Concept Note for the 11

th

e-ICON World Contest

“e-ICON World Contest” was launched in 2011 under the “e-Learning Globalization” operation initiated by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea with the following objectives:

○ To develop highly qualified teachers and students in the field of ICT/Software education by providing international collaboration opportunities for the utilization of e-Learning resources and educational mobile application development;

○ To design e-Learning content utilizable in the international educational environment;

○ To stimulate, deepen and widen global partnership and network between Korea and other countries around the world to collectively build and make impact in the current and future education system.

In pursuit of its goals, the 11the-ICON World Contest with the theme of “Develop Educational Mobile App as a Tool to Achieve SDG7 or SDG13 or both of them” invites 60 outstanding students and teachers from 20 countries, officially nominated by the Ministry of Education of each country.

Throughout the contest activities, overseas participants are grouped with a Korean team as a

“Global team” to develop an Educational Mobile App to address complex global challenges related to SDG7 or SDG13 or both of them. In this way, the contest will be a global platform for all

participants to increase their creativity and global leadership.

1. OVERVIEW

** You can choose one topic between three of them

(60 participants from 20 countries*)

Ø Korea: 20 advisory teachers, 40 middle & high school students

Ø Other Countries: 20 advisory teachers, 40 middle & high* school students

*The criteria of middle & high schools is based on Korean school system.

The number of teams per country(Apply 1 team from 1 country in principle):

- Northeast Asia (21 teams): Mongolia (1), Republic of Korea (20) ) - Africa (4 teams): South Africa (1), Tanzania (1), Rwanda (1), Morocco (1) - Middle East∙CIS (3 teams): Uzbekistan (1), Azerbaijan (1) Moldova (1) - Southeast Asia (6 teams): Indonesia (1), Malaysia (1), Vietnam (1), Philippines (1), Cambodia (1), Raos (1) - Southwest Asia (3 teams): Bangladesh (1), Bhutan (1), Nepal (1) Central∙South America (3 teams): Guatemala (1), Paraguay (1), Colombia (1)

* One team must be composed by 2 students and 1 teacher.

2. Main activities

The contest will be divided into 3 : Pre-Contest, Main Contest and Post- activities, providing participants the opportunity to study about SW programs and SDGs, more specifically App development and SDG7, ‘Affordable and Clean Energy’ & SDG13, ‘Climate Action’, and to collaborate as a global team, discussing the current global issues and generating information or solutions to address the challenge of developing creative Mobile App.

Online Training | Free online training on global issues and technical skill with documents and video recommended by the organizer, taking reflection note and brainstorming idea of App

Final Goals | Completion of Mobile App development

Drawing up team project proposal | Based on the initial project Proposal, each global team draws up the team project proposal Evaluation | Submission of 3 outcomes: Team Project Proposal, Mobile App and Presentation (ppt or pdf with App demonstration)

* Recommend that overseas participants submit the presentation video and Korean participants should attend at the evaluation through the video at Korean time.

Award Ceremony | Korean participants will attend at the awards and overseas participants could attend through the video.

POST Activities:

Modification | Revise and Supplement the App if necessary.

Promotion | Upload contest video or results on SNSs and websites Exhibition & Publication | Winner teams’ results will be exhibited at the “2021 Edtech Korea Fair”(Seoul) and published on Google Play Store.

3. Application Requirements

ROLES RESPONSIBILITIES

Students are the key actors in designing and developing the mobile App within assigned global team to compete the contest. More specifically:

- During the Pre-Contest (Online previous education), students are expected to take part in online free training individually.

- During the Main Contest, students are expected to complete 3 outcomes : Team Project Proposal, Mobile App, Presentation(ppt or pdf) with app demonstration for evaluation.

- During the Post-Activities, students are expected to revise and supplement the mobile App if necessary and promote their Apps & contest video on SNS.

The teachers will play the role of mentors and carry out the following tasks and responsibilities:

- Assist in the initial conceptualization of the Project proposal, overall planning and developing of a mobile App with their students during the contest.

- Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of the students’ project to ensure timely submission and that students could get final evaluation appropriately.

- Keep in touch with the organizer to manage and control students and get them noticed during the whole contest.

Educational Mobile App (e.g., Project planning skills, Good presentation skills in English, Story-telling skills, Project Proposal Writing skills/or Technical Skills (Programming, Video editing skills and etc.)

n Self-motivated, and Pro-active with the ability to work independently;

n Ability to work in a multicultural team and maintain effective global cooperation;

n Good understanding of global educational issues and SDGs is desirable.

Language

n Good knowledge of English (Working language of the contest is English) OTHERS

n A legal resident of the country the team is representing;

n Officially enrolled as a student at an accredited educational institution, a middle or high school;

n Fully equipped to be able to participate in all contest activities (Pre /Main/Post-) online (PC, Audio, Screen, etc.)

Teachers

Work experience

n A minimum of 3 years of relevant teaching experience in the computer/software/ICT education.

Skills/Competencies

n Advanced knowledge of ICT/Programming skills in developing Educational Mobile Apps;

n Skills to draft analytical Project Proposal and provide technical advice on thematic topic for students;

n Ability to guide a multicultural team and maintain effective team cooperation;

n A good understanding of global educational issues and SDGs.

Language

n Good knowledge of English (Working language of the contest is English) OTHERS

n A legal resident of the country the team is representing.

n Fully equipped to be able to participate in all contest activities (Pre /Main/Post-) online (PC, Audio, Screen, etc.)

* Application is submitted as a Team, composed by 2 students and 1 mentor teacher.

※ During the Main Contest, mentors from universities in Korea will be staffed to help all global teams with communication(language) and App development

○ Application Timeline

i. Letter of Intent and Application Submission: We send each Ministry of Education of countries expected to participate letters of invitation about end of March. Please send a letter of intent with application forms filled to Ms. Nagyung Kang (ngkanga@kefa.or.kr) before May 14, 2021. The person in charge within the Ministry of Education in each country MUST submit a final list of participants with the above mentioned required documents to Ms. Nagyung Kang (ngkanga@kefa.or.kr) by May 14, 2021.

ii. Announcement of final participants: An official confirmation letter along with the Pre- contest’s training instruction and other related documents will be sent to final participants by May 17, 2021. Also, the official notification will be posted on the website of organizer (www.kefa.or.kr) and e-ICON web site (e-icon.or.kr).

iii. Global team matching: After terminating the Pre-contest, Korean teams will submit the Project Proposal and overseas teams will select 3 of them with preference. After that, the organizer match one Korean team and one overseas team as a global team considering Korean teams’ preference, themes, App development tools, etc. The announcement of global team matching will be by July 9, 2021

4. Evaluation of winner teams

n Presentation video/audio: Recommended to overseas participants to submit presentation video or audio based on presentation documents above.

※ All Korean participants of each global team should attend at the evaluation online.

- All final Mobile Apps from the contest will be uploaded in the App store (Google Playstore, etc.) and utilized as instructional materials in the actual field of education

6. Rewards

The following devices and Online Platform will be provided for all participants by the organizer.

i. Bluetooth Earphones: Each participant will be provided the bluetooth earphone to support their online education.

ii. Wireless charger with sterilization: Preparing against the post Covid19, the organizer offers wireless charger with sterilization to all participants.

iii. Online Platform: All participants including Korean Mentors will communicate each other, develop App and make presentation sharing their documents through the online platform rootall offered by the organizer without any costs. You can figure out the progress of your project easily.

iv. Certificate of participation in the contest: In case of request, certificate of participation in the contest will be issued for final participants

Organizer will provide all items above to all final participants including teachers and will ship them to all participant countries at the same time after closing the contest.

7. Stipulations and Notes for Applicants

○ Copyright for the final application

- The copyright of all entries is held by each team and the organizer have the right to utilize them for promotion and exhibition.

- Contestants are liable for any legal disputes raised by the copyright holder in the case of improper conduct in exploiting the copyright without the consent from the copyright owner;

thus, prior consultation with the owner of any content that will be used as part of the application is strongly recommended.
