W: Alex, have you finished the report for history class?
M: Not yet. And I doubt I’ll be able to finish it by tomorrow.
W: Don’t you know the due date has been pushed back to next Monday?
M: _______________________________________.
M: Have you seen the notice for the student dormitory next year?
W: Yes, I have.
M: Are you going to stay another year in the dormitory?
W: _______________________________________.
W: You look better than ever these days. What’s your secret?
M: Well, nothing special. I just eat a lot of vegetables instead of meat.
W: How often do you eat vegetables?
M: _______________________________________.
W: Hello. Thank you for allowing me to speak at this public hearing. As you know, we have many dog owners in our community and we respect their right to keep dogs as pets. However, many people feel uncomfortable when dogs run free in public. That’s why the new law was passed requiring dog owners to put their dogs on a leash at all times in public places. The problem is that people don’t obey the new law or even know it exists. They still walk their dogs in parks and streets without leashes and nobody enforces the law. I strongly believe the law regarding dogs without leashes should be more strictly enforced for the safety of our community.
M: Hey, Jenny! You’re here early today.
W: I came in early because I have to leave early. I have an appointment with my doctor this afternoon.
M: You seem to make good use of this new flexible working-hour system.
W: Yes. It’s really convenient. And I can avoid rush hour traffic.
M: I know what you mean. But, I think it definitely has its disadvantages.
W: Really? I’ve never felt that way.
M: First, it’s hard to arrange group meetings. And it’s difficult to find coworkers when you need them.
W: I suppose.
M: Yeah, yesterday I needed the boss’s signature, but she had already left so I ended up wasting the afternoon. I think this system sometimes negatively affects work efficiency.
W: Well, that makes sense to some degree.
M: As for me, this system is not as convenient as I expected.
M: As your academic advisor, I’d like to give you one very important tip on succeeding in college. As a student, you’ll hear a lot of important information in class. But you cannot expect to retain or remember everything you hear. Because of the way your memory works, you usually remember the things that are interesting and important to you.
That’s why an effective note-taking strategy is essential for your studies.
Taking notes will not only help you recognize important ideas, but also help you remember what you hear in class. Therefore, if you have not already done so, you need to learn to take notes on what you hear in class.
W: Hey, your laptop is working now!
M: Yes. The battery was the problem and I got it fixed yesterday.
W: How much did you pay for the repair?
M: It cost me fifty dollars. I was quite upset because it was only seven months old.
W: Really? Wasn’t it covered by the warranty?
M: The repair person said the warranty on the battery is only good for six months.
W: That’s ridiculous! Six months is way too short.
M: Right. Warranties should be longer considering the high price of electronic goods these days.
W: I agree. I had a similar experience, when I had to get my cell phone repaired. The repair person said it was no longer under warranty.
M: How long did you use it?
W: Only a little more than a year.
M: I can't believe the warranty is so short.
M: Come this way. How do you like it?
W: Wow! It’s really spacious and all the equipment looks new.
M: Yes. It was remodeled recently.
W: Great! I’ll sign up for a monthly membership.
M: Good choice! You won’t be disappointed with our facilities and programs.
W: How much is the cost of membership?
M: It’s 80 dollars a month. But, if you pay in advance for three months, it’s only 200 dollars.
W: I’ll sign up for three months then. Do you provide a personal trainer when I work out?
M: We can, but it’ll cost you an additional fifty dollars a month.
W: Fifty dollars! In that case, I’d rather not have one. Can I look around the locker room?
M: Sure.
M: Ms. Douglas, here are our reader satisfaction survey results.
W: Okay. Hmm, in the spring edition, our readers were satisfied most by the travel section, but that was not the case for the fall edition.
M: Yes. The culture section had the highest satisfaction rate in the fall edition. It more than tripled from the spring edition.
W: Well, I think the feature stories about outdoor concerts helped it.
M: Right. Also, the satisfaction rate for the health section increased significantly from 8 to 21 percent.
W: Good. [ pause] Hmm, the satisfaction rate for the fashion section was the least in the fall edition.
M: Yes, it was also less than 10 percent in the spring edition.
W: Let’s get together later to come up with some solutions.
M: Okay. The rate for the food section was also less than 15 percent in both editions.
W: Well, we’ll talk about that later, too.
W: What’s this? You spilled coffee on my desk!
M: I’m so sorry. Here, let me wipe your desk and keyboard with some tissue.
W: You should have been more careful.
M: Sorry again. There, all done!
W: Wait. [ Keyboard typing sound] Oh, no! Now, the keyboard doesn’t work.
M: It doesn’t? I’ll take care of it. Just give me an hour.
W: But I don’t have time to wait. I am working on the sales report, and it’s due this afternoon.
M: In that case, you can use my keyboard instead. I’ll go get it now.
W: Well, I guess I have no choice.
M: Do you want me to help you with your report as well?
W: No, thanks. Everything is in my head. I just need to type it up.
M: I’m really sorry. I’ll be more careful next time.
W: Honey, why don’t we eat out on Wednesday evening?
M: Don’t you remember? I’m going on a business trip on Wednesday.
W: Oh, I completely forgot. Where did you say you’re going?
M: To Florida, for three days.
W: Wednesday, hmm. That’s the day after tomorrow.
M: Yes, I think I’ll start packing now.
W: It’s hot down there. Don’t forget to take some short-sleeved shirts.
M: Okay, I’ll take my sunglasses and sunscreen, too.
W: Oh, do you remember the people using the neck pillow during the flight to Hawaii? It looked comfortable.
M: Right. Didn’t you say you’re going to the mall this afternoon? Can you buy one for me?
W: No problem. I’ll get one then.
M: Thanks.
W: I heard you moved to a new place. How is your neighborhood?
M: It’s nice. And it’s a good area for my children's education. But I’m trying to find a new apartment.
W: Really? It’s only been a couple of months since you moved in.
M: Yeah, I thought it would be a great place when I moved in, but it turned out to be a disaster.
W: Why is that?
M: My apartment is near the intersection, so I can’t sleep well because of the traffic noise.
W: Is the noise that bad?
M: Yes, it drives me crazy. I can’t stand it any longer.
W: That’s too bad. I hope you'll find a better place soon.
W: Good afternoon, everybody! Last class we looked at some seabirds that live near the seashore. Well, today we’re going to talk about an amazing animal that flies over the open ocean: the albatross. Albatrosses are the largest seabirds in the world. There are more than twenty species of albatross, mostly living in the southern hemisphere. They usually feed on squid or fish, and they live well over fifty years. They nest on remote islands laying a single egg in a breeding season. Now, let’s take a look at how they soar and glide on the winds for thousands of kilometers across oceans without rest.
[ Telephone rings.]
M: Drink Well Company. How can I help you?
W: Hi, I’d like to rent a water purifier.
M: Do you have anything particular in mind?
W: Yes. I’d like a model with the multifunctional LED touch screen and ice maker. I saw it in your online catalog.
M: Okay, ma’am. The rental fee is $50 per month. How long are you planning to rent it?
W: For one year.
M: Okay. Would you like to pay monthly or yearly?
W: Is there any discount if I pay yearly?
M: Yes. If you pay yearly, we offer a 10% discount. That means you save $60.
W: Okay, I’ll go with the yearly payment plan. Do you take credit cards?
M: Yes, ma’am.
W: Good. I’d like to have it installed as soon as possible.
M: Anna, what are you reading?
W: Oh, Chris! It’s an article about ancient Greek artifacts. Look at this picture!
M: Wow! What does he have in his hand? Is that a tablet computer?
W: Don’t be silly. This picture is from ancient times.
M: I was just kidding. But it really looks like a tablet computer.
W: It’s a wax tablet. Ancient Greeks put a thin layer of wax on a piece of wood and wrote messages on it.
M: Interesting! I know that ancient people wrote on papyrus, a kind of paper made from papyrus stems.
W: That was the most common material, but pottery, wood, and even animal hides were used as well. Look at this picture of a schoolboy’s notebook made of wood.
M: It looks like the notebook has letters and even some pictures of people hunting animals on it.
W: Right. Look at these letters. They’re a series of syllables, with the vowel letters sandwiched between two consonant letters.
M: What’s that at the bottom?
W: Oh, it’s the signature of the schoolboy.
M: How interesting!
W: Evans, have you decided which open lectures you’re going to attend?
M: Not yet. How about you?
W: I’m taking Dr. Johnson’s lecture about finding a dream career on Saturday.
M: I want to attend that lecture, too. But I have a club meeting on Saturday morning. How about taking it on Sunday with me?
W: Sorry, but I have a part-time job from three o’clock on Sunday, so it has to be Saturday for me.
M: Okay. Are you planning to go to any other lectures?
W: I’m also thinking of going to the next lecture by Michael Chang.
M: I should be able to make it too. We can take it together.
W: Good! [ pause] Dr. Miller’s lecture also looks interesting, but I have to take care of my brother from four p.m.
M: Too bad! I think I’ll stay for that one, too.
[ Phone rings.]
M: Hello?
W: Hello, Dr. Johnson. This is Jessica Myers from BSC Radio Station.
M: Oh, Ms. Myers. How are you doing?
W: Great! Dr. Johnson, the review of last week’s forum from the listeners was very favorable.
M: Was it? Good to hear that. I wish I had made more contributions to your show.
W: It was really successful. So our show is planning another forum next month.
M: On the same topic?
W: Yes, but the format will be a little different. Can you join us again as a panelist? It’ll be on the 15th.
M: On the 15th? I might be out of town on a business trip on that day. I can’t say “yes” now.
W: Hmm, when would you know for sure? If you can’t make it, I’ll have to find someone else.
M: Not one hundred percent sure, but maybe by this Friday.
W: __________________________________________________________.
W: Hi, Joe. I’m so sorry that I’m a little late.
M: That’s all right, Judy. But... you don’t look well.
W: I barely slept last night. I worked on a report till five this morning.
M: Judy, it’s not good to work that late. Why don’t you work during the day and sleep at night?
W: I’d like to, but I can’t concentrate during the day.
M: Oh! I have a good idea. Have you heard of white noise?
W: White noise? What’s that?
M: It’s something like the sound of a waterfall or rain. Listening to it while you’re working will help you concentrate.
W: Really? Have you tried it yourself?
M: Yes. I had the same problem as you. It was very helpful.
W: I see. Maybe I should give it a try myself.
M: _________________________________________________________.
M: Brian takes a trip to Australia for several days. After coming back home, he makes a video using the pictures taken in Australia. Brian shows it to his friend, Maria. She thinks the video is very impressive. Watching the video, Maria gets a great idea. She thinks that it would be great if she could make a video for her parents’ upcoming wedding anniversary as a gift. She has enough pictures of her parents. But the problem is that she doesn’t know how to make a video with pictures. She wants to ask Brian to help her with it. In this situation, what would Maria most likely say to Brian?
