PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA GENEVA
The 22thSession of UPR Working Group <Check against delivery>
Review of Libya Geneva, 13 May, 2015
Statement of the Republic of Korea
Thank you, Mr. President. The Republic of Korea warmly welcomes the delegation of the Government of Libya.
My delegation acknowledges that the Government of Libya has made efforts in the promotion and protection of human rights in the face of profound social and political changes. In particular, we welcome the issuance of a standing invitation to the mandate holders of all special procedures, as the Republic of Korea previously recommended in the first UPR.
Nonetheless, recognizing the complexity of the current situation, we cannot help but share the common concern of the international community over the serious human rights violations including attacks or threats against human rights defenders, media professionals, judicial officers, as well as wide-spread arbitrary detentions, tortures, and abductions.
Against this backdrop, my delegation would like to make the following two recommendations.
First, we recommend that the government of Libya continue moving towards establishing a comprehensive Unity Government through the Libyan Political Dialogue currently led by the United Nations.
Second, we recommend that the government of Libya build on current efforts to improve the overall human rights environment in the country through restoring stable governance and the rule of law.
Thank you, Mr. President. /End/
