From Trash to Music

① 기쁨의 눈물이 제 뺨을 흘러내립니다.

② 저는 매우 행복하고 황홀합니다.

③ 제가 새라면, 저는 날 것입니다.

④ 저는 주위를 봅니다.

⑤ 제 관현악단의 나머지 구성원들이 서로 껴안고 있습니 다.

⑥ 우리의 연주회는 이제 막 끝났습니다,

⑥ 그리고 모두가 서서 우리에게 큰 박수를 쳐주고 있습니 다.

1) Tears of joy are rolling down my cheeks.

2) I’m so happy and thrilled.

3) If I were a bird, I would fly.

4) I look around.

5) The other members in my orchestra are hugging one another.

6) Our concert has just finished

7) and everyone is standing and giving us a big hand.

8) None of us ever expected that this day would come.

9) It has been a long journey.

10) My name is Andrea

11) and I’m a violinist in the Recycled Orchestra.

12) Why is it called the Recycled Orchestra?

13) It’s because our musical instruments are made 14) of objects from a landfill.

15) That’s why it’s also known as the Landfill Harmonic Orchestra.

16) Most of us in the orchestra are from Cateura, 17) a small town in Paraguay.

18) There is a huge landfill in our town.

19) Some people even say that Cateura itself is a giant landfill.

20) Many of us are poor.

21) There weren’t many hopes and dreams in our town.

22) Everything began to change,

23) however, when we met Favio Chávez.

24) Favio was an environmental educator and a musician.

25) He wanted to teach us music, 26) but there was a big problem.

27) There were only a few musical instruments in the whole town.

28) We couldn’t afford to buy new ones.

29) But Favio didn’t give up.

30) He said that we could make musical instruments 31) with objects from the landfill.

32) A talented man named Nicholas 33) was able to put this idea into practice.

34) He made violins from oil drums.

35) He turned water pipes into flutes.

36) We had another problem.

37) No one knew how to play musical instruments.

38) We didn’t even know how to read music.

39) Favio taught us with great patience.

40) Step by step,

41) we began to make some sounds on our instruments.

42) I still remember the first piece of music that we played.

43) It was very short and mostly out of tune.

44) But it was the most beautiful music to us.

45) We felt a new hope in our hearts.

46) From then on,

47) we gathered to practice every day.

48) One day,

49) Favio told us some great news.

50) We were going to have a concert, a real concert!

51) And here we are now in front of hundreds of people.

52) They love our music.

53) The world sends us trash, 54) but we send back music!
