We fabricate porphyrin:Zn-doped nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cells and measure the diffraction efficiencies for orientational photorefractive (OPR) holograms by means of a two-beam coupling experiment under the influence of an external electric field. We showed that the OPR holograms recorded in the NLC cell were reversibly rewritable just by switching ON and OFF the external electric field and/or turning ON and OFF the writing beam(s). Based on the material equations and the torque balance equation of the director axis of the NLC, we derived the real-time diffraction efficiency for the OPR holograms, and this with a comparison with the experimental data for various electric fields and laser beam intensities showed good agreement.
