You have probably heard of fingerprints, but do you know about these? These are not for people. These are for cows. Farmers use these to aid them in knowing if a cow belongs to them. Farmers also use these to stop people who steal cattle. A cow’s nose has lines and circles on it just as a person’s fingers do. No two cows have these wholly alike. These vary from cow to cow.
That is why these can help farmers know if a cow belongs to their herd.

The word “natural” appears in large letters across many cans and boxes of food. But this word, and others like it, sometimes give shoppers false ideas about the food inside. Even though laws require that all food labels give truthful information, this does not always happen.
The word “natural” has not been defined by the FDA, the agency in charge of food labels. So any food maker can use the word on a package. Even the worst junk food is certain to have something natural in it. So the makers of these foods can use “natural” on their packages. Consumers should read labels carefully and write letters of complaint to the FDA whenever they come across products that are not truly natural. Everyone in the marketplace can help to make truth in labeling work effectively.

The people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their country will disappear from the face of the earth. Several times this year, the Pacific island nation has been flooded by a sudden high tide. These tides, which swept across the island and destroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain. What is causing these mysterious high tides? The answer may well be . When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants are released; these pollutants trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere. They picked her up at 8:00 A.M. and drove most of the day to get to the national park. They just had time to pitch their tents, build the fire, and cook dinner before it got dark. Emily went into the forest to gather firewood.

As a subject of scientific observation and study, geography has made important contributions both to the understanding of the world and to its development. As we move further into the Information Age, geography continues to contribute to the understanding of a world that is more complex and fast-changing than ever before.
With such an understanding, it is possible not only to appreciate the diversity and variety of the world’s peoples and places, but also to be aware of their relationships to one another and to be able to make positive contributions to local, national, and global development.

People can now watch a great variety of video tapes at home on the VCR. Materials available include everything stocked at the local video store and movies or any other programs from the 24-hour selections on television, as well as tapes made at home or borrowed from friends. Such entertainment in the home is also more affordable than it is in public places. The greater convenience of watching tapes at any hour and pausing a tape or finishing it at a later time makes entertainment possible for people who have very limited opportunities to go to the movies or watch television. The VCR also enables family and friends to be together in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying one another’s company and also communicating in a way that is not possible in a movie theater.

33. 문맥상 command와 바꿔 쓰기에 적절한 것은?
Learning a language is not a matter of acquiring a set of rules and building up a large vocabulary. The teacher’s roles should not be directed at informing his students about a language, but at enabling them to use it. The drills and exercises a student does have one end in sight: to enable him to become a skilled performer. The student’s command of a language will therefore be judged not by how much he knows but by how well he can perform in public.

While shopping malls have changed our lives, not all of their effects have been positive. Most of the shops and services found in malls are parts of large corporations.
① These businesses have taken away customers from smaller shops in the area and forced them to close.
② That has meant fewer individually-owned businesses and less local control over jobs. ③ In addition, malls are not harmful to the environment. ④ Malls have sometimes been built on land that is important for the survival of birds and wild animals. ⑤ Wherever they are built, they cover large areas with buildings and parking lots, instead of trees or grass. Thus, they contribute to the general loss of nature.

Several factors can interfere with having a good memory.
One such factor is a lack of motivation. Without a real desire to learn or remember something, you probably won’t.
Another cause is a lack of practice. To stay sharp, memory skills, like any other skill, must be used on a regular basis.
A third factor that can hurt memory is self-doubt. If you’re convinced you won’t remember something, you probably won’t. A person with a positive attitude will do much better on a test than someone who is sure he or she won’t remember the material. Lastly, distraction can interfere with memory. If you are being distracted by the sound of a television or a conversation nearby, try to find a quiet environment before you attempt to commit something to memory.

③ a strong desire to learn something

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━What would my life be like if my children didn’t play sports? Well, it may be more relaxed on one hand.
However, like other parents, I can see the immense benefits sports provide our children! Organized sports offer children of all ages the chance to exercise, to be part of a team, and to form relationships they may not otherwise have.
Working out not only helps to lessen depression, it also helps teenagers overcome the uneasiness they may feel at times as they develop and change. And being on a sports team can be helpful and stabilizing at a time when so many things in their lives seem devastating. And sharing in both its accomplishments and failures is a wonderful experience.

Most weeds are harmful, unwanted plants. But a Danish biotech company has adapted one plant to help save lives.
Scientists in Copenhagen have genetically modified the plant so that it changes from its normal green color to red when its roots touch nitrogen dioxide, a gas that leaks out of buried land mines and unexploded weapons. Many of these explosives can remain active for over 50 years, emitting nitrogen dioxide all the while. Getting rid of the mines from the ground is tedious, painstaking work. But the color-changing plant, expected to be used regularly within two years, does present a cost-effective alternative to the most common detection methods currently available

It is our hope that any adult or teenager who picks up this book will find his or her “child heart” touched, and hopefully, reawakened. We truly believe that within each and everyone of us, there is a piece of our heart and soul that we have hidden ― a piece of us that perhaps still believes that there is a Santa Claus, and that good will always prevail over evil. On a very deep level we all want to be loved, accepted, encouraged and supported, no matter what our age. From our hearts to your hearts, we presents this book. May kids reign forever!

It is difficult to say just how urbanized the world has become. With urban growth taking place rapidly, it is impossible even for experts to do more than provide estimates. According to the UN data, almost half of the world’s population is now urban. These data make the very different definitions of urban used by different countries.
Some countries count any settlement of 1,000 people or more as urban, while others use 10,000 as the minimum for an urban settlement; and Japan uses 50,000 as the cut-off.
This, by the way, tells us that urbanization is a relative phenomenon. In countries like Peru, a settlement of 2,000 represents a significant center. However, a much larger concentration of people is required to count as “urban.”

(A) I have a special rule for travel: Never carry a map. I prefer to ask for directions, and I can find out about different “style” of directions every time I ask, “How can I get to the post office?” Here are some illustrations of those differences.
(B) Tourists are often confused in Japan. Because most streets don’t have names. The Japanese might tell travellers something like this: “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel, and go past the fruit market.”
(C) In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. So residents will tell you directions and distances. People will say, “Go straight north for two miles and turn right.”
(D) On the other hand, people in Los Angeles have no idea of directions or distances on the map. They measure distance in time. They might answer, “I guess it’s about five minutes from here.”
(E) Sometimes, people in the European country of Greece do not even try to give directions: that’s because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead they may gesture or say, “Follow me.”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━Once a poor student had to wander about the countryside. He had no money, and he had no home. One freezing night, the student knocked at the door of a farmer’s house. The farmer was an agreeable person who said, “Come in! You look very tired and hungry.” The farmer gave the student supper, and the two began talking.
The farmer asked whether the student could answer a question he was wondering about. He asked, (A) “What is it that God is doing up in the sky tonight?” The student pondered for a long time but confessed that he didn’t know the answer. “Never mind,” said the farmer.
“Maybe there is no answer.” The farmer gave the student a cozy room in which to sleep and a big breakfast the next morning. “Now,” said the student, “I’ll be on my way.
Thank you.”
The student traveled on. ⓐ He eventually found a good job as a teacher and purchased a home of his own. One day, ⓑ he saw a very old fellow limping up the path. One of the biggest differences between men and women is how they cope with stress. Here is a common example.
When Tom comes home, he wants to relax by quietly reading the news. He is stressed by the unsolved problems of his day and finds relief through forgetting them. His wife, Mary, also wants to relax from her stressful day. She, (A) , wants to find relief by talking about the problems of her day. The tension slowly building between them gradually becomes resentment. Tom secretly thinks Mary talks too much, (B) Mary feels ignored. Without understanding their differences they will grow further apart.
You probably can recognize this situation because it is just one of many examples where men and women quarrel.
This problem is not just Tom and Mary’s but is present in almost every relationship. Solving this problem for Tom and Mary depends not on how much they loved each other but on how much they understood the opposite sex.
Without knowing that women really do need to talk about problems to feel better, Tom would continue to think Mary talked too much and resist listening to her. Without knowing that Tom was reading the news to feel better, Mary would feel ignored and neglected. She would persist in trying to get him to talk when he didn’t want to. These two differences can be resolved by first understanding in greater detail how men and women cope with stress.

Do you want to be healthier and live longer? Then take some lessons from the Chinese. And stay away from the typical North American diet.
The Chinese eat a healthy, plant-based diet. A joint study found that although the Chinese diet varies from region to region, it generally includes a lot of rice, grains, and fruit. Animal products are eaten sparingly. In southern China, for instance, almost every meal includes a big bowl of rice. People usually eat a vegetable with the meal, perhaps some fruit, and maybe some fish. Pork and chicken are eaten only on special occasions.
The rate for heart disease among men in China is one-sixteenth the rate in the U.S. The rate for colon cancer is only about two-fifths of the U.S. rate. Scientists believe that the poor diet of North American is killing them. The average citizen consumes too much meat, sugar and salt and not enough vegetables, grains, and fiber. And these unhealthy eating habits are prime suspects in several serious diseases: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers. Some call these diseases “_____________.” As countries become richer, people begin to eat more meat.
Heart disease and certain kinds of cancer increase. This is happening in Japan and in the wealthier parts of China.
