Meeting with local consultants in Mumbai

The KRIHS delegates and Zhiyu Jerry Chen of the World Bank had a meeting with local consultants in Mumbai. The delegates introduced the ICT project and informed the local consultants of their basic roles. After the brief introduction, the delegates and the consultants had a question and answer session, exchanging information regarding the research area, roles of the consultants, workshops, recent trend of the Indian government, and future plans.

Meeting with related personnel of the city of Chittagong

The KRIHS delegates and the personnel of the World Bank had a meeting with related personnel of the city of Chittagong. First, the delegates explained why Chittagong was selected for the KRIHS’s project and explored ways for cooperation such as participation in the training program by the GDPC of the KRIHS. The city of Chittagong gave a briefing on Chittagong’s ICT status and discussed the education for young adults and middle-aged people, which is a prerequisite for successful implementation of the project.

Following the meeting with related personnel of Chittagong, the delegates had a meeting with the ICT personnel in Chittagong. After the introduction of the KRIHS’ project, the delegates had a chance to listen to the opinions of the ICT personnel. People from engineering and marketing companies advised on where to take caution in carrying out the project, followed by opinions from various institutions on the prerequisites for Chittagong to develop into an ICT hub. Related personnel from the World Bank and the city of Chittagong agreed to establish an action plan for the project through collaboration with the KRIHS.

In a meeting with the local consultants in Chittagong, the delegates of the KRIHS introduced the project. They discussed the roles and the expectations from the local consultants, cooperation plans among the stakeholders, and promotion plans in the future.

The UKP South Asia Regional Workshop on “Green Cities in South Asia Region” was held in the G20 Hall of the KRIHS from October 16 to 19, 2012 and the Daegu EXCO from October 17 to October 18. This workshop was co-hosted by the World Bank and the KRIHS and was a part of the 1st UKP Academy training program after the KRIHS was designated as an UKP Academy in September, 2012.

The UKP was established in order to respond to the issues related to the global growth of cities and to guide the urbanization of developing countries. Participants include world-leading institutions and universities such as MIT, McKinsey and Company, and Cisco. The KRIHS, as a core partner of the UKP, has been selected as an UKP Academy and has played a pivotal role. 50 participants both from Korea and overseas attended this event including 25 people from the World Bank, including Abha Joshi-Ghani, Director of the World Bank Institute, and Ming Zhang, the Manager of South Asia Region of the World Bank, and 12 high-ranking officials, including Kinlay Dorjee, Mayor of Thimphu City, Bhutan, and Rohan Senevirathne, Assistant Vice-Minister of Sri Lanka. Park Yang-ho, President of the KRIHS, and other officials from the KRIHS, and experts from the EDCF, KOICA, and the Presidential Committee on Green Growth attended the event and actively discussed topics related to Green City.

The workshop consisted of three to four presentations on specific topics (15 minutes each) and a 50-minute group discussion.

Topic presentation

After the presentations, a group discussion was held with a panel of Ming Zhang (Manager of South Asia Region of the World Bank), Raghu Kesavan (Senior Infrastructure Expert of the World Bank), Zahed Khan (Senior Urban Expert of the World Bank), and Choi Sung-soo (Visiting Professor at the KDI School). The participants actively engaged in the discussion on how Green City policies and cases are interpreted and applied in different cultures and circumstances.

•Fieldtripsandinstitutionalvisits

On October 15 and 19, which was prior to and after the workshop, respectively, the participants visited Gyeongbokgung Palace and Insa-dong, experiencing the preservation of traditional culture with modernization. The participants then visited the Transport Operation and Information Service (TOPIS) of Seoul and were introduced to the advanced transport system of Korea that utilizes computers and electronic facilities. On October 19, the participants visited the Bangcheon-ri Landfill in Daegu, seeing how the landfill is being operated in an environment-friendly manner by minimizing pollution. They then visited the Daegu Arboretum which had previously been a landfill, experiencing the efforts of Daegu in the building of a Green City. On their way to Daegu, the participants visited the Sejong Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency and witnessed the plans, development methods, and progress of new cities and learned various policies, technologies, and planning methodologies. On their way back to Seoul, the participants from developing countries rode the Korean Train Express (KTX), experiencing the infrastructures of Korea based on advanced technologies.
