In an effort to examine the background of the birth of Korean botanical gardens and their significance, this article examines the botanical gardens that existed before the establishment of Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden. The horticultural culture that developed with the rise of natural history that prevailed at the end of the Joseon Dynasty in the late eighteenth century is analyzed in Chapter 3. Thus, we can say that towards the end of the Joseon Dynasty, the functions of the botanical gar- lair, such as flower gathering and research, were carried out in gardens owned by enthusiasts.

Chapter 4 deals with the concept and development of botanical gardens in the early modern century towards the end of the 19th century in the light of the institutionalization of natural science education. Thus, we can say that the idea of botanical gardens in the modern sense was presented and discussed at least in the second half of the nineteenth century. As a result, it can be said that the development of Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden is less related to the development of botany.

Circumstances that led to the development of Jong-yakjeon, gardens owned by aficionados, discussions about botanical gardens in the early modern period, key agents who led the construction of Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden, and the birth of the garden itself were not the same.

The Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden, which was established by the Japanese government in 1909, is a unique example that provides an insight into the birth and background of the construction of botanical gardens in Korea.7 The following statement is taken from. Secondly, is it correct to say that Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden is the base of about 70 botanical gardens in Korea. Thus, the purpose of this article is to provide a critical and historical analysis of the origins of botanical gardens.

  • The Jong-yakjeon in the Joseon Dynasty
  • Conclusion: Benevolent King’s Medicianl Herb Garden

22 Lee points to hyangyak as the main subject of medical history in the Goryeo dynasty. Therefore, vegetable gardens of the intellectuals of the late Goryeo dynasty indicate the birth of physical gardens in the Joseon dynasty. Two Ways of Hyangyak Development in the Era of King Sejong in the Choson Dynasty."

Consequently, we found evidence of the collection, management, research and education of medicinal plants in the medical system of the Three States era. Policies regarding hyangyak had been actively implemented since the early years of the Joseon Dynasty. The management of the Jong-yakjeon medical facility was also a part of the medical change movement.

Furthermore, there is still a lack of evidence that allows for a comprehensive picture of Jong-yukjeon.

In the late Joseon Dynasty, the word byeok was a key term related to natural history. The following article attempts to explore the ways in which naturalistic tendencies were reflected in the garden culture of the time by examining Ryu Bak's Baekhwaam. However, Ryu Bak seemed to have corresponded with several notable literary workers of the time.

They were called "Namin" (people of the south) because most of the members lived in the southern area of Seoul, Mt. We could gather from the gardens of the late Joseon dynasty that they were the work of devotees rather than recluses, and Ryu Bak was a devotee with an obsession who lived absorbed in his garden in the countryside. At the end of the eighteenth century, some of the study of herbal medicine went beyond the boundaries of the field of medicine into that of natural history.

Ultimately, through learning, we can gain a deeper insight into the origins of botanical gardens in the late Joseon Dynasty.

Visits to Botanical Gardens

  • The Civilization and Enlightenment Movement and the Expansion of Knowledge
  • Visits to Botanical Gardens in the World
  • Conclusion: Western Gardens and Models of Civilization

4 The new book refers to the books that introduced Western geography, history and politics to the young intellectuals of the Qing Dynasty. 15 On the concept and origin of the term gaehwa, see Lee Kwang-rin, Hanguk gaehwasa yeongu, 25-29. 21 On the split of the Gaehwa Party, see NIKH, ed., History of Korea, New Edition, vol.

There were two types of visits and journeys during the Enlightenment period, depending on the purpose of the activities: In 1883, with the signing of the Treaty between the United States and Korea, Bobingsa was sent to the United States to realize Enlightenment through adoption of advanced US. He helped lead the bobingsa to the United States at the request of the American ambassador to Japan.

See Pyun, "The Visit of the Korean Mission to Boston in 1883 and the Beginning of Scientific and Technological Interactions between Korea and the United States," 10.

This suggests that the delegation may have visited the Boston Public Garden, the first public botanical garden in the United States, which was located within 1 km of the hotel where the delegation was staying. First, in the descriptions of each city, Yu introduced the botanical garden as an important factor that determined the character of the city. 122 A description of the Boston Public Garden, the first public botanical garden in the United States, in Ibid., 527. The concept of botanical gardens drawn by new intellectuals of the Enlightenment would later have an influence on the construction of botanical gardens.

Therefore, when studying the context of the founding of Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden, it is necessary to examine visits to botanical gardens in the West and discussions about botanical gardens during the Enlightenment period.

The Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden

Fukuwa, one of the experts at the Imperial Botanical Garden of the Japanese Imperial Household. The 1:2,000-scale Changgyeongwon field survey and schematic design map was completed in April 1908. The area of the Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden accounted for the total area, according to the text in the lower right corner of the project.

The names of the buildings to be built were also written in red. In the early years of Japan's colonial period, botanical and natural history research was led by Japanese explorers. He then actively engaged in botanical research work as the Joseon Botanical Commissioner under the General Government of Japan.

As a member of the Korean Research Society for Natural History, he also participated in the writing of Joseon sikmul hyangmyungjip. 27 For a general overview of the Plants Society of Kyungsung College of Pharmacy, see Toh Chung-ae, To Pong-sub (Seoul: Jayeonmunhwasa). Considering that the specimens he examined were stored at the Experimental Forestry Station and a laboratory at the University of Tokyo, it is confirmed that he was not associated with the Changgyeongwon Botanical Garden.31.
