TOPIK(Test of Proficiency in Korean) Notice

Korean Education Center in Washington DC

□ What is the TOPIK test?

The TOPIK test, Test of Proficiency in Korean, is a written test designed to measure the ability of non-native speakers for expression and comprehension in the Korean language.

The TOPIK test measures proficiency in reading, writing, and listening comprehension in the Korean language. According to their level of Korean language proficiency, test takers can take one of the two types of TOPIK, TOPIK I for beginners and TOPIK II for intermediate and advanced level learners.

□ Who administers the TOPIK Test?

The Korean Ministry of Education is responsible for the general management of the test, such as supervising institutions administering the test in domestic and overseas locations.

The National Institute for International Education handles the scheduling &

issuance of testing management guidance, development of the test, printing and distribution of test sheets, and the scoring of test results.

The Korean Education Center in Washington DC administers the annual test at the request of the above institutions for test takers in the 4 states, Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia.

□ For Whom is the TOPIK test intended?

This comprehensive test is intended for non-native speakers of Korean, such as Korean language learners, international students who want to study in Korea as well as individuals who would like to work in Korean companies and public institutions.

The test also serves as an excellent opportunity to receive formal certification for those who expect to use Korean in their careers.

□ How can I apply for the TOPIK Test?

In the Washington DC metropolitan area, the Korean Education Center in Washington DC (KECDC afterwards) will host the annual TOPIK. The 67th TOPIK for the year 2019 will be administered on Saturday, November 16th. Residents in

Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, or West Virginia can apply for the 67th TOPIK by submitting an application form along with a check of $25 for TOPIK I, $30 for TOPIK II (issued payable to Korean Education Center) to KECDC by mail or in person.

Applicants can download the application form at KECDC website (www.kecdc.org).

Application must be submitted by August 30, 2019. The identification slip will be mailed to the applicant before the test date. The above mentioned processing fee will not be refunded.

TOPIK test offered?

In the Washington DC metropolitan area, the 67th TOPIK will be administered on Saturday, November 16th, 2019. The TOPIK I will start at 9:40 AM and end at 11:20 AM, and the TOPIK II from 12:50 PM to 16:20. The test will be offered at the following three locations in the DC metropolitan region. Applicants can choose one of them.

Applicants should take the test at the test center which they have chosen.

◉ Time Schedule

▣ TOPIK I : 9:40 am ~ 11:20 (100 minutes) Listening & Reading

▣ TOPIK II : (1st period) 12:50 pm ~ 14:40 pm (110 minutes) Listening & Writing (2nd period) 15:10 pm ~ 16:20 pm (70 minutes) Reading

□ Notice for the applicants

Applicants are requested to bring the identification slip and a valid photo identification such as a passport, or driver's license to the test site. The name and your birthday on your application must match those on the identification.

All applicants should enter the test site 30 minutes before the test starting time on the test day.

Only the pen distributed at the test site can be used when you mark or write your answers on the answer sheet. Lightly or partly marked answers might not be read by the scoring machine. Both the test papers and answer sheets must be returned.

Books, dictionaries, papers, notes, electronic watches, mobile phones, listening devices,

recording or photographic equipment, or aids of any kind are not allowed in the testing room, so they should be submitted to the test supervisor before the test starts if, by any chance, you have any of them with you on the test day.

Test supervisors have the authority to dismiss test takers from a test session, or scores may be canceled, due to the violations of any regulations for the test. For example, attempting to take the test for someone else, using any aids in connection with the test, or failing to follow any of the test regulations given by the test supervisors.
