어떤 ‘여왕’의 집착
영국의 메리 여왕은 ‘피의 메리’로 유명하다. 메리는 가톨릭으로 나라를 되돌리려 했고 스페인의 왕자였던 남편 필리페에 집착해 점령지 칼레를 잃기도 했다. ‘블러 디 메리’에게서 후대 권력자들은 무엇을 배워야 할까.
권력자 – 사전적 의미를 그대로 옮길 경우와 문맥에서 의미를 옮길 경우 여기서는 정치권력을 의미하므로 ruler 정도가 적당함

<먼 나라 이웃 나라>를 열심히 본 너는 영국의 메리 여왕을 알 거야. 숱한 사람 들을 교수대로 보낸 무서운 여왕 블러디 메리, 즉 피의 메리로 기억할지도 모르 겠구나. 하지만 메리 여왕은 ‘블러디 메리’라는 별명에 정색하고 항의할지도 몰라.
“왜 나만 피의 메리냐. 여동생 엘리자베스는 어떻고 아버지 헨리 8세는 나보다 더했는데.”
가정법의 적절한 사용- 메리여왕은 이미 죽었으므로 ‘살아있다면’ 이란 가 정하에 하는 말이다. 그러므로 가정법 사용함

지를 바탕으로 반란을 진압해. 영국 국민은 가톨릭이냐 신교냐를 따지기에 앞서 불행한 어린 시절을 보낸 그녀를 동정했던 거야. “얼마나 불쌍해. 저 고귀한 여인 이 계모의 딸을 돌보는 하녀 역할까지 했다니!” 헨리 8세의 후처 앤 불린은 메리 에게 자신의 딸 엘리자베스를 돌보라고 명령했거든.
문맥으로 파악하기- 카돌릭이냐 신교냐는 여기서는 메리의 종교를 의미함.
On the demise of Edward VI, the young prince who is the hero in Mark Twain’s book, “The Prince and The Pauper,’ Mary succeeded to the throne. There were sizeable forces who were against Queen Mary, who was a devout Catholic and daughter of a Spanish princess. Even a rebellion ensued. Mary succeeded in suppressing it with the help of the sympathetic people. The English people commiserated with her, who had gone through a miserable childhood, putting aside her religious affiliation, ‘What a pitiable woman! Imagine the noble woman having played the role of a servant to the daughter of her stepmother!’ It is understandable considering that Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife, ordered Mary to take care of her daughter, Elizabeth.
하지만 그녀는 아버지 헨리 8세와 남동생 에드워드 6세를 거치면서 뿌리를 내린 성공회를 부정하고 가톨릭으로 나라를 되돌리려는 무리한 시도를 하지. 거역하는 사람들에게는 용서가 없었고. 결정적으로 영국인을 화나게 한 사건이 발생하는데, 바로 스페인의 왕자이자 합스부르크 왕가 출신 필리페 왕자와의 결혼이었어. 그 녀는 무려 열한 살이나 아래인 필리페 왕자에게 흠뻑 빠져서(만나보지도 않고!) 그와 결혼하겠다고 선언해. 여론은 크게 반발했고 와이어트라는 사람은 아예 반 란을 일으켜서 런던으로 쳐들어오지만, 메리 여왕은 의연하게 대처해 반란을 진 압하고 필리페와 결혼에 골인하게 돼.
문맥파악- 헨리 8세와 남동생 에드워드 6세를 거쳤다는 말은 그 치하에서 카톨릭을 장려 육성 보호했다는 말이므로 단순히 during the reign 이라는 시간의미를 강조하는 대신 under the regime 이라는 표현이 더 어울림 However, she tried in vain to return the nation to Catholicism, repudiating the
Church of England, which had taken root with the support from Henry VIII and her brother, Edward VI. She showed no pity to the opponents. An incident that infuriated the people was her decision to marry Prince Philip of Spain, a royalty of Habsburgs. Madly in love, she declared that she would marry Prince Philip, as many as eleven years younger than her, without even seeing him.
메리 여왕은 천신만고 끝에 필리페를 남편으로 맞았지만 정작 필리페는 이 헌신 적인 여왕에게 무심했어. 어차피 정략결혼이었고 열한 살 위의 큰누나쯤 되는 메 리에게 별 매력을 느끼지 못한 데다가, 영국 의회가 “메리가 먼저 죽어도 필리페 는 왕위 계승권이 없으며 영국의 법률을 존중해야 한다”라는 둥 까다로운 조건을 내걸자 더 정나미가 떨어져버린 거지. 1년 정도 영국에서 머무른 뒤 스페인으로 돌아간 그는 아내를 거의 돌아보지 않아. 하지만 그럴수록 메리 여왕은 필리페에 게 집착한단다.
‘어차피’ 라는 표현은 사전에는 다른 등가어가 많지만 실은 이 문맥에서는 그도 그럴것이, 따지고 보면 이란 의미가 더 어울림. 따라서 After all 이라 는 표현을 사용함.
Although Queen Mary managed to marry Philip after going through hell, Philip, actually, did not love his dedicated wife. After all, it was a marriage of convenience.
He was not attracted to Mary, who was way older than him by eleven years.
Furthermore, he was disenchanted with Mary after the English parliament put encumbrances upon him, denying him the right to be the next in line of succession, demanding that he respect the law of England. After about one year in England, he returned to Spain and almost neglected her. Queen Mary clung to him all the more.
