국제정치를 논하는 자리에서나 나올 법한 이 단어는 실제로는 회의 용어로 ‘발언’

을 뜻한다. 원래 단어의 뜻과 연관하여 설명하자면, 토론 과정에 참여하여 발언 하는 것을 화자의 입장에서 자신을 낮추어 ‘끼어드는 것’으로 묘사하는 것이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 이 단어는 화자가 자신의 발언을 일컬을 경우에만 사용한다.

Ex) During my short intervention, I’d like to emphasize two points that have not been brought up yet.

제게 주어진 짧은 발언시간 동안에 저는 아직 다른 분들이 제기하지 않은 두 가지 점을 강조하고자 합니다.

토론에서 사회자의 역할은 교통을 통제하는 경찰의 역할에 비유해 볼 수 있다. 사회자는 토론이 정해진 일정한 규칙에서 벗어나지 않고 물 흐르 듯 원활히 진행되도록 참가자들을 통제한다. 그 중에서도 토론자들이 그 들에게 주어진 시간 제한(time limit)을 준수하도록 유도하는 것은 사회 자의 가장 핵심적인 역할이라고 볼 수 있다. 그래서 대부분의 사회자들 은 토론을 진행하기에 앞서 토론자들에게 제한시간을 지켜줄 것을 당부 한다.

In any case, realizing that the panel is all that stands

between you and your cocktails, I’m going to move this

회의장에서 들리는 floor라는 단어를 ‘마루’나 ‘바닥’을 의미하는 것으로 생각하 면 안 된다. 회의 용어로 the floor는 ‘발언권’ 또는 ‘청중’을 의미한다.
