Answers

1) Jaden’s family is in Florence, Italy.

2) They are visiting Ms. Gambini, his mother’s friend.

3) Today his parents are going to museums, 4) but Jaden wants to stay behind.

5) the translation app on his phone will help him communicate.

6) His stomach growls, 7) so he enters the kitchen.

8) When Ms. Gambini sees Jaden, she says,

9) “Buon giorno. Vuoi un pezzo di pane e un bicchiere di latte?”

10) Jaden does not know how to respond.

11) Then the app says, “Good morning.

12) Would you like a piece of bread and a glass of milk?”

13) Jaden answers, “Yes, please.”

14) There is a knock on the door,

15) and a woman whom Ms. Gambini invited walks in.

16) The two women begin speaking Italian very fast.

17) So the translator does not understand.

18) Jaden turns off the phone and leaves it on the table.

19) He goes out to enjoy the sunny morning.

20) He follows a thumping sound

21) and finds a girl who is kicking a soccer ball against a wall.

22) She turns to him and says, “Buon giorno.”

23) His phone is in the kitchen,

24) so Jaden does not know what to say.

25) He just repeats the words that the girl said, “Buon giorno.”

26) The girl kicks the ball to him.

27) Jaden needs no translator for that.

28) For a while, the two play with the ball.

29) Finally, the girl points at herself and says, “Mi chiamo Rosabella.”

30) “My name is Jaden,” he responds.

31) Suddenly Rosabella says, “Arriva l’autobus.”

32) Jaden understands the words that sound like bus and arrive.

33) Sure enough, a bus appears.

34) Kids in soccer uniforms shout from the windows,

“Ciao, Rosabella!”

35) As Rosabella steps onto the bus, 36) Jaden says, “Good luck.”

37) She does not understand.

38) So Jaden thinks and says, “Buon, buon ....”

39) He points to the soccer ball 40) that she is holding in her hand.

41) Rosabella shouts, “Fortuna! Buona fortuna!”

42) Fortuna sounds like fortune.

43) “Buona fortuna!” he shouts.

44) Rosabella and her friends shout back, “Molte grazie!”

45) The bus rolls away.

46) Jaden goes back to the kitchen.

47) He says into the translation app, 48) “Learning from people is more fun.

49) Can you teach me some Italian, Ms. Gambini?”

50) Ms. Gambini says, “Sì,” and laughs.
