Do you remember your mom taking you to a

doctor's office? The doctor decided to give you some medicine. She rolled up your sleeves, and gave you a shot in the upper arm. Ouch! That hurt, didn't it? What if a shot given in the arm didn't hurt? Well, maybe in the future, it won't. Some scientists have been studying how the lowly mosquito is able to bite us without us knowing. When they figure out the secrets, the doctor's shot might become a painless procedure. They hope that the painless needle could eventually be used to take blood samples in labs, or that it could lead to the development of small wireless monitoring devices, which would be attached to the bodies of people such as diabetics.

① The nurse gave you a shot in the arm. ② The shot was painful like a mosquito's bite. ③ Scientists found inspiration from a mosquito biting humans without causing pain.

④ Scientists has created a painless needle and it is already tested on humans.

⑤ A painless needle is expected to be used to inject blood and invent medications to treat diabetics.

If you look at an airplane's wings, you can sometimes see that the tips are turned upwards. These are called "winglets" and they may look neat, but they have measurable benefits. When engineers studied birds, ① they observed that birds' wings have tips that turned up in flight. ② They found that the tips smooth the flow of air, which helps them conserve energy when flying. ③ They thought that if it worked for birds, why not for airplanes? The end result is that the airplane winglets help keep planes smaller, and ④ they save about 10% in fuel costs. According to ⑤ them, this is beneficial not just for the environment but for passengers' wallets, too.

People who study biomimetics look to solve human problems by copying how nature does it. It might sound complicated, but it is much easier once you understand. Let's look at some examples of biomimetics we see today or will see in the near future.

One of the most notable examples of biomimetic architecture can be seen in a building in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare. The building was inspired by termite mounds which are built from soil, tree, and sand. Termites are extremely sensitive to heat, as they live in groups of over 2 million. Even when the

temperature outside is as high as 40 degrees Celsius, the termite mounds maintain an internal temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. They are built in a way that hot air rises out and cool air comes in though the bottom. This system is more effective at maintaining temperature than any other air moving equipment and cooling system made by humans. Another interesting example is the study of the thorny devil lizard of Australia. This lizard lives in incredibly dry conditions. Dr. Andrew Parker has been studying how this lizard gets water in such an extremely dry environment. It turns out that they drink water by burying their bodies in wet sand, and then drawing the moisture out of it. The applications of this system for men are huge. We may be able to design systems to

When we observe nature, we can be amazed by its beauty and its grand scale. We should remember ① what nature has had millions of years to

experiment. Now, as we observe nature on all levels big and small, we have the technology and the means to copy ② which nature has perfected. Because there is still so much we do not know about nature, there is still much ③ leaving to discover. However, despite ④ of the potential of the field, and the brilliant people who work in it, biomimetics has led to just a few business successes. Some people blame industry because its short-term expectations about how soon a project should become profitable ⑤ conflict with the time-consuming nature of biomimetics research.

Nonetheless, there will be more opportunities for further development in this area and new strategies to be practiced. There is plenty of work to do for biomimetic designers and architects in the years ahead. Maybe one day you will

Sea urchins may be eaten in some parts of the world, but they can also damage parts of the sea environment with their bony mouths.

(A) The efficiency of this natural design is now being tested for incorporation into missions in space. When small robots are sent to another planet to collect soil samples, the standard method is to use something inefficient like a small shovel.

(B) By copying the design of a sea urchin mouth, scientists believe it will be easier to collect samples. Amazingly, a design developed naturally in the deep sea may soon be seen in deep space.

(C) A sea urchin mouth looks a lot like a five-fingered claw you might see while trying to pick up prizes at the arcade.
