Regional research topics include various regional economic development policies and strategies such as regional analysis, metropolitan management and control, and industrial location. To support these policy-oriented research activities, basic studies regarding the development of new analytical tools for regional analysis and other related research topics such as regional planning and industry development strategies are carried out as well.

In particular, considering the intensifying trend of localization and regional competition, cooperative systems among local governments, local research institutions and experts are emphasized. This is to vitalize the regional economy and strengthen competitiveness in the region.

In terms of urban planning, numerous researches are conducted such as creating the pleasant environ-ment for urban life, case studies for planned urban spatial structure, improving and developing planning process and urban infrastructure, urban district management, landscape planning and historic preserva-tion. Fundamental researches that are supportive of the above research topics, such as the develop-ment of analytical tools and new theories for urban planning and managedevelop-ment, are also carried out.
