W: Hi, I'm looking for a cell phone accessory. I saw a nice one here last week.

M: Was it this one with a pig? It's very popular.

W: Well, I saw a heart-shaped one.

M: You mean this one with a rose in the center?

W: Right! Oh, it costs more than I thought.

M: What about this cat ornament? It's very cute and the price is very reasonable.

W: Isn't it too ordinary? I want something unique and distinctive.

M: Then, how about this one with a mirror? They come in square and round shapes. You can also put a picture in it.

W: Perfect! I like the square one. How much is it?

M: It's 6,000 won but we can give you a 10% discount if you have our membership card.

W: Sounds great! Here it is.

(2)

M: How are you Mrs. Baker? Can I help you with anything?

W: Hi, Kevin. My husband and I have planned a camping trip for this weekend. But we realized that some parts of our tent are missing.

M: You should go to the camping equipment section. It's on the third floor.

Right next to the golf equipment.

W: I went there already. But I couldn't find the brand of our tent.

M: Did you buy the tent here?

W: Yes. I bought it about 3 years ago.

M: It's possible that we no longer carry that brand. Maybe the manager can help you.

W: Thanks. I hope I can get the missing parts in time so that my boys won't be disappointed.

M: I hope so, too. Here, let me take you to the manager.

M: Hi, Mrs. Robinson. I need your advice in finding a new place to live.

W: Anything wrong with living in the dormitory?

M: Not really. I just want to experience an independent life.

W: Oh, really? Hmm. You need to consider how long you are going to rent a room and how much money you can afford.

M: Well, I expect to rent it for at least 1 year. And I'm willing to spend 30% of my monthly budget, but less than 300 dollars.

W: Good! Then you need to decide on a furnished room or an unfurnished one.

M: I definitely want a furnished room. I don't have the time to shop for furniture.

W: Now here's the last thing you need to think about. It should be close to our campus, so you won't be late to my classes.

M: Wow, you think of everything. Thank you. Now, I won't have to go see a real estate agent.

(3)

M: What's going on? You don't seem to be yourself.

W: Well, things aren't great at the moment. It's hard to make friends in this city and find a suitable job.

M: Why can't you make friends? It's a huge city.

W: I know but everyone seems to stay within their own group of people.

M: And what's the problem with the job hunt?

W: I don't have much experience and companies prefer people with experience.

M: Don't be so down on yourself. You are a sociable and capable person.

W: I'm glad I have a friend like you.

M: The more you believe in yourself, the more likely you can make friends and get a good job.

W: Thanks for your considerate words.

M: I'm starving. How about ordering some food? I heard that the new restaurant around the corner is really good.

W: I already ate. But I'm willing to try their food. Here is the ad with their menu.

M: I want to have spaghetti. Does it come with any sides?

W: You have a choice of soup or salad.

M: The salad sounds good.

W: I'll order a slice of pizza. But they have a $15 minimum for delivery orders. We're $1 short.

M: What can we get for a dollar?

W: There's nothing on the menu for a dollar.

M: How about an iced tea?

W: It's $3.

M: That's OK. Would you place the order? I need to finish this report.

W: Sure.

(4)

[Telephone rings]

W: Hello, Deborah Adamson at Star Newspaper Advertisement.

M: Hello, Deborah. This is Greg Lee at Joy Mart. I need to talk to you about our ad that ran in your newspaper this morning.

W: Sure, Greg. Is there a problem?

M: Yes. Instead of the picture of our model, there was a picture of a pig!

W: That's terrible. I sincerely apologize for the error.

M: I don't think you understand the seriousness of the problem. Our store became a joke around town.

W: I can't tell you how sorry we are. We will certainly run a corrected version along with our apology. Is there anything else we can do?

M: Yes, there is. I'd like the person responsible for this fired.

W: Don't worry. We take matters like this very seriously. We'll find out who is responsible and make him or her pay for it.

M: Good. That's what I wanted to hear.

M: What brings you in, Sumi?

W: I feel tired and weak.

M: Let me check your medical chart. Everything seems to be normal. Have you experienced any drastic changes recently?

W: I don't seem to have any appetite and I've lost a lot of weight.

M: Is there any reason why?

W: I came from Korea about 6 months ago. I miss my family and friends very much. I dream about them every night.

M: How often do you call your family and friends?

W: Just once in a while.

M: Hmm, you must be homesick. Take some vitamins, eat nutritious food and exercise regularly. You'll feel energized in a few days.

W: Thank you, Dr. Brown.

(5)

W: Honey, what happened?

M: I bumped into a boy while I was playing baseball at school.

W: Is that how you got those bruises on your forehead?

M: Yeah, but the school nurse treated me very well. She put a pack of ice on it.

W: That was nice of her. Is everything OK besides your forehead?

M: My left shoulder hurts a little.

W: Oh, no. We'd better go to the hospital and get it checked out.

M: But before that, I need to get a new pair of glasses. Mine are broken.

W: Yeah, you need a new pair. By the way, how is the other boy doing?

M: We crashed into each other really hard and he passed out. He was taken to the hospital.

W: That's terrible. I hope he doesn't have any major injuries.

M: Sally, do you have any plans for this evening?

W: Nothing special. Why?

M: There's a jazz concert at the Cultural Center at 7:30. Can you join me?

W: Sure, I'd love to. What time shall we leave?

M: Would six o'clock be all right?

W: Six o'clock? It takes only 20 minutes to get there.

M: But I have to stop by the Browns and pick up Tom.

W: Well, where do they live?

M: They live on Pine Street. It takes 25 minutes to get to their house.

W: Only 25 minutes?

M: Yes, and from there we have to drive another half an hour to the concert.

(6)

W: I am a freelance writer and I write for newspapers and magazines. I didn't have any work for a long time. There were times when I had to borrow money from my parents to pay the rent. But all of this changed one day, when I was asked to write a column for a local newspaper. I did the job well, which led to another job with a fashion magazine. Luckily, calls from newspapers and magazines kept coming in and I was writing 3 articles at once. Even though I had enough work, I didn't reject another offer to do a really big job. But I wish I had because now I don't have time to eat or sleep.

① W: What shall I do when I fall on the slope?

M: Here let me show you. You need to take off your skies like this.

② W: Hey, you should wear a helmet while in-line skating.

M: OK. It's better to be safe than sorry. Thanks.

③ W: Wow, you are such a good skater! When did you learn to in-line skate?

M: I've been in-line skating since I was 7.

④ W: Are you OK? I told you to be careful.

M: I was being careful, but I'm only a beginner.

⑤ W: I love your in-line skates. Where did you get them?

M: I won them at the in-line skating competition.

M: This is a type of website usually maintained by an individual with regular posts of commentaries, descriptions of events, or other materials such as photos and videos. Some of these provide a commentary or news on a particular subject, while others function as more personal online diaries. A typical form of this combines text, images, and links to other web pages or other media related to its topic. One of the important features is that it's possible for the readers to leave comments, so people can share their ideas

(7)

W: How was your trip?

M: It was great. I had a wonderful time at Niagara Falls with my family.

W: I envy you. When did you come back?

M: I came back two weeks ago.

W: Then why didn't you show up for the seminar last week?

M: Oh, I had a fever right after the trip. I was worried that it may be the new flu going around.

W: So you went to the hospital?

M: Yes. They told me that they were not sure until the results came out.

So I had to stay in my room for two days.

W: Wow. And they were negative.

M: I just had a bad cold because of the strong air conditioning while traveling. But you know what the funny thing is?

W: What?

M: My family wouldn't even come in to my room and see my face for two days.

M: How will you get to the university for your interview this afternoon?

W: I'm considering either the bus or the train.

M: But you have motion sickness.

W: That's why I didn't consider using the bus at first. But the university is very close to the bus terminal.

M: Hmm. How about the train? The train station is not too far from it, either.

W: Yeah. But both the bus and the train take more than 3 hours and I still need some time to finish my self-introduction.

M: Then why don't you fly?

W: For time's sake, an airplane is an alternative. But the airport is too far from the school. It will take more than one hour by subway to get there.

M: Oh, I have a great idea. Why don't you finish the self-introduction on your laptop computer on the way there?

W: But I also have to use the Internet.

M: Now you can use the wireless Internet on the train for only 2,000 won for the whole day.

(8)

M: Can I help you?

W: I'd like to check in, please.

M: Do you have a reservation?

W: I called about a month ago, but someone said I didn't need to make a reservation.

M: That's usually true during this time of the year. However, because of the conference held near here, I think we're having more guests than usual.

W: Do you have any vacancies?

M: Just a moment, ma'am. How long will you be staying?

W: Three days.

M: Are you alone?

W: No. My husband is bringing our two daughters.

M: I'm sorry, but all we have at this moment is a room for 2. Would you like to stay anyway?

W: Well, it's better than spending the night in our car. So, yes.

W: Have you thought much about the project?

M: You mean the one on causes for decreasing birth rates?

W: Yes, that one. We'd better get started on it. It's due tomorrow.

M: Doing research projects is so frustrating.

W: We don't have time to complain. I think we can do it if we put our mind to it.

M: But we have a long way to go. We need to make presentation files as well.

W: You're good with computers. So, why don't you make the presentation files?

M: And you'll do the research?

(9)

M: What took you so long? We've been waiting for hours.

W: I got stuck in traffic. Construction on the highway has led to traffic congestion.

M: Meeting at six doesn't mean leaving the house at 5 to six.

W: I left early. But the traffic was horrible.

M: It's rush hour. You should have expected it.

W: It was the worst traffic I had ever seen.

M: You can't keep giving the same old excuse. It's like the tenth time you've used that excuse.

W: Well, what can I say? I'm sorry.

M: I don't like your attitude, and I don't appreciate your tone of voice.

W: How about you? Aren't you ever late?

M: Well, at least I'm not late as often as you. You have no respect for others.

W: I guess you're right.

W: You look depressed. What's the matter?

M: I had a talk with my teacher about my grades today.

W: And your grades are not as good as you'd expected?

M: You know, I stayed up late many nights studying for the mid-term exam but I blew it.

W: Cheer up, Bill. It's not the end of the world.

M: My mom will kill me if she finds out my grades.

W: Don't be ridiculous. Just tell her that you did your best and you'll try even harder next time.

M: But you don't know my mom. She has high expectations of me.

W: My mom is the same. So I talk to her all the time and now she understands me better.

M:

(10)

W: What are you doing, Dad? You're so involved in something and didn't even notice me.

M: Oh, sorry. I'm searching for jazz dance classes on the Internet.

W: What? You want to learn jazz dance?

M: Yes, I want to start a new hobby to use my time more wisely.

W: What made you decide to do that?

M: I just read a book on people who lived their lives to the fullest.

W: So, you want to enrich your life?

M: You're right on the nose, sweety. (click, click) Bingo! There's an evening class at the Cultural Center.

W: Don't you think you're a little old to try that?

M:

M: Mr. Oh had a discussion in his class on how to save energy and help stop global warming. His students came up with many ideas and made a commitment to save water, recycle, and turn off the air-conditioner and the lights when unnecessary. One day while Mr. Oh was walking down the hall, he suddenly felt some cold air. He traced to the source of the cold air and he found that his students left the air-conditioner on while they were out for P.E. class. In this case, what would Mr. Oh probably say to his students?
