Talk about elevators around you.

I live on the 17th floor of a high-rise apartment

주변의 엘리베이터에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

나는 고층 아파트 17층에 산다. 고층에 살기 때문 에 엘리베이터 이용은 필수이다. 승객용 엘리베이 터가 2개 있는데, 각각 최대 17명이 탑승할 수 있 다.

계단 옆에는 비상용 엘리베이터가 따로 있다. 주로 화물을 옮길 때나 비상시에만 사용한다. 내가 근무 하는 회사는 건물이 워낙 크고 많은 회사가 입주해 있는 건물이어서, 엘리베이터가 여러 개 있다.

로비 정면에 총 8개의 엘리베이터가 있다. 절반은 고층 전용으로 운행하고 나머지 절반은 저층 전용 으로 운행한다. 이렇게 나누어서 운행을 하니까 조 금 더 효율적이다. 내가 자주 가는 쇼핑 센터에도 엘리베이터가 많은데, 어떤 엘리베이터는 짝수층 전용이고, 다른 것은 홀수층 전용이다.

There's nothing for it.

달리 방법이 없어.

A: Why are you standing outside? Aren't you going to go home? 

B: I can't go upstairs. The elevator is broken. 

A: There's nothing for it. We will have to walk up the stairs. 

B: But I live on the seventeenth floor. It's too high. 

A: 왜 밖에 서 있어? 집에 안 들어가? 

B: 위층까지 올라갈 수가 없어. 엘리베이터가 고장 났어. 

A: 달리 방법이 없네. 계단으로 걸어서 올라가야지. 

B: 하지만 난 17층에 산다고. 너무 높아.

maximum capacity 최대 수용치

본문에서처럼 mximum이라는 단어를 사용하면 그 의미가 더욱 명확해지지만, 대부분의 경우 이를 생 략해도 무방하다. 별도의 설명이 없다면

capacity, 즉 '용량'은 maximum capacity와 같은 의미로 갖는 것으로 이해된다. 대부분의 경우 최소 용량이라는 것은 없거나 중요하지 않기 때문 이다. 

What is the maximum capacity of the fuel tank?

연료통의 최대 용량은 얼마나 됩니까? 

The bus I rode this morning was filled to capacity.

아침에 탄 버스에는 최대 수용 인원까지 꽉 차 있었 다.
