문과 /이과 진로 주제
Talk about picking the humanities or sciences track in high school.
고등학교 때 문과 혹은 이과 진로를 선택하는 것에 대해 이야기해 주세요.
[Model Response]
When students in Korean enter their second year of high school, they have to choose between the humanities or the sciences track. This is aimed at providing more in-depth education. Depending on which track they choose, students take different elective classes. Students who choose sciences take higher-level classes for math and science. Humanities students do extra course work in world history, geography, or foreign languages. Choosing one's track has a major impact on college entry. Further on, it can even influence the job hunt. Some students change tracks mid- way. However, this is very rare. The system has its pros and cons.

한국에서는 학생들이 고등학교 2학년에 올라갈 때, 문과와 이과 진로 중에서 선택을 해야 된다. 이는 조금 더 심화 된 교육을 제공하는 것을 목표로 한다. 어느 진로를 선택하느냐에 따라 학생들은 서로 다른 선택 수업을 듣는다.
이과를 선택한 학생들은 더 높은 수준의 수학과 과학 수업을 듣는다. 문과 학생들은 세계사, 지리, 혹은 외국어 과 목 수업을 더 듣는다. 진로 선택은 대학 입시에 중대한 영향을 미친다. 나아가 직장을 구하는 데도 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 일부 학생들은 중도에 진로를 변경한다. 하지만 이는 매우 드문 일이다. 이러한 제도는 장단점이 있다.

second year of high school 고등학교 2학년
나라별로 고등학교의 교육 기간이 상이하기 때문에 '고2'라고 하면 혼동이 발생할 수 있다. 예를 들어 미국에서는 고등학교가 주로 4년제로서 freshman, sophomore, junior, senior year을 거치게 된다. 상황에 적절한 표현을 쓰도록 하자.
예) My son is in his second year of high school. (우리 아들은 고등학교 2학년이다.) I am in my junior year of high school. (저는 고등학교 2학년입니다.)
