This launching seminar was the last regional launching seminar of the World Bank UKP, where representatives from South Asian countries such as India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, and experts from the WB, were present.

South Asia UKP Launching Seminar

In this launching seminar, a panel discussion was carried out regarding three main topics. The topics were "Inclusive Urban Growth," "Urban Development and Climate Change," and "Urban Regeneration."

Prior to the discussion, representatives from each country had the opportunity to present the issues of the cities in their respective countries, and a discussion followed. The introduction for the UKP was presented by the World Bank, and then the KRIHS spoke about the role of the KRIHS and the GDPC, and gave a presentation on the process of Korea's national territorial planning and urban development. Through the individual meetings with the representatives of the respective countries, the delegates of the KRIHS discussed the ways Korea could contribute to the development of the South Asian countries, and then shared the experience and knowledge developed by the KRIHS that has led to the national territorial development of Korea.

The KRIHS delegation met with Abha Joshi Ghani, Sector Manager of the World Bank, and its other officials, to discuss cooperative measures, firmly establishing the two institute’s intentions to build a network for training and education, and to operate a webpage to share information between the two institutes, which are core partners of the UKB.

The KRIHS delegation met with Cho Sang-woo, the KOICA Office Director in Sri Lanka, and the World Bank officials. The director spoke about the activities KOICA’s office has been engaged in, and the current on-going projects that are being carried out by the KOICA.

Workshop with Sri Lanka’s Urban Development Authority (UDA)

In this workshop, the KRIHS delegates provided information about the KRIHS, and received information about the project that Sri Lanka’s Urban Development Authority (UDA) and the KOICA conducted together. The KRIHS delegates provided information about the educational training programs of the KRIHS and discussed the participation of the UDA in the programs.

The KRIHS held a presentation and panel discussion about the "OECD Urban Policy Review - Korea 2012," with the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs (MLTMA) at the auditorium of the KRIHS, on April 27, 2013. In conjunction with the publication of the “OECD Urban Policy Review - Korea 2012” which was requested from the OECD by the Korean government, this event was designed to share the main contents of the report, and discuss policy direction for the future of Korean cities. Two sessions were used to present the ‘‘OECD Urban Policy Review - Korea 2012" and the seminar "Strengthening of City Competitiveness and Invigoration of Green City." The main guests, Kwon Do-Yeop, Minister of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs, Angel Gurria, Secretary General of OECD, Huh Kyung-Wook, OECD Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to France, and Park Yang-Ho, President of the KRIHS, participated in this seminar and panel discussion. An in-depth discussion about the reason for the issuing of the OECD report, and the future direction of Korean urban policy was presented.

In the seminar, Angel Gurria, Secretary General of the OECD, gave a presentation about the ‘‘OECD Urban Policy Review - Korea 2012" and had a question-and-answer session for this topic. Then Joaquim Oliveira Martins, Manager of Regional Development Policy of the OECD, presented on the importance of a region-based development policy, based on the experience of the OECD countries.

Dr. Park Se-hoon, Research Fellow, explained the cultural cluster strategy as a method of urban regeneration by examining the case of Totatoga of Busan.
