A backpropagation neural network was applied to ultrasonic testing to evaluate crack location, size and orientation around the keyway of a turbine rotor disk. The RF signals received from reflectors had a number of peaks, but they were processed to have just one maximum peak for each reflector. B-scan images were obtained using the processed signals. The time differences and the scanning positions were used as input features for the neural network. The time differences between the echo peaks of the keyway and the crack were extracted from the B-scan images. The scanning positions as a function of the amplitude were extracted from the amplitude distribution curve at the time of maximum echo peak for each reflector. Applying these features to neural network, we found that we were able to evaluate the location, the size and the orientation of cracks initiating from the keyway.
