I didn’t realize for a long time that something I take for granted could be someone else’s biggest dream.

One day, I learned about a program that needed volunteers to go to different parts of the world to help build houses for the poor.
어느 날 나는 가난한 사람들을 위한 집을 짓는 것을 돕기 위해 세계의 여러 곳으로 갈 자원봉사자를 필요로 하는 프로그램에 대해 알게 되었다.
After watching a presentation about it, I was really touched by the mission, so I decided to take part in the next volunteer trip.

I had my doubts, though.
하지만 의문도 들었다.
I didn’t know anything about construction, and we’d only be there for two weeks.

Could we really change these people’s lives as the presentation had suggested?

I was going to find out soon enough.

The volunteers and I got to meet the family that would be moving into the home we were going to build the day after we arrived in Karjat, India.
자원봉사자들과 나는 인도의 Karjat 에 도착한 다음 날 우리가 지을 집으로 이사하기로 되어 있는 가족을 만 나게 되었다.
This family of five was living in a one-room hut.
다섯 식구가 방 한 칸짜리 오두막에 살고 있었다.
It was quite clear that this place was not big enough to house all the family members.
이 장소가 모든 가족 구성원들을 수용하기에 충분한 공간이 아님은 명백했다.
In addition to that, there were jars everywhere to catch all the rainwater dripping from the roof.
그것 이외에도 지붕에서 떨어지는 빗물을 받아내기 위해 여기저기 항아리가 놓여 있었다.
With all these jars on the floor, there was hardly any space to sit, let alone lie down. It was shocking to see how they were living.
바닥에 이 항아리들 때문에 눕기는커녕 앉을 자리도 마땅치 않았다. 이들이 어떻게 살아가는지 보는 것은 충 격적이었다.
After meeting them, I felt even more determined to build them a beautiful home.
이들을 만나고 나서 나는 그들에게 아름다운 집을 지어주리라 더욱 더 마음을 다잡게 되었다.
There were clear skies and temperatures over 30˚C that first week. Under the burning sun, we carried bricks, mixed concrete, and dug holes for pipes.
첫 주에는 날이 맑았고 기온은 섭씨 30도가 넘었다. 타오르는 태양 아래 우리는 벽돌을 나르고, 콘크리트를 섞고, 파이프를 심기 위한 구멍을 팠다.
We had to slowly take apart the family’s hut to get more bricks and other materials for
the new house.
새집을 위한 벽돌과 자재들을 더 얻기 위해 원래 오두막을 서서히 해체해야 했다.
Every morning, the family and their neighbors would provide breakfast for everyone.
매일 아침 집주인 가족과 이웃들이 모든 이들에게 아침을 제공해주곤 했다.
Then, all of us — the volunteers, community members, and the family — would start working. We would share food and stories from time to time.
그러고서 자원봉사자들과 지역 주민들, 집주인 가족들이 모두 일을 시작하였다. 때로 먹을 것과 이야기들을 나누었다.
When evening came, we were all very tired and sweaty, but we were happy.
저녁이 되면 모두 지치고 땀투성이가 되었지만 행복했다.
After another week, the home was finally finished.
한 주가 더 지난 후, 집이 마침내 완성되었다.
On the last day, we had a party to celebrate the completion of the new house. It was the best way to end such an incredible experience.

The entire community was there. Everyone was dancing or crying tears of joy.

I will never forget the looks on the faces of the family as they waved goodbye to us.

As I look back on this trip, I find it amazing that so many different people came together to build a house for a family they’d never met.
이 여행을 돌아보면서 나는 그렇게 많은 다양한 사람들이, 전혀 만나보지도 못한 가족을 위해 집을 지으러 함 께 왔다는 사실이 놀라웠다.
For many of us, it was the first time we’d ever built a house. The work was hard, but not one person ever stopped smiling or even complained.
우리 중 많은 이들에게는 집을 짓는 것이 처음이었다. 일은 힘들었지만 단 한 명도 미소를 그치거나 불평하지 않았다.
I’m thankful for the friendships I’ve made through this trip.
나는 이 여행을 통해 얻은 우정에 대해 감사하게 생각한다.
In addition, I learned so much from the other volunteers, the community members, and
this family.
게다가 다른 자원봉사자들과 지역 주민들, 그리고 이 가족으로부터 나는 많은 것을 배웠다.
I thought I was there to give, but I received so much more in return. This experience has inspired me to continue building houses for others.
내가 뭔가를 주러 그곳에 간다고 생각했지만 오히려 너무나 많은 것을 받았다. 이 경험은 다른 이들을 위해 집 짓는 일을 계속하도록 나를 고무시켜주었다.
I hope it will also encourage my friends and family members to help out in the future.

Although two weeks may not seem like a long time, I had the chance to make new friends, learn about a different culture, and, most importantly, do something that makes the lives of others better.
2주라는 시간이 그리 길어 보이지 않을 수도 있지만, 나는 새로운 친구를 사귀고 다른 문화에 대해 배우며 가
장 중요하게는 타인의 삶을 더 나아지 게 만드는 일을 할 기회를 가질 수 있었다.
I am so glad that this family now has a safe place where they can lay their heads.
이 가족이 머리를 누일 수 있는 안전한 장소를 갖게 되었다는 사실이 매우 기쁘다.
I believe everyone deserves a decent home. Right now, there are still many people around the world without a place to live.
나는 모든 사람이 제대로 된 집에서 살 자격이 있다고 믿는다. 지금 이 순간에도 살 곳이 없는 많은 사람들이 아직 세계 도처에 있다.
They are the reason why ordinary people like me want to go out there and help put a roof over their head.
