요즘은 차량에 블랙박스를 설치한 운전자를 흔하게 볼 수 있다. 이 장치는 차량의 앞과 뒤 영상 녹화뿐 만 아니라 음성까지도 녹음한다.
심지어 차가 주차되어 있을 때도 영상을 녹화하게 설정할 수 있다. 필요하면 메모리 카드에 저장된 영 상을 다운로드 해서 볼 수도 있다. 운전자들은 영상 을 통해 차에 정확히 무슨 일이 일어났는지 직접 볼 수 있다.
사고가 난 경우에는, 누구에게 과실이 있는지를 알 아내는 데 이 영상이 큰 도움이 된다. 더불어, 블랙 박스는 도로상의 여러 가지 사건 사고 해결에 귀중 한 자료로 사용되게 된다.
뉴스에도 흔히 이러한 영상이 자료 화면으로 나오 는 것을 볼 수 있다. 전적으로 블랙박스 화면 영상 자료로 만들어진 TV 프로그램이 나올 정도이다. 블 랙박스는 필수적인 차량 장비가 되었다.

A: That's a relief! Still, you must be angry. Did you find out who did it?
B: I caught him using the dash cam. He will have to pay for the repairs.
A: 저런! 차가 왜 이렇게 된 거야? 사고라도 났어?
B: 주차되어 있는 것을 누가 박았어. 걱정하지 마, 다치지는 않았으니까.
A: 그것 참 다행이네. 그래도 화 나겠다. 누가 그랬는지 알아 냈어?
B: 블랙박스를 써서 잡았지. 그 사람이 수리비를 내야 할 거야.
dash cam 차량용 블랙박스
차량용 블랙박스는 이제는 거의 필수품이 되었지만 막상 black box라는 표현 자체를 영어권에서는 우 리와 다소 다르게 사용한다. 보통은 차량의 속도나 위치, 사고 관련 정보를 눈에 띄지 않게 기록하는 장치를 black box라고 지칭하며, 우리가 보통 흔 히 생각하는 주행 영상 녹화 장치는 dashboard camera를 줄인 dash cam이라는 표현으로 부르 는 경우가 대부분이다.
예) I received a car insurance discount by installing a dash cam.
나는 블랙박스를 설치해서 차량 보험 할인을 받았다.
Unfortunately, the dash cam was turned off during the accident.
안타깝게도 사고 당시에 블랙박스 전원이 꺼져 있었다.
