M: Hi. How can I help you?

W: I’m looking for a flowerpot that I can use for my creeping plant.

M: If you’re looking for a pot with a hanger, we have several you can choose from.

W: Actually, I need a pot I can put on the windowsill, not one with a hanger.

M: I see. Then how about this square-shaped one?

W: Well, I have a few square-shaped pots at home. Let’s see.... Oh, that round one looks good.

M: You mean the one with a rim? That’s quite a popular one.

W: Yes. I like its simple design. I’ll take that one.

M: Good. Do you need a saucer as well?

W: No. I don’t need one. I have extra ones at home.

M: Okay.

[knocking sound] W: May I come in?

M: Sure. Please have a seat!

W: Thank you.

M: Let me see. Sujin, you studied law and already have a college degree.

Why do you want to transfer to our English Education Department?

W: I studied law because my father wanted me to, but I’ve always wanted to be a teacher.

M: Can you tell me why you are qualified to join this department?

W: I’ve taken many English education courses. I also took an overseas language program for a year in the U.S.

M: You seem well-prepared. Last question. Why do you want to attend our university rather than the others?

W: My mother graduated from your university. Her major was history, and she’s always been proud of being part of this university.

M: I see. That’ll be all for the interview.

W: Hello, students. I’m Doctor Kim from General Hospital. Today, I’ll talk about bad breath. Do you brush regularly and still have bad breath? If so, you should consider it seriously. Bad breath can indicate a health problem.

Though not common, bad breath can be caused by chronic liver disease. It is also caused by other non-oral diseases such as kidney failure and diabetes. If you have one of these diseases, your bad breath won’t disappear even though you rinse with mouthwash. If bad breath continues for more than several days, you should consult a doctor and make sure it is not caused by a serious disease.

M: Hi, Joan. Where are you going?

W: Hi, Bill. I was on my way to the auditorium.

M: I’m going there, too. I have to practice for the school festival.

W: Oh, you, too? I’m practicing dancing for this year’s ‘We’re Dancers!

Contest.’

M: A dance contest? Not a singing contest? Last year, you won first prize, didn’t you?

W: I did, but I want to try something new this year. What about you?

M: I’m going to direct an orchestra called ‘Little Orchestra of Our Own.’

W: I didn’t know you were a conductor.

M: Well, I’m just a beginner. I need lots of practice.

W: If you keep practicing, I’m sure you’ll give a great performance.

M: I just hope our performance isn’t too disappointing. I’ve already invited many guests, including my family.

W: Don’t worry. You’ll do just fine.

M: Look. This seminar room is a little larger than the one you just saw.

W: Yes, I think it’ll be big enough for our company’s conference.

M: When do you need it?

W: Our company needs it for five days from July 14th to 18th.

M: Let me see.... Oh, this room is only reserved from July 7th to 11th.

W: Good! How much is the rent?

M: $250 a day, so it would be $1,250 for five days. But the rental fee for the audio and video systems is extra.

W: Is it? How much is it?

M: It’s $80 a day, so it’s $400 for five days.

W: Hmm... $1,650 all together.... It seems a little expensive.

M: The rent has gone up starting this month. You could have rented this room with $1,170 for five days last month.

W: Well, I’ll go with this room anyway.

W: Jake, did you have a good lunch?

M: Yes. I went to Chang’s Restaurant. I love the food there.

W: Do you? Well, I don’t like their food.

M: Why not? The restaurant is clean and has delicious food. Besides, the prices are great!

W: True, but don’t you think most of their food is too salty?

M: No. Their food suits my taste.

W: I think you’re used to their salty food.

M: Maybe, but I like it.

W: I think restaurants put too much salt in their food. They should reduce it.

It’s not healthy.

M: Then they might lose many of their customers... like me.

W: Do you know that many of us get more than twice the recommended daily amount of salt?

M: Really? I didn’t know that.

W: Yes. It’s time for restaurants to think about their customers’ health.

M: We have more good news. A newly-created arts space, the Carolin Gallery, will be opening within the City Library. The gallery will provide an excellent opportunity for artists to exhibit their work at no charge.

Individual and group exhibition applications are welcome from young, amateur artists as well as professionals. The gallery will be officially opened on March 23rd, and a photo exhibition will show the works of photographer Darren Bennett from the opening day, March 23rd, to April 12th. Applications to exhibit are available from March 17th, one week before the opening day. For further information, please contact the Arts Department of Carolin City at 9747-7200.

M: Ms. Park, it was a really nice talk!

W: Oh, Mr. Kim. It seems we only meet at conferences like this.

M: Actually, I’ve been waiting to talk to you.

W: Oh? What about?

M: I was just wondering if you could do me a favor.

W: A favor? What is it?

M: Our school is selecting the best English essays for an Essay Contest, so we need experts like you to help us choose the best ones.

W: You want me to be a judge?

M: Right. Could you do that?

W: No problem, but let me check my schedule. When am I supposed to judge?

M: One day between May 21st and 23rd.

W: I’m available on May 23rd.

M: Thank you, Ms. Park. I owe you one.

W: Hello, students! As you may know, each year our school guidance office organizes ‘Future Planning Week.’ This is part of our school’s guidance program for your successful school life and future career. You and your parents will have meetings with our counselors starting next Monday.

Through those meetings with the counselors, you’ll get advice and information about high school graduation requirements, course selections for your senior year, and scholarships. Information about your future college entrance will also be provided, including qualifications for entrance, financial aid, and the major you want to study. I hope you and your parents obtain useful information from this program. Thank you.

M: Ms. Kim, you didn’t have to come to our office.

W: No problem. I had some errands nearby, so I just dropped by.

M: Did you bring in the form we asked you to fill out?

W: Yes. Here it is.

M: Let’s see.... How about the moving insurance? You didn’t check it.

W: Didn’t I? I’ll want the insurance.

M: Okay. You’re moving from Wilmington to Evans on August 14th, right?

W: That’s right. How much will it cost?

M: Well, since you chose the full service with packing, the cost starts from 600 dollars including the insurance.

W: You mean it can cost more than 600 dollars?

M: Yes. The total cost can be different according to the amount of items in your house.

W: I see. And you relocate all the goods and furniture in my new house, right?

M: Sure. Will you check this item list? Then I’ll let you know the total cost.

W: Okay.

W: It’s my first time to visit this aquarium.

M: Me, too. I’ve always wanted to come here.

W: Oh! Here’s the show schedule.

M: Let’s see. How about going to see a dolphin show at 3:00? I’ve heard it’s great.

W: It’s almost 3:00. I don’t think we can make it. We can still see the other dolphin show, though.

M: Did you forget our appointment with Ms. Mallon at 6:00?

W: You’re right! Let’s watch the 4-D movie, Amazing Sharks. It starts in half an hour.

M: Watching a movie at an aquarium? Not a good choice. How about the Shark’s World? It says we can feed sharks.

W: But it’s at the Green Aquarium in the other building. Why don’t we watch the sea lions first, and then the Shark’s World?

M: Good idea! We’ll see the Dolphin Show next time.

M: Do you love books? What do you do with your books after finishing reading them? Probably many of you just put them on the shelf and end up not opening them again. Why don’t you free your books, and let them travel the world? You can go to bookcrossing.com and get a unique BookCrossing ID number for your book. After labeling the book, you can leave it at a public place, like a park bench, to be picked up by a stranger.

Your book may touch the life of a reader you’ve never met. Just join BookCrossing and make the whole world a library.

W: Number One

W: I’d like you to print these picture files. Does it take long?

M: No. It takes just thirty minutes. You can have a seat there.

W: Number Two

W: May I take a picture of you and my child? She’s a big fan of yours.

M: Sure. I’m honored to be a model for your little princess.

W: Number Three

W: It’s lovely! Where did you get the little doll?

M: I bought it at the local flea market. It was a real bargain.

W: Number Four

W: Excuse me. You can’t carry a camera in this area.

M: Oh, I’m sorry. I thought it’d be okay if I didn’t take any pictures.

W: Number Five

W: Hey! What do you think about my costume for the parade?

M: Wow! I can’t believe you made this yourself.

(9)

M: Pam, what are the pictures for?

W: They’re for my cultural studies report. It’s about the Navajo people.

M: You mean a Native American tribe?

W: Yeah. These pictures are about their religious rituals. Their rituals are mostly intended to cure illnesses.

M: What’s the person in this picture doing?

W: He’s a medicine man. He’s performing a ceremonial treatment by singing and chanting.

M: Look at this painting. I’ve seen something like this before.

W: It’s a sand painting. Making a sand painting on the ground is part of the ritual. They believe the painting is the place where humans and gods meet.

M: I like the designs and colors.

W: Can you see these five colors: red, yellow, blue, black, and white? Each has its own special meaning.

M: Really? Tell me more.

W: Well, white means a new beginning while black means death.

M: What about blue?

W: It’s a symbol of happiness. I think a sand painting tells a lot about the Navajos’ beliefs.

M: Right. Using a sand paining to treat sick people.... That’s interesting.

M: I once had the same problem, but I got over it. Perhaps I can help.

W: Please! Do you have any tips for me?

M: Do you drink coffee before you go to bed?

W: No. I don’t drink anything that contains caffeine.

M: Then, what have you tried to get some sleep at night?

W: I’ve taken warm baths. I’ve listened to relaxing music. I’ve even tried deep breathing.

M: And you still have trouble sleeping at night? Well, what about during the day?

W: I somehow manage to take short naps.

M: Well, I think I see the problem.

W: Really? What’s that?

M: __________________________________________________________

17번

W: Jim! Long time no see. You look great!

M: Thanks. I’ve been working out at the gym. I also commute to work by bike.

W: I see. I’m not sure why it didn’t work for me.

M: What do you mean?

W: I also worked out at the gym and rode a bike. But nothing changed.

M: You mean you didn’t lose any weight at all?

W: No. I also took yoga and a belly dance class. I even changed my diet!

M: Wow! You tried a lot of things! How long did you do them?

W: For three or four months at most, I guess.

M: Well, you should have kept working out for at least a year.

W: A year? How can you do that? Don’t you get bored?

M:

M: Good. But I think I need to change my glasses.

W: Why? What’s wrong with them?

M: I have difficulty reading words on the board.

W: Really? Let’s have your eyes checked tomorrow at the clinic.

M: Yes. I hope my eyes don’t get any worse.

W: Jack, if you’re worried about your eyes, you should stop doing things that harm them.

M: Mom, could you be more specific?

W: For one thing, you play with your cell phone too much while you’re on the school bus. That’s certainly not good for your eyes.

M: But it would be too boring without it on the bus.

W:

19번

[Telephone rings.] W: Hello.

M: Hi, Brenda. This is Mike.

W: Hi. What’s up?

M: I’ve got the directing position in a musical.

W: Good for you! What’s the title?

M: Have you heard of ‘Lost Dreams’? It was a big hit in England last year.

W: Of course, I’ve heard of it. It’s the musical I’ve wanted to work in, especially, in the role of the leading actress.

M: Great! That’s why I called you. I think you’re perfect for the role. Would you take it?

W: Fantastic! [ pause] Oh, but I don’t know what to do.

When she’s tucked in for the night, noises begin to come from the upstairs apartment. The noise gets louder and louder. She can no longer put up with it; however, she thinks a face-to-face confrontation might make the matter worse. She decides to call the apartment manager.
