The workshop will take place

against a backdrop of relentless rhino carnage, with SA National Parks reporting that three rhinos

have already been killed in Kruger

National Park this year

Professor Montaz Al! of the

applied mathematics department at

Wits University and one of the

organisers of the workshop, said this year's task of solving the rhino problem would be no easy feat.

"There would be various scenar- los that we will have to look at when trying to come to a mathematical

solution, such as what is the job of the rangers, what Is the responsibil- Ity of the government, rhino breed- tug and loss of rhino and what scin-

tific method can be used efficiently.

"We will put all these scenarios in a model with the hope of solving a mathematical problem," said Au.

He said that the mathematicians would take into account the popula-

tion of South Africa's white rhinos, the supply and demand for rhino

horn and the steps being taken to prevent poaching.

Other factors to be considered wifi be the costs of managing wild

"Once we have a solution we wifi

The ultimate goal would be to provide a model to wildlife authori- ties for a possible blueprint to fight

rhino poachers. Alt said that it was unlikely that mathematicians would

come up with a solution in five days.

"Next week is only the start of a year-long project. We are excited

about it," he said.

INCHEON, South Korea:. Four months ago, the parents of a teenage South Korean girl were at their wits' end over her addiction

to surfmg the internet for pornog- raphy. But now, thanks to a horse riding therapy programme, theirdaughter appears to be back in

control of her life.most wired country and wherealmost two-thirds of the popula-tion owns a smartphone, addiction In South Korea, the world's

s cure girl's web

to the internet has become a major problem. Government data says 680 000 children aged between 10 and 19 are internet addicts, or around 10 percent of the age group. "I used to play with comput- ers for seven hours a day, even overnight if my mother went on a trip," said the 14-year-old girl.

Her parents tried art, music therapy and persistent nagging to try and stem their daughter's addiction. When none of these

worked, her school suggested the Riding Healing Centre, a therapy oraanisatiofl that uses horse rid- ma to cure emotional and behav- ioural disorders, which it believes are an underlying cause of inter- net addiction.

"I care abit horses and think about howl could ride them better, which has made me lose interest in computers and the Internet,"

but too, slowly for Sacci

Business confidence rises,

Nompumelelo Magwaza

BUSINESS confidence im- proved last month, but it was stifi not at a convincing level for investors and was still Un-

acceptably low, the SA Cham-

ber of Commerce and Industry

(Sacci) said yesterday

Sacci said that although its business confidence index rose to 93 points in December last year from 91.7 points in Novem- ber, the fourth quarter was the poorest performing quarter of the year

'Although the pace of de-- dine in business confidence moderated during the year, the level at the end of 2012 was stifi

unacceptably low," Sacci said.

However, the promise of improvements in business con-

fidence would only be realised

If the threats of continued labour protests, already re- vealed in the early days of 2013, were dealt with decisively

Sacci advised that the first

step towards a more conducive business.· environment in 2013 was for the soclo-economic

partnership between the gov- ernment, business and labour to urgently realise a common-

ality of approach in responding to the country's current soclo- economic crisis.

Other concerns about labour unrest and militancy

were that it might contribute to the country being cited as an unreliable supplier, which could dent Its standing as a trade partner.

Sacci said a positive contri- bution to business confidence;

on both a monthly and an

annual basis, came from mann- facturing and construction ac- tivity while all the financial sub-indices had a positive im-

pact, with the exception of the

rand exchange rate.

. However, municipal serv- ices, import volumes and retail sales made negative contribu- tions to the Index on both a monthly and annual basis.

Secci said the tighter fiscal

position of the public sector

and serious service delivery

failures -in this sector were

causes for concern as they

risked retarding economic growth and job creation.

There were signs of a possi-·

ble recovery in. certain real ac- tivities towards the end of 2012.

Export volumes, real credit extension, new vehicle sales, manufacturing output and building plans passed a끄 fin.

proved from a year earlier.

The monetary policy stance was making a positive contri- bution towards the business climate and might be carrying more than Its share of the p01- icy burden, the chamber said.

POLOKO TAU poloko.tau@inl.co.za

THE COUNTDOWN has offi- cially begun, and South Africa has expressed its readiness to host the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2013 tournament in just nine days.

A vibrant and colourful cer- emony to launch the 10-day countdown and to wish Bafana Bafana well in the tournament of African football giants was held in Sandton yesterday.

The occasion resembled the 2010 World Cup send-oft The sound of the vuvuzela echoed through the Sandton CBD, where about 2 000 people had gathered for the occasion.

Decked out in national team colours and waving flags, the crowd braved the swelter- ing heat, dancing and singing as the national team players took to the stage to introduce themselves and to greet the crowd.

Local artists and the Africa Cup of Nations 2013 mascot, Takuma the hippo, enter- tained the crowd with music and dance.

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said the country was

"more than ready" and that it could host the games even if they were to start tomorrow.

"Technically and (security-- wise), we're ready, and the excitement is soaring.

GENEVA: South Africa has been praised by the

South Korea players have bans extended

SOCCER - Forty-one players from South Korea's K-League have had their lifetime bans extended worldwide following a match-fixing scandal, although 21 of them have been offered a reprieve, Fifa said yesterday. The 41 had already been banned for life by the Korea Football Association following the scandal which erupted in 2011 and involved matches played the previous year. The scandal led the South Korean government to threaten to wind up the K-League if action was not taken. Ten other players involved in match- fixing were given worldwide bans by Fifa last June, while in March South Korea's volleyball association banned 11 players for life in a bid to curb corruption in domestic sport. Fifa said that a reprieve had been offered to 21 players who turned themselves in during the voluntary reporting period and expressed "grave regret"

about their involvement in match-fixing. Reuters
