<Tourniquet>는 <Tourniquet – Overturn – Baton> 시리즈 의 일부를 변형한 작업으로 작품의 핵심 요소가 여러 조각으 로 해체되어 재조합된 모습으로 나타난다. 작품 전체는 2차적 연결고리인 석고붕대로 지탱되는데, 석고붕대는 ‘지혈대 (tourniquet)’라는 단어의 어원을 드러낼 뿐 아니라 본래 검은 색인 작품을 흰색으로 변화시키는 역할을 한다. 작품의 색과 형태는 모두 이와 같이 흑백 도치(倒置)의 영향을 받게 되며 이는 마치 구소련에서 실시한 ‘정치 심리 실험’을 연상하게 한 다. 구소련은 대중의 의식을 국가의 이해에 맞추어 조정할 수 있는지 보기 위한 실험을 진행했다. 아이들에게 검은색을 보 면 흰색이라고 말하고, 흰색을 보면 검은색이라고 말하게 하 는 것이었다. 프랑스어 단어인 ‘tourniquet’는 의학 용어로, 사 지의 연조직을 압박해 출혈을 멎게 하는 도구를 뜻한다. 민중 의 사회적 행동은 정권의 입장에서 보면 피를 흘리는 것과 같 다고 비유할 수 있는데, 이는 지혈대로 인해 규제되고 봉쇄된 다. ‘Overturn(뒤집기)’ 파트는 <Tourniquet>의 바리케이드 부 분에 해당하며 쿠데타와 정권 교체를 상징한다. 여기서 주목 해야 할 점은 <Tourniquet>의 해체가 현실의 삶 속에서 실제 로 일어났다는 사실이다. 2013년 10월에 <Tourniquet> 미로 가 키예프에서 전시되었고 한 달 뒤 우크라이나 혁명이 일어 났으며 곧이어 대통령이 탄핵되었다. 키예프에서 전시한 원본 은 현재 여러 개로 분해되어 민병대의 야경봉으로 사용하고 있으며, 향후 새로운 지혈대로 다시 조립될 계획이다.
Turniket is a part of the transmutation, Tourniquet – Overturn – Baton, which demonstrates the disintegration of its central elements into pieces. The whole process is supported by a secondary linking member, a gypsum bandage that not only discloses the etymology of the word, “tourniquet” (French) but also transforms black into white. Thus, both the color and transcription of the form are subject to achromatic inversion. This resembles political psychology experiments conducted in the USSR wherein children were persuaded to say black is white and vice versa, in order to manipulate people’s consciousness in the interests of the state. “Tourniquet” originates from medical terminology and refers to the tool designed to compress soft tissues of extremities in order to stop bleeding. The movement of a crowd is thus compared to bleeding that is directed and blocked. The part, “Overturn,”
is made up of barricades of tourniquets representing a coup d’état and changeover of policy makers. It is remarkable that the process of the tourniquet’s decomposition actually occurred in real life. Initially, there was a labyrinth of functioning tourniquets presented in Kiev in October 2013, followed by the Ukrainian revolution one month later, and the President’s impeachment. The tourniquet has now disintegrated and turned into a large number of nightsticks, which will be later assembled into new tourniquets.
