegates from the member states of the EAROPH, plans were made for the operation of the organization and the EAROPH Regional Congress which was to be held in 2013.

Park Yang-ho, the President of the KRIHS was elected as the next Chairman of the EAROPH, and Korea was recognized for its green city development and growth and for its efforts in providing the vision. Korea is expected to play more important roles in the years to come.

Youth Leaders’ Forum

The Youth Leaders’ Forum, provided to high school and college students in Korea in order to draw interest and facilitate participation in the EAROPH World Congress, held an exhibit contest under the topic of “Realizing Green City for Happiness.” The participating students mentioned that they were able to broaden their understanding of the lives, cultures, and environment of modern citizens and that they had opportunities to think again about Green City and sustainable and environment-friendly lives.

•TechnicalTourandFieldTrips

The EAROPH participants experienced how Green City is built in the Daegu region, by having a technical tour, the EXCO green building tour, a street tour, a visit to gas resource facilities of the Bangcheon-ri Landfill in Daegu, and experienced the harmony between the modern and traditional city and the balanced urban development of Daegu. During the field trips to Seoul and Sejong, the participants visited Gyeongbokgung Palace, the TOPIS of Seoul, and the Sejong Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency, seeing the plans for new cities and the progresses as well as the exploration of various policies, technologies, and planning methodologies for sustainable urban development.
