W: How was your camping trip to Collins National Park?

M: It was great! I’ll never forget singing and dancing together around the campfire.

W: Sounds like you had a great time. How did you like sleeping in a tent?

M: ____________________________________________________

2번

W: Robin, is this the new photocopier that arrived yesterday?

M: Yes. It’s the newest model, and it has a lot of new functions.

W: Look at all these buttons. I’ll never be able to figure out how to use it.

M: ____________________________________________________

W: Hey, Craig. What are you looking at?

M: This advertisement for the city rock-climbing competition.

W: You’re good at climbing. Why don’t you enter?

M: I don’t really enjoy competing with others. I just enjoy doing it by myself without any competition.

W: Maybe it’s less stressful to climb by yourself, but a competition will motivate you to keep getting better.

M: I know, but no one likes losing, including me.

W: But imagine if you win. You’ll feel successful and work harder to get even better.

M: And what if I lose?

W: Knowing there’s someone better than you makes you try harder to improve yourself.

M: That makes sense. By competing with others, I’ll get better.

W: Exactly.

M: Good afternoon, students. Have you ever wondered what it’s like working behind the scenes at an art museum? A paid internship at the Yorkshire Museum of Art is your chance to find out. The museum offers internships each fall and spring to high school students. You don’t need any prior work experience or specific knowledge in art to apply. Just an interest in learning about museum careers and great works of art is enough. Also, while interning, you’ll get important information about museum job openings. If you are interested in our internship programs, visit our website at www.yorkshiremuseum.or.uk and complete the application form. Thank you.

W: Honey, what are you doing?

M: I’m looking online for some new sunglasses for our trip to Hawaii next month.

W: Great idea. The sunlight is really strong in Hawaii.

M: Exactly. Look at these sunglasses. How about these?

W: They’re good, but I’d prefer much darker lenses.

M: But honey, from what I’ve just read, lenses that are too dark can actually be harmful for your eyes.

W: Why is that? Don’t darker lenses have better protection from sunlight?

M: No. That’s what people think, but it isn’t true.

W: Really?

M: How dark they are has nothing to do with blocking dangerous UV rays.

In fact, very dark lenses can cause your pupils to get larger and let in more harmful light.

W: Oh, really? I’m glad you found that out.

W: Hello, class. Today we’re going to talk about cats. Cats served a useful purpose in ancient times by killing rats and harmful insects. By about 1,500 BC, cats had become sacred to the Egyptians. At that time, harming cats was punishable by death. The Egyptian goddess of love and fertility was represented as a woman with the head of a cat. Archaeologists have discovered huge Egyptian cat cemeteries with thousands of cat mummies.

They were buried with mummified rats and mice. Amazing, isn’t it?

In ancient Rome, the cat became a symbol of liberty and was thought of as a guardian spirit. But during the Middle Ages in Europe, cats were linked to witchcraft and became a symbol of evil. As a result, countless numbers of cats were killed during this period. This may have contributed to the spread of the plague, the Black Death, which was carried by rat fleas. It was after the Middle Ages that cats regained their status as cute but deadly rodent exterminators. Now let’s look at some pictures of cats.

M: I must be dreaming! I’m a huge fan of Girls’ Future.

W: Thank you for loving our songs and supporting our group.

M: I really appreciate you coming here and allowing your fans to meet you in person.

W: I truly enjoy fan meetings like this.

M: Glad to hear that. May I take a picture with you?

W: Sure, go ahead. [ Camera clicking sound]

M: Thanks, can I have your autograph on these CDs?

W: Sure! Did you buy them here today?

M: Yes. I just bought all five of your CDs here. Your songs have been playing throughout this place all day.

W: I’m really glad to hear our songs here. So did you come here by yourself?

M: No. I came with my older sister. She’s somewhere here looking around at other CDs. She’s a big fan of yours, too.

W: Well, thanks. Please tell her I said ‘Hi.’

M: I will. Thank you.

M: Jane, it’s been a long time since we graduated from elementary school.

W: Yeah. Hey, look! There is a new painting on the wall.

M: That’s cool. A bee flying around a flower. I love it.

W: Brian, I wonder how else the school has changed.

M: Me, too. Let’s look around. [ Pause] Look, the two big trees are still there next to the gate.

W: I loved those trees. Oh! I’m glad they kept the old fountain with the dolphin statues.

M: So am I. Hey, look! They changed the clock over the entrance of the building. Now it’s a digital clock.

W: Probably because the digital clock is more visible at night.

M: You’re right. Hey, what’s that on the roof over there?

W: You mean those black squares? I think they’re solar panels.

[ Cellphone rings.]

W: Hi, Kyle, have you left work yet?

M: Not yet. I’ll be leaving in about 10 minutes. Did you buy a gift for Susan’s housewarming party tonight?

W: Yeah. I bought a scented candle.

M: Great idea. It’ll make her apartment smell really nice.

W: But actually, I think we should give her something else, too.

M: I know what you mean. Maybe just one candle isn’t enough.

W: Exactly. I wanted to buy her a houseplant. But the flower shop near our house was closed today, so I couldn’t get one.

M: No problem. There’s a flower shop near my office. I can stop by on my way home. Just tell me what kind of plant you want me to get.

W: Any plant is okay. But I heard that her apartment isn’t very big, so a small one would be good.

M: Okay. See you when I get home.

[ Telephone rings.]

W: Hello, St. Andrew Hospital Administration Office. How can I help you?

M: Hello, I’m calling to get information about my previous visits. My name is Paul Brown.

W: Okay. Please hold while I pull up your file. [ Pause] All right. Can I have the last four digits of your phone number?

M: They’re 5-3-4-5.

W: Thanks. The system shows that you came here on the 3rd, 15th, and 24th of last March.

M: Seems right. Would I be able to get the receipts for each visit?

W: Of course. But can I ask what these are for?

M: I need them to file an insurance claim.

W: Ah, if you visit the hospital in person we can print those out for you. Or we can mail them to you.

M: Can you please mail them to me?

W: No problem. Your address is 2107 Melrose Road, right?

M: No. It’s 1158 Highland Drive. I moved last month.

W: Okay. I’ll correct that.

W: I’m so sorry I’m late for the meeting.

M: No problem. I know it’s hard for visitors to find our building.

W: No, that wasn’t the problem. I found this building quite easily.

M: Did it take you a long time to find a place to park? We don’t have enough parking spaces.

W: No, I was lucky. Right when I got in the parking lot, somebody was leaving.

M: You were really lucky. Even employees often find a difficult time finding a parking space.

W: I see. Actually, my son woke up with a fever, so I had to take care of him this morning.

M: Is he all right?

W: Yes, thank you. He got better.

M: Good. Let’s go to the conference room.

M: So, in our last class, we talked a bit about the negative influence of cellphones on young people. In today’s class, we’ll take a look at how today’s young Americans use their cellphones. This latest survey reveals that among Americans under 25, 81% of them sleep with their cellphones next to them on the bed, and 74% check their cellphones immediately after waking up. Also, 97% of teens and 91% of 20-year-olds regularly use cellphones in the bathroom. These types of extreme behavior are often labeled as forms of technology addiction. Therefore, many experts think that young people need to become more aware of their cellphone use habits.

[ Telephone rings.]

M: Good morning. Rush Print Shop. How can I help you?

W: Hi. This is Sandra Collins at Parker Publishing Company.

M: Oh, Ms. Collins. Did you get the samples of the invitation card I sent you?

W: Yes. They look great. We’d like to order five hundred copies of sample A.

M: All right. Do you want them in color or black-and-white?

W: Well, what’s the price difference?

M: Colored ones are two dollars each, and black-and-white ones are one dollar each.

W: Then, we’d like two hundred colored ones and three hundred black-and-white ones.

M: Okay. Is there anything else you need?

W: Yes. Do you sell envelopes too?

M: Yes. 500 envelopes will cost 50 dollars.

W: All right. I’ll have them too.

M: Okay. Hold on. Let me calculate your total.

M: Ms. Morris. Here are the plans for McFarland University’s new heating system.

W: Good. You know all the work needs to be finished before winter.

M: Yes. Work will begin with the Engineering and Science School in March.

W: Why not begin with the Main Library?

M: Because lots of students use it during the semester. It’ll be done during the vacation.

W: Is that why the work on the Student Union and Memorial Hall will start in June?

M: Yes, that’s right.

W: So, in September, they’ll begin to install the new heating system in the Business School.

M: Right. They’ll also begin working on the Law School building at that time.

That’s on the seventh page of the plans.

W: Oh, I see. It looks like the last of the installations will begin in October.

M: Right. On the Medical School building.

W: Sounds good. Leave it here. I’ll check the details after lunch.

W: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Today’s special guest speaker is Diana Nyad, an author, journalist, and world record, long-distance swimmer. In the 1970s, she was considered the greatest long-distance swimmer in the world. Nyad gained national attention in 1975 by swimming 28 miles around New York’s Manhattan Island in just under eight hours. At age 60, having not swum a stroke in decades, she began planning to swim from Cuba to Florida. Finally, on her fifth attempt, she became the first person to officially swim those 110 miles. Her swim broke Penny Palfrey’s 2012 distance record for the Cuba to Florida swim. Now, she’ll tell us about her life and her achievements. Please give a warm round of applause for Ms.

Nyad.

M: Hello, welcome to H&S Youth Hostel.

W: Hi. I’d like to get a room. Are there any vacancies?

M: Yes, but only rooms with a shared bathroom are currently available. All the rooms with a private bathroom are booked.

W: No problem. That’s not a big issue for me. What’s the difference between the Korean and Western styles?

M: The Korean-style rooms have heated floors, so you can sleep on the warm floor, which is part of Korean culture.

W: Interesting! Then I’d like to stay in a four-person Korean-style room.

M: Okay... let me check and see what’s available. [ Pause] Oh, I’m so sorry ma’am, but we only have rooms for eight people right now.

W: Really? Hmm... I don’t want to share a room with that many people. This time I’ll go with a Western-style room.

M: All right. How long would you like to stay?

W: Two nights.

W: David, do you know the water purifier in our office is broken?

M: Yes. It’s been broken since last week.

W: It seems like it’s always breaking down.

M: That’s right. It broke down last month, too.

W: Why is it taking so long to get it fixed this time?

M: I have no idea. It was fixed immediately last time.

W: Maybe the maintenance department doesn’t know it’s broken.

M: That’s possible. Maybe everyone assumes the maintenance department already knows about it.

W: Exactly. That’s what I was thinking.

M: Me, too. So we shouldn’t wait any longer for someone else to do it.

W: ____________________________________________________

19번

W: Honey, how was your medical checkup?

M: Well, according to the results, my cholesterol level is quite high.

W: Really? It was normal last year.

M: The doctor said it’s because of my eating habits.

W: He was referring to how much fast food you eat, right?

M: Yeah, you know, I’ve been very busy at work these days, and that’s why I eat fast food almost every day.

W: I know. I’m sure that’s the root of your problem. It’s time you start thinking more about your health.

M: That’s basically what the doctor said.

W: Why don’t you listen to his advice?

M: I know I should, but it’s not as easy as it sounds.

W: ____________________________________________________

M: Kate notices that her brother Brandon is working on a report about multi-cultural societies. He seems to have completed writing the report and is now searching online for some pictures to include in his essay.

Finally, he finds some good pictures, and copies and pastes them into his report without referencing them. Watching her brother do this, Kate wonders if he knows that he has to reference such data, even though he gets it from the Internet. So Kate advises Brandon to add footnotes for outside sources he uses in his report. In this situation, what would Kate most likely say to Brandon?
