We have enhanced the signal of a fiber–optic BOTDA sensor for long–distance measurements.

The sensor is simply constructed with one laser diode and two EOMs (electro optic modulators).

A two-stage EDFA (Erbium–doped fiber amplifier) with a band pass filter is fabricated to amplify the pumping light pulse causing, stimulated brillouin amplification in the sensor signal. Our exper- imental results show that when using a two–stage EDFA, the intensity of the pumping light pulse is amplified about 15 times compared to the value achived when using a one–stage EDFA. Also, the sensor signal is increased 20 times more than the signal acquired before the amplification of the pumping light pulse.
