The local structural and chemical properties of photocatalyst TiO
2nanoparticles were examined using in-situ XAFS under ultraviolet light. XANES showed that the local density of states of the 3d electrons in Ti nearly unchanged during the photocatalysis, suggesting that the 3d electrons are irrelevant to the photocatalytic reaction of TiO
2. EXAFS measurements showed that the bond length and the displacement of Ti-O pairs changed during the photocatalysis. We also observed that the Ti-O octahedra were deformed due to the photocatalysis.
