Freud 의 선배의사인 Joseph Breuer 가 어느 날 그에게

한 여자 환자 이야기를 들려주었다 . 환자는 비엔나 상류

가정 출신으로 21 세였다 . 예쁘고 지적이며 똑똑한 처

녀였다 . 아버지가 늑막염으로 사경을 헤매실 때 헌신적

으로 간호하다 병을 얻었다 . 기질적 원인을 찾을 수 없는

심인성이었다 . 예컨대 그녀는 공수증으로 육 주 간 물을

못 마시고 과일로 수분을 공급받을 수 밖에 없었다 . 그런

데 하루는 그녀가 최면하에서 한 가지 기억을 털어 놓았

다 . 어릴 때 그녀의 집에는 불친절하고 기분 나쁜 하녀가

있었는데 , 어느 날 그 하녀의 방에서 그녀가 기르는 개가

방바닥에 놓인 유리잔의 물을 핥아 먹고 있는 것을 보았

다 . 구역질이 나도록 혐오감을 느꼈었다 . 그러나 하녀

가 무서워서 말을 못했던 기억이었다 . 그런데 지금까지

잊고 있었던 기억을 말하고 나자 그녀는 놀랍게도 갈증을

느꼈고 , 물을 마실 수 있게 되었다 . 공수증의 치료가 되

었던 것이다 .

또한 그녀는 오른팔이 마비되었고 , 영어로 밖에는 말을 할

수 없는 현상도 있었다 . 비엔나는 독일어를 사용하는 도시

인데 어느날 부터인지 그녀는 모국어를 사용할 수 없었다 .

이들 증상 뒤에도 숨겨진 기억이 있었다 . 즉 , 어느 날 밤

아버지가 고열로 신음하시게 되었다 . 그녀는 의사의 왕진

을 청하고 기다리는 사이 잠시 졸았다 . 비몽사몽간에 벽에

서 검정색 뱀 한 마리가 기어내려와 아버지 침대로 다가가

아버지를 물려고 하는 것을 보았다 . 급히 뱀을 쫓으려 했

으나 팔이 말을 듣지 않았다 . 놀라서 자기 손을 보니 손가

락들이 뱀으로 변해 있었고 , 손톱은 죽은 사람의 얼굴로

보였다 . 무서워서 기도를 하려고 했는데 기도가 목에서 나

오지를 않는다 . 그 때 불현듯 어려서 영어로 배운 주기도

문이 생각나서 영어로 기도를 드렸는데 그 뒤부터 오른팔이

마비되고 영어로만 말 할 수 있게 되었다 . 이러한 잊혀졌

던 기억을 말하고나자 증상이 씻은 듯 사라졌다 . 그래서

그녀는 이 치료를 ‘말로 하는 치료 (talk cure)’ 라고 불렀

다 . Breuer 는 이 치료를 카타르시스 법이라고 불렀다 .

Bertha von Pappenheim

Social Worker and Women's Rights Activist: 1859-1936

Pseudonym: Paul Berthold

Bertha von Pappenheim was born as the daughter of a wealthy, Jewish family in 1

859. Her education was completed with 16 and she complied with her typical resp

onsibilities as a "higher daughter:" she prepared herself for the role of a wife. How

ever, after her father became very ill, she cared for him and became sick herself. H

er doctor diagnosed her with "hysteria" and told his colleague Sigmund Freud abo

ut it. This was the beginning of Freud's study of hysteria, entitled "Anna O."

Politically-active as a Jewish woman in Neu-Isenburg, Bertha von Pappenheim fou

nded the "Jewish Women's Association" in 1904, and a home for orphans, girls at

risk, and unmarried mothers and their children in 1907. The suffragette also foug

ht against the international trade of girls and initiated girls' clubs and help at train

stations. She also translated Mary Wollstonecrafts' "A Vindication of the Rights of

Women" into German. Innitially, von Pappenheim published her fairy-tales and her

novels under the pseudonym Paul Berthold.

Von Pappenheim ignored the political changes in Germany and persisted on th

e "geistigen Raum," which guaranteed inner freedom. Shortly before her death, s

he was interrogated due to a derogatory comment against Hittler by one of the ch

ildren in her home. After her death, two houses of the orphanage were destroyed

during the "Reichskristallnacht," and in 1942, the remaining girls and female care

takers were moved to a concentration camp.
