PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA GENEVA
The 26th Session of the Human Rights Council <Check against delivery>
Agenda 10(General Debate) June 25, 2014 Geneva
Statement by the Republic of Korea
Mr. President,
My delegation shares the concerns of the international community regarding the massive and systematic human rights violations and violations of international humanitarian law committed by all parties to the conflict in South Sudan. We are very concerned with the finding of the UNMISS report that some of the human rights violations may amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity.
In this regard, we would like to commit our support to the work of the African Union Commission of Inquiry to examine accountability for human rights violations. Along with the regional efforts, the international community should also work to end the enormous suffering of the people of South Sudan. My delegation believes this Council should play a role in this regard.
Currently, there has been a positive development towards resolving the crisis through the mediation work of the IGAD. We welcome the Agreement to Resolve the Crisis in South Sudan signed on 9 May and would like to call all parties to the conflict to be faithfully committed to the agreement. Importantly, the international community must also be vigilant for the ceasefire agreement to be abided by.
The Republic of Korea has been actively engaged in the national and international efforts for the reconstruction of newly born South Sudan. Along this line, the Republic of Korea will continue to do its part within the scope of international humanitarian efforts for addressing the dire situation of South Sudan. We will also render its support to all regional and international efforts so that the young country can secure political stabilization and continue forward.
