Nick’s Memory
Nick이 Daisy를 초대하겠다고 하고 나서 Gatsby가 Nick에게 어떤 부업을 할 것을 제 안하지만 Nick은 거절한다. 훗날 글을 쓰면 서 만약 그 당시 Gatsby의 제안을 받아들였
다면 자신의 인생이 큰 위기에 처했을 것이
라고 말한다.
I realize now that under different
circumstances that conversation might have been one of the crises of my life. But, because the offer was obviously and tactlessly for a
service to be rendered, I had no choice except to cut him off there.
Gatsby’s Attention to Daisy’s Response
Gatsby가 자신의 집을 Daisy에게 보여 주면서 모든 것을 Daisy의 반응에 따라 가치를 다시 평가하는 모습.
He hadn't once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of
response it drew from her well-loved eyes.
Daisy’s Materialism?
Daisy가 Nick의 shirts를 보고 흐느껴 우 는 모습--Daisy가 잃어버린 사랑에 대한
슬픔의 눈물이 아니라 그녀 앞에 펼쳐
지는 부에 대한 눈물로써 Daisy의 물질 주의(materialism)를 보여줌.
“They're such beautiful shirts,” she
sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick
folds. "It makes me sad because I've never seen such ―such beautiful shirts before.”
No Longer the Green Light
Gatsby에게 green light의 의미가 Daisy가 옆에
있음으로 해서 달라짐.
Daisy put her arm through his abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said.
Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great
distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed as close as a star to the moon.
Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.
Gatsby’s Illusion
Gatsby의 illusion은 커다란 것으로 그것은 Daisy의 실제보다 훨씬 넘어서 존재한다.
There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his
dreams―not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright
feather that drifted his way. No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man can store up in his ghostly heart.
