UNIQUE, SPECIAL PERFORMANCE OF TRADITIONAL EAST COAST STYLE KOREAN SHAMAN RITUAL IN THE ROYAL CONSERVATOIRE IN THE HAGUE

The Faculty of Art in co -operation with the Association Netherlands-Korea is proud to present a
performance of two Korean musicians who are part of the prominent music company of Kim Sôkch'ul that is specializing in Shaman rituals of the East coast of Korea.
Professor Kim Junghee is one of the leading figures in Kim Sokch'ul's ritual troupe - the troupe appointed by the government to represent the East Coast style of Korean shaman ritual (Intangible Cultural Asset, no. 82).
He is also a music teacher in the Korean School of the Traditional Performing Arts (Han'guk Yesul
Chonghap Hakkyo) and an active participant in many different types of musical project. He appears on over 10 different commercially available recordings. Kim learnt the ritual arts from his father, his uncles (including Kim Sokch'ul) and his aunts, beginning his traditional-style tuition at the age of 6. He is widely regarded as being one of Korea’s finest kkwaenggwari players (small hand-gong) and is a master of improvisation on this instrument and also the changgo (hourglass drum).
Jo Jonghun is Kim’s foremost disciple and the leading light in the young generation of East Coast ritualists. A graduate of the Korean School of the Traditional Performing Arts, he has now been participating in rituals with the troupe for 5 years. Like Kim, Jo is also actively involved in many other projects.
Dr. Simon Mills is a self-employed teacher and member of staff in the School of Oriental and African Studies (London University). Dr. Mills has been involved in researching Korean East Coast ritual music since 1999. In this concert, he provides accompaniment on the large gong (ching). Dr. Simon Mills will give an introduction on the performance.
