I once heard a story in which someone was killed. He went to a place where he could get anything he wanted.

(A) However, it was not granted to him.

Finally, he gave up and said to the person in charge, “If I have to live with this for all eternity, I’d rather be in hell.” The person in charge looked at him, smiled, and said,

“Well, where do you think you are?”

(B) If he wanted a glass of water, it would magically appear; if he wanted to play chess, an opponent would be right there; if he wanted to juggle thirteen balls, they would fly right. He never had hunger and was never tired. This person never got sick.

(C) Nice for a time, he liked it a lot, but he got tired of this quickly and wanted to have some pain and change in his life. He went to the one who was in charge of this land and demanded some of the pains that he had in his previous life.

Thanks to the oldest part of the brain, you

understand what other people say to you and you are able to express what you want to communicate in words. It also processes words that you hear or read, images, sounds, bodily sensations and emotional states.

(A) A very interesting discovery, is it not? Its implications are even more interesting because they pertain not only to images and sounds, but also to emotional states and bodily sensations.

(B) However, this part of the brain

understands only simple language and is incapable of, among other things,

understanding or processing negations. For example, in order to execute the command:

Don’t think about the color blue, the brain has to first evoke the term blue and only then somehow negate it.

(C) In other words, it doesn’t matter whether you say Don’t think about the color blue or Think about the color blue because at the subconscious level it is exactly the same command ― your mind reacts to both sentences in an identical way, i.e. an image

The groups to which we belong are powerful forces in our lives. In fact, to belong to a group is to yield to others the right to make certain decisions about our behaviour.

(A) For example, if you belong to a stamp collectors club, the group’s influence may center on your display of knowledge about stamps and, perhaps, fairness in trading them. Other groups, in contrast, such as the family, control many aspects of our

behaviour.

(B) When parents say to their 15-year-old daughter, ‘As long as you are living under my roof, you had better be home by midnight,’ they show their expectation that their daughter, as a member of the family, will conform to their ideas about many aspects of life.

(C) It means that if we belong to a group, we assume an obligation to act according to the expectations of other members of that group. Although this principle holds true for all groups, some groups wield influence over only small segments of our behaviour.

Although a small number of languages, such as English and Spanish, are becoming global, local populations are preserving their distinctiveness by developing their own unique usage of English, Spanish, and so on.

(A) Similarly, the Spanish spoken in the slums surrounding Caracas, Venezuela, is very different from the Spanish spoken among the elite in Madrid, Spain. An additional point is that all languages are continually evolving, and that changes in both languages and language groups are part of inevitable and natural developments.

(B) From this viewpoint, there are many different ‘Englishes’ and ‘Spanishes.’ The English spoken by the working class in the Grand Bahamas, one could argue, is very different from the Queen’s English spoken in upper-class circles in the south of England.

(C) Although these are interesting points that have some validity, they do not negate the fact that a small number of languages are becoming dominant globally. Despite the argument that many different types of English are spoken, it is English rather than one of the thousands of already extinct languages that now serves as the global language of diplomacy, science and business.

The issue of mobility is closely associated with accessibility. Mobility is the means by which places become accessible.

Accessibility has become increasingly important for many reasons. In the past, many individuals lived comparatively isolated lives.

(A) Thus, to maintain a certain lifestyle, mobility and accessibility are critical issues to be addressed. This potentially includes access to the workplace, the marketplace, educational facilities, healthcare facilities, and governmental agencies. All of these resources are needed to maintain individuals and a viable population.

(B) Farmers, for instance, could provide for most of their own needs. Similarly, craftsmen often produced their artifacts in the space of their own homes. In each of these cases, the workplace and the living space were one and the same.

(C) With the emergence of modern capitalism and commodity exchange, the workplace and home became separate realms, thereby increasing the importance of personal mobility. In the current social context, modern lifestyles are highly interdependent on many places and many resources.

[ 어휘] · telephony 통화법 · comprise ~으로 이루어져 있 다 · take on trust 그대로 믿다 · informant 정보 제공자 · detective work 조사 작업 · qualified 자격을 갖춘 · convinced 확신하는 · expertise 전문 지식〔기술〕·

Although there has been limited use so far,

the Internet offers exciting possibilities for researchers conducting online individual and group interviews. Unless Voice-over-Internet telephony is being used, the interview is not spoken, but comprises a set of written questions and answers.

(A) Researchers also have to either take on trust that their informants are who they say they are, or do some detective work to try and establish whether they are really qualified to speak on the subject. Similarly, informants need to be convinced about the identity and honesty of a researcher they have not met.

(B) However, online interviews can be cheaper than face-to-face interviews

because there are no travel costs, they allow the researcher to reach informants across the world (or at least those people that have email access and the technical expertise), there are no tapes to transcribe and the data is already typed ready for analysis.

(C) Clearly this changes our understanding of ‘interview’. Because responses have to be typed, they are likely to be shorter and less expansive than in a face-to-face interview. In online interviews, we also lose the richness of gestures and facial expressions and the context of a faceto-face interview.

In southern Mesopotamia, intensive

irrigation initially produces agricultural yields that support growing prosperity, security, and stability. The Third Dynasty of Ur pursued such a course.

(A) The political system loses its resource base and is destabilized. Large irrigation systems that require central management are useless once the state lacks the

resources to maintain and direct that which it created.

(B) For a few years all was well ― at least for the rulers. Unfortunately, this strategy plants the seed of its own fall. After a few years of overirrigating, saline groundwater rises and destroys the basis of agricultural productivity.

(C) It expanded the irrigation system and encouraged growth of population and

settlement. To capture this enhanced energy flow, it established a vast bureaucracy to collect taxes.

[어휘] · objectively 객관적으로 · torment 괴롭히다 · qualitative 질적인 · attain (지위 따위를) 차지하다 · commercial 상업적인 · upset 속상한 · gratified 만족한

People who are objectively better off than

others can feel worse if they can imagine a still more positive outcome more readily.

(A) The silver medalist in such a competition has come closer to winning gold than has the bronze medalist, and so is more likely to be tormented by thoughts of what might have happened.

(B) Consider the bronze and silver medalists at an Olympic competition; who do you suppose is happier? In such competitions there is a qualitative difference between the gold medalist and everyone else: only the gold medalist has won the competition, attained glory, and can expect lucrative commercial endorsements.

(C) In contrast, the bronze medalist has come dangerously close to winning nothing at all, and may therefore be especially pleased at having avoided this misfortune. If the silver medalist is upset because “I could have won gold” whereas the bronze medalist is gratified because “At least I won a medal,”

the silver medalist may feel less happy than the bronze medalist.
