In the early days, these were made by nature, simply as fallen logs across a stream. The first ones made by humans were probably wooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simple support and crossbeam arrangement. Most of these early ones could not support heavy weights or endure strong currents. These weaknesses led to the development of better ones. Now some of them are designed for trains, pedestrians or waterways for transport. These are sometimes used for unplanned purposes as well. The areas underneath them have become temporary shelters to homeless people, and the undersides of them are spots for graffiti.

The need for precision is various across cultures. An American exchange professor is feeling frustrated and annoyed.

Whenever he asks a Kenyan for directions, he is given information along the lines of “Go a little way to the left” or

“It’s just down the road, past the police station.” Unfortunately, his idea of “a little way” or “just down the road” seems to differ considerably (by several miles!) from the Kenyan idea.

Because members of different cultures have disparate worldviews, they will have diverse concepts of . In the United States, landmarks are often indicated by their position along mile markers. In other cultures, it is enough to know that it will be where the speaker tells you it will be;

When consumers are in a store to buy a product, they may feel pressured to purchase immediately. The sales staff may exert pressure, or consumers may create their own pressure. After all, the trip has cost time and effort, and the buyers don’t want to appear indecisive. For important purchases, it is wise to invest a bit more time before making a final decision. Consumers should spend more time initially rather than be unsatisfied with what they buy and return later to wait in the Customer Service line. It is also advisable for consumers to go home and evaluate and weigh the purchase decision. At home consumers are free of external pressure exerted by the sales environment and the sales staff.

With globalization, the dramatic expansion of cross-border trade and investment, there has been an increased mobility of international labor. In some European countries, migrant workers are providing industrialized nations with important skills that are lacking in local populations, which has positive effects on the economy of the nations. Cell phones, global positioning system(GPS) or electronic card keys may have made our lives more convenient. But companies can also use them as spies. According to a recent study, 51.3 percent of 204 workers surveyed said they have been monitored by some kind of camera or electronic gadget at their companies.

However, only 24.2 percent said they had been consulted before such systems were installed. The study advised the Labor Minister to look into how the business sector was monitoring its staff.

Studies have shown that it is easy to fool yourself when determining the amount of food you have eaten or the amount of exercise you have done. People often underestimate the amount of food they have eaten, particularly the number of calories consumed. They also tend to exaggerate the amount of exercise they do. Once fat control goals have been set, whether for weight loss, maintenance, or gain, it is important to keep records of your behavior. Keeping a diet log and an exercise log can help you monitor your behavior and watch changes in weight and body fatness.

Proverbs are abundant in all languages. We use proverbs to make points more convincingly and more memorably than most of us could otherwise manage. We also use proverbs because they lend a measure of authority to our opinions, suggesting that what we are saying is simply common sense. Yet proverbial wisdom can be inconsistent. Proverbs are not universal truths. They represent life which is full of opposites;

therefore, there are contradictory proverbs. We warn the cautious against hesitation with “He who hesitates is lost,” but we also warn the bold, “Look before you leap.” When we want help, we say, “Many hands make light work.” When we don’t want it, we grumble that “Too many cooks spoil the broth.”

Some students spend their first weeks in college, lost in a dangerous kind of fantasy. They feel, “All will be well, for here I am in college. I have a student ID in my pocket, a sweatshirt with the college name on it, and textbooks under my arm. All this proves that I am a college student. I have made it. The worst is now behind me.” Such students have given way to a fantasy we all at times surrender to: the belief that we will get something for free. But everyone knows from experience that this hope is a false one. Life seldom gives us something for nothing ― and students must understand that school won’t either.

In most aerosol cans, the bottom curves inward. The shape strengthens the structure of the can. If the can had a flat bottom, the force of the pressurized gas might push the metal outward. A curved bottom has greater structural *durability, just like an architectural arch or dome. With this shape, most of the force applied at the top of the curved metal is distributed to the hardy edges of the can. Also, the shape makes it easier to use up all the product. To empty a flat-bottom, you would have to tilt the can to one side so the product would collect. With a curved bottom, the last bit of product collects in the small area around the edges of the can. This makes it easier to empty the can.

The old saying that you can get more with honey than vinegar is especially true in the workplace. In the past I’ve worked in a feather factory and in a transportation company. At the feather factory, despite the minimum wage, people appreciated their job and worked hard. The management gave us enough holidays and when overtime work was needed we were generally asked instead of being demanded to stay. At the transportation company I once worked for, we got paid more salary but the employees didn’t put their heart into the job. The attitude of the management was like “business is business” and the managers handled the employees poorly and didn’t treat them with respect. This caused employees’ undue errors and much more cost for the company.

8 외국어 영역 ( 영어 ) 고 3

(A) There lived a pastor who had a cat. One day the cat climbed up a tree and then was afraid to come down. The pastor *coaxed and offered warm milk. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not strong enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope with one end to the tree and the other end to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the cat.

(B) Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the mom finally told her little girl, “Well, if God gives you a cat, I’ll let you keep it.” She told the pastor, “I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won’t believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. (a) A cat suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws spread out, and landed right in front of her.”

(C) So he prayed, “Lord, I just commit (b) a cat to your keeping,” and went on about his business. A few days later he went to the grocery store to buy milk, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater, so he asked her, “Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?” She replied, “You won’t believe this,” and told him that her little girl had been begging her for (c) a cat, but she kept refusing.

(D) He did all this, checking his progress in the car frequently, then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach (d) the cat.

But as he moved a little further forward, the rope broke. The tree went “boing!” and the kitten instantly sailed through the air - out of sight. The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they’d seen (e) his cat.

Nobody had seen it. *coax: 달래다

두 사람의 대립된 의견을 읽고, 물음에 답하시오 Person A If a law is regarded as being just and in the common good, any effective way of enforcing it also should be accepted. If, for example, wealthy, respected members of the community continually find ways to evade paying taxes, isn’t the government justified in publishing their names? The idea is that these people would finally be persuaded to perform their legal duty in order to avoid . It will contribute to discouraging people from doing something wrong. I know there are some side effects of enforcing it, but I’m sure there are more positive effects than negative ones.

Person B People maintain that public humiliation is unjust.

If someone owes tax money, the government has enough means of collecting it by taking various kinds of legal action. Publishing his or her name is just a way of putting heavy pressure on that individual and could lead to tremendous psychological damage to the victim. The damage would also extend to the reputations of innocent family members as well. Therefore, we should prevent the government or other annoyed people from spreading vicious rumors about our private affairs in order to destroy our renown, whether or not we are guilty of any wrongdoing.
