13) Like humans, they live almost everywhere in the world, 14) except a few extremely cold places including

17) According to scientists,

18) there are about one million ants 19) for every human in the world.

20) Though each ant hardly weighs anything, 21) one million ants are as heavy

22) as a human being weighing about 62 kilograms.

23) What Is the Ant Society Like?

24) Ants live in colonies which have lots of residents living together.

25) Within a colony, there are usually three different types of ants.

26) There is the queen,

27) and what she does her entire life is lay eggs.

28) The second type of ant is the male 29) that helps the queen produce these eggs.

30) The third type of ant is the worker.

31) Worker ants are all female and do very important jobs, 32) like caring for eggs, defending the colony, and

collecting food.

33) How Do Ants Communicate?

34) Though ants do not speak like humans, 35) they actually have a “language.”

36) Ants produce a chemical called a pheromone 37) to communicate with one another.

38) By using the chemical,

39) they can exchange information about food or danger.

40) Ants also use touch for communication.

41) For example, if an ant finds food, 42) it passes on the good news 43) by rubbing its body on its neighbor.

44) Since an ant has legs covered with very sensitive hairs, 45) it can sense even the smallest touch.

47) Some queen ants live up to 30 years.
