PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA GENEVA

The 24th Session of UPR Working Group Review of Singapore <Check against delivery>

Geneva, 27 January, 2016

Statement of the Republic of Korea

Thank you, Mr. President.

The Republic of Korea warmly welcomes the delegation of Singapore. We commend Singapore for its accession to the CRPD in 2013 as well as its signing the ICERD in 2015. Also, Singapore’s practical efforts towards the realization of human rights are well-noted. Specifically, the Healthcare 2020 Master-plan, the Silver Support Scheme, the Government-Paid Paternity Leave are good examples in this regard.

In the hope that Singapore will continue this positive momentum and also make further efforts to bring its system into conformity with international human rights standards, we would like to recommend that:

First, Singapore facilitate acceding to both the ICCPR and the ICESCR.

Second, Singapore seriously consider establishing an independent national human rights institution with a wide mandate to protect and promote human rights, especially in cooperation with civil society.

Finally, we wish Singapore all the best in its second UPR review.

Thank you, Mr. President. /End/
