Before the trip

I searched the Internet to collect as much information as possible to get to know about the country. I realized it had become very modernized. I also found out that the meanings of colors and numbers are important in Chinese culture. I practiced greetings in Chinese, hoping that I'd be able to communicate with local people when I first got to China.

여름방학 동안에, 교환학생으로 나는 중국의 베이징에 있 는 우리학교의 자매학교를 방문했다.

여행 전

As soon as I arrived in Beijing, I met my host family. The family had a mother, father, and daughter. Wei, the daughter, was also my classmate. Wei's family welcomed me with big smiles. Practicing Chinese before the trip paid off. A couple of my greetings in Chinese worked! In Wei's room there were a lot of pictures of various Korean singers hung all over the walls. She told me that many of her friends were interested in Korean pop culture. On the one hand, I was so proud of Korean culture, but on the other hand, I felt bad that I did not know much about Chinese culture. Wei's parents cooked a delicious meal. Wei's family ate with long chopsticks and rarely used spoons while eating rice.

나의 중국 민박 가족 만나기

베이징에 도착하자마자, 나는 나의 민박 가족을 만났다.

가족구성원은 엄마, 아빠, 그리고 딸이다. 딸, Wei는 또 한 나의 학급친구이다. Wei의 가족은 환하게 미소 지으 며 나를 환영해주었다. 여행 전에 중국어를 연습한 것이 성공적이었다. 나의 몇 마디 중국어 인사가 효과가 있었 다! Wei의 방에는 벽에 온통 걸려있는 다양한 한국 가수 들의 많은 사진들이 있었다. 그녀는 그녀의 친구들 중 많 은 수가 한국 대중 문화에 관심이 있다고 말했다. 한편으 로는 나는 한국문화가 정말 자랑스러웠지만, 다른 한편으 로는 중국문화에 대해 많이 알지 못하는 것이 마음에 걸 렸다. Wei의 부모님은 맛있는 식사를 요리하셨다. Wei 의 가족은 긴 젓가락으로 식사를 했고 밥을 먹는 동안 숟 가락을 거의 사용하지 않았다.

considered a negative color. For them, white is associated with death. A classmate of mine used red, which symbolizes good fortune and joy in China. I realized that colors have different meanings in China and Korea.

On the street

After school, Wei's family took me to a restaurant nearby. According to Wei, it is very common in China to eat out. Though the smell of the spices in the restaurant was unusual to me, I quite enjoyed the food. The amount was huge. The table was very big and round, and spun around at the center, which made it easy to share the dishes. I was told that customers must take any leftover food with them.

자매학교에서

수업시간에, 우리는 중국 연극을 위한 전통 중국 가면을 만들어야만 했다. 나는 흰색이 한국 사람들의 순수하고 순결한 정신을 표현하기 때문에 흰색 가면을 만들었다.

하지만 중국 사람들에게, 흰색은 부정적인 색으로 여겨질 수 있다. 그들에게, 흰색은 죽음과 관련이 있다. 나의 학 급친구는 빨간색을 사용했는데, 그것은 중국에서 행운과 기쁨을 상징한다. 나는 색깔이 중국과 한국에서 다른 의 미를 가진다는 것을 알게 되었다.

거리에서

street. Most of the signs on the stores were red. Food stands sold very interesting food such as fried bugs. I took a bite of a bug, and surprisingly the taste was pretty good. I also bought a bottle of cola. It was 888ml, which was quite a strange quantity to me.

The number 8 has long been regarded as the luckiest number in Chinese culture because the sound of it is linked to the meaning of making a fortune.

Leaving China

In China, I was able to learn a lot about Chinese culture and history. I was impressed when I visited the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace, and the Forbidden City. Of all the things I did, however, the homestay gave me the best chance to experience real Chinese culture. I will never forget memories from my stay in China.

When Phileas Fogg appeared in the large drawing room, the clock struck 8:45. He had just completed his long journey. This meant he had won his bet with his colleagues that he could travel around the world in 80 days.

But there was some confusion. He thought he had arrived in London on Saturday, December 21, but actually, it was Friday, December 20, only 79 days after his initial departure. Being an extremely precise and careful person, how had he mixed up what day it was? There is a simple reason for his confusion. Fogg unknowingly had gained a day on his journey―simply because he had gone round the world eastwards. He would, on the contrary, have lost this day if he had gone in the opposite direction, westwards.
