시리아-미국 의료협회에 의하면 ‘M2’라고도 알려진 오마르 빈 압둘 아지즈 병원이 2016년 6월부터 12월까지 14차례나 친정 부 무장병력의 공습 대상이 되었다고 한다. M2 병원은 2016 년 8월 중순까지 알레포 지역에 남아 있던 중환자실을 갖춘 병원 세 곳 중 하나이자 소아과가 있는 유일한 병원이기도 했 다. 포렌식 아키텍처는 병원 내부와 외부에서 촬영한 사진과 비디오를 이용해 공습의 결과를 분석했다. 각각의 촬영 장면 에는 건물의 작은 부분만 포착되어 있었지만, 각 클립을 조합 하고 상호 참조함으로써 건물을 ‘3D 모델’로 재구성할 수 있 었다. 그들은 재구성한 건물에서 피폭된 위치와 그로 인해 훼 손된 부분까지도 재현했다. 피폭 당시 여러 대의 CCTV 카메 라가 계속 작동하고 있어서 모든 공습 장면이 녹화된 덕분이 다. 포렌식 아키텍처는 모델링한 빌딩에 각각의 카메라를 원 래 방향대로 설치했고, CCTV 카메라가 포착한 장면과 핸드헬 드 비디오, 사진을 가상 공간 안에서 통합했다. 작업을 통해서 각 미디어 사이에 실재하는 연관성을 찾아냈으며 서로의 연관 에 따른 위치를 입증했다. 또한 공간적 연결은 결과적으로 모 든 장면을 정확한 위치에 자리 잡게 하여 공습 범위와 횟수를 확인하게 해주었다. 이번 작업은 “파괴적인 패턴의 공격 뒤에 숨어 있는 의도는 무엇인가?”라는 질문을 던지고 있다.
According to the Syrian American Medical Society, the Omar Bin Abdul Aziz Hospital, also known as M2, was subject to 14 strikes by pro-government forces from June to December 2016. M2 Hospital was one of only three hospitals left in Aleppo by mid-August 2016 offering intensive care facilities and the only hospital with a paediatric department. Photographs and videos taken in and around the hospital facilitated Forensic Architecture’s analysis of the consequences of these strikes. Each piece of footage captured only a small part of the building;
however, by combining and cross-referencing these clips, Forensic Architecture was able to reconstruct the building as a 3D model, and locate the exact sites of the bombings and the resultant damage. There were a number of CCTV cameras in the hospital that are on continuously, capturing every strike. Forensic Architecture located each camera and its orientation in the building, in order to integrate footage from the CCTV cameras, handheld videos and photographs within virtual space, creating a tangible connection between these media, and verifying their positions in relation to each other. The spatial link created as a result allowed them to anchor all footage to this exact location and to corroborate the range and multiplicity of the strikes, raising questions about the intent behind this destructive pattern of events.

퍼트리샤 레이턴은 30년 넘게 공공미술의 영역에서 예술 작 업을 해왔다. 그는 세계 각지에서 대규모 커미션 작품을 의뢰 받으며 작품이 설치되는 현장의 역사 유산과 지역 환경, 생태 적 상태를 연결 짓는 작업을 한다. 주로 야외에서 작업하며 그 곳의 풍경에 직접적으로 개입한다. 풍경과 환경은 작품의 방 향과 재료 선택에 영향을 미친다. 지면을 성형하든 돌을 이용 해 작업하든, 그의 조각은 관람자를 조용히 끌어들여 자연과 하나가 되도록 해준다. 레이턴의 조각은 다양한 단계로 작용 하며 대중의 폭넓은 반응을 끌어낸다. 차를 타고 가다 슬쩍 보 든 한참 동안 천천히 감상하든 모든 작업은 관객을 사로잡고 깊은 사색으로 이끈다.
<The Circle: A Meditation on Nature(서클─자연에 대한 명 상)>는 ‘강원국제비엔날레2018’ B홀 전시 공간 한가운데에 설 치된다. 조각은 정원 같은 공간을 창출하며, 인간이 본질적으 로 찾아야 할 사색과 정신의 고양을 위한 공간으로 제공된다.
한편으로 서클은 다중성으로부터 단일성으로 복귀함을 상징 한다. 이는 예술과 자연, 그 외의 모든 것들이 하나되는 궁극적인 일치의 상태를 말하기도 한다.
Patricia Leighton has been making art in the public realm for over 30 years, creating large-scale commissions worldwide, connecting the sites with their historical heritage and with the relevant environmental and ecological conditions. Leighton often works in the open, intervening directly with the landscape. The landscape and environs influence her approach and her use of materials.
Whether she is shaping the earth, or working with stone, her sculptures quietly draw the viewer into the work, connecting them to nature. Leighton’s sculptures function on a number of levels, enabling a wide public to respond to the work. Whether seen quickly from a vehicle or pondered at length, the works captivate their audience and arouse contemplation. The Circle: A Meditation on Nature, is sited in the center core of the Gangwon International Biennale 2018. The sculpture creates a nurturing, garden-like space, offering time for reflection and elevation of the spirit. The Circle symbolizes the return to unity from multiplicity. It corresponds to the ultimate state of oneness.
