. 밑줄 친 This[this]가 가리키는 것으로 가장 적절한 것은? 점 [1 ] From the very beginnings, this has been closely connected with the concept of an open society. This was an essential part of the new form of government, democracy. Unlike totalitarian and other undemocratic societies where a limited set of ideas are imposed as absolute truths, democratic societies depend upon the free and open exchange of ideas. In ancient Athens, citizens gathered in forums to discuss the most pressing issues of the day before casting their votes. This encourages the values such as reason and tolerance.

I am a student majoring in medicine at John Hopkins University, which I have dreamt of for a long time. In fact, the cost for my dream was a serious concern of mine. I had a 6-month-old son, and was, therefore, quite worried about taking on the high cost of medical school. When I found out I was the recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship which you established, it made my decision to accept the admission from John Hopkins University so much easier. Because of your gracious dedication to the Foundation, I have had the privilege of attending an institution that leads one of the best quality medical research centers.

The athletes who compete in this event look as if they are dancing as they bounce down the runway. (B) Another / The other event is the hammer throw. This event’s name is misleading because the hammer does not look like a carpenter’s tool at all. The hammer in the Olympic event is a metal ball that hangs from a wire handle. There are no social conventions ① regulating our grief at the death of an animal. You can throw your cat’s body in the garbage can or bury ② it with a gravestone. It is quite a different situation after the loss of a close family member, ③ when some mourning is required to prove your humanity. In general, however, there is a notion④ that grief after the loss of an animal is suitable for children but not for adults. Mourning a dead pet provides children with a useful “rehearsal” for the death of human family members, but it is not considered ⑤ appropriately for adults because there is a lack of social support for the mature person going through such grief.

Numerous young people today are bearing children without having the least idea of how to be a good parent. ① Many of them have grown up in families where poor parenting was common, and so they did not have good parenting models. ② Therefore, every high-school student should be required to take a class in parenting skills. ③ Well-planned parenting classes could give future parents at least an idea of what responsible parenting is all about. ④ That is, parents should be more encouraged to get involved in the school curriculum. ⑤ The classes might then reduce future problems, including child abuse and neglect, family violence, etc.

. The role of in communication varies from culture to culture. North American and Arab speakers expect some sort of immediate response to a suggestion or a request. The initial absence of talk is generally interpreted by them as a negative response. But a speaker from Asian culture often uses it to convey his respect for another speaker before offering a response. This kind of cultural difference may also lead to misunderstandings in the language classroom. For instance, American teachers may regard Asian students who are slow to respond as slow to learn, while Asian students may regard American teachers who expect more immediate responses as impatient.

In Greek this word means “wasting away.” In some orphanages, the death rate was nearly 100 percent. Even children in the most “advanced” homes and institutions died frequently from the disease. Researchers finally found that the infants suffered from a lack of touching from parents or nurses. From this knowledge came the practice in institutions of picking the baby up, carrying it around, and hugging it several times each day. At one hospital that began this practice, the death rate for infants fell from between 30 to 35 percent to below 10 percent.

There seems to have been a time in our history when people were able to write legibly and were obviously proud of their names. But that is not the case anymore. Illegible scribbles have become commonplace and acceptable. That is why space is provided to print your name on most documents so that it can be more easily read. Some people seem to consider that a signature that is hard to read is the demonstration of self-importance. But it has the opposite effect, I believe. That is, illegible signatures just indicate a lack of self-esteem. ⑤

. Numerous bookstore chains have sprung up throughout the country in recent years, among them: Borders, Super Crown, and Barnes and Noble. These businesses are designed to appeal particularly to young adults. Most offer comfortable chairs in which to sit, relax, and read. Some of these stores have a cafe area where specialty coffees, teas, muffins, and other delights are available. The evening hours are often filled with concerts, poetry readings, or other special events. Bookstores don’t just sell books anymore; they sell a lifestyle. . Scientists have traced the origins of shopping back to prehistoric times, when “shopping” was called “hunting.” A primitive man would make out his “shopping list” by drawing, on his cave wall, a picture of his target, a yak. He would then go out into the wild, locate his target, and make the “purchase” by whomping the yak. This primitive shopper did not ask whether the yak was on sale. He did not ask his friends if the yak made him look gorgeous. He just WHOMPED THE YAK, dragged it home, and his shopping was over. This is why, even today, most men are inborn yak-whompers when they shop. They do not wander: They go straight for the kill.

Erich Weiss was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1874. When he was a child, his family immigrated to the United States. Beginning at age 8, Erich sold newspapers and shined shoes because he had to help support his poor family. As a teenager, he discovered his talent for magic and illusion. He read books about magicians and learned to perform card tricks and escape from handcuffs. At this point, Erich Weiss changed his name to Harry Houdini, after famous magician Robert Houdini. Throughout his career, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to free himself from any restraint and dangerous situation, including prison cells and coffins. Soon he was known worldwide.

. hemlock plant에 관한 다음 글의 내용과 일치하지 않는 것은? The poisonous qualities of the hemlock plant have been acknowledged since ancient times. The Greek philosopher Socrates was executed by the poison of this plant in 339 BC as punishment for publicising his ideas. The symptoms of hemlock poisoning include vomiting and loss of muscular power. These may show as quickly as twelve minutes after the hemlock is eaten and death may occur in two to three hours. However, some animals remarkably acquire immunity to it. When the animals eat the leaves of the plant, they unknowingly eat the insects and caterpillars on them as well, which gives the animals power to digest the poison without any harm. ⑤

. The belief that we use only 10% of our brains has persisted for over a century, despite dramatic advances in brain science. Some sources attribute this claim to Albert Einstein, but no such reference or statement by Einstein has ever been recorded. This myth arose as early as 1907, spread by multiple sources advocating the power of self-improvement. Evidence from studies of the brain shows that people use much more than 10% of their brain. Studies of patients with brain injury suggest that damage to almost any area of the brain has specific and lasting effects on mental and behavioral capabilities. Numerous types of brain imaging studies show that no area of the brain is completely silent or inactive.

. Your plane starts to take off and the open air vents above your seat start blowing out cool air. As you sit back with your head up, do you wonder ― is that recycled air blowing germs down on me? You’d better not blame the air up there. A medical study found that passengers flying in planes with re-circulated air didn’t catch more colds than people on planes ventilated with fresh air. Furthermore, cabin air filters in most airplanes can capture up to 99.9% of small bacteria and viruses. Then, how did you catch a cold on the plane? . The summer of 2007 smashed all records for the loss of

summer sea ice in the Arctic Ocean. Scientists are trying to figure out why the Arctic is warming and melting faster than computer models predict. Man has mainly been blamed for the threatened Arctic. However, there’s a natural cause that may account for much of the Arctic warming, which has melted sea ice, according to the journal Nature. It points a finger at a natural and cyclical increase in the amount of energy in the atmosphere that moves from south to north around the Arctic Circle. It says that the combination of both the natural energy transfer increase and man-made global warming serves as a one-two punch that is pushing the Arctic over the edge.

Parents can be very important teachers in their children’s lives; however, they are not always the best. For example, they may limit a child’s freedom in the name of safety. A teacher may organize an educational trip to a big city, but a parent may think this trip is too dangerous. Sometimes parents expect their children’s interests to be similar to their own. If the parents love science, they may force their child to love science, too. But what if the child prefers art?

When they refused, the researcher immediately asked if they could agree to a much smaller amount of time, 2 hours. Of course, there are some people who work hard despite low pay and without big reward, but still money is a motivating factor for most diligent workers. Workers who are paid more by their employers tend to be satisfied with their jobs and generally happier in their jobs, showing more enthusiasm for their work than those who are not as well-paid.

Person B People choose what to do based on the possibility of rewards. However, not all behavior depends on reward, such as determination to succeed or desire to achieve. With this in mind, we can suppose that the amount of pay is not always related to the amount of work. You cannot buy a worker’s honesty or diligence by paying them more money. Of course, when people get a raise, they might be more motivated for a short period of time, but that soon wears off as they start to spend more money. More often, people work hard because they . People like to take pride in something because it gives them a sense of meaning and purpose.

(A) Sailors believe it is bad luck to change a ship’s name. “Let her stay as she was born,” they say. Certainly the troubles of the ship Amazon began when her name was changed to Mary Celeste. In 1872, the Celeste set sail from New York to England. Beneath her decks she carried a cargo of industrial alcohol, which was highly explosive. The seas were calm and the weather was good. Everyone expected to be in England within a month.

(B) The Dei Gratia towed the Celeste to England, where (a) she was checked again but none were found. The crew of the Dei Gratia was questioned by the court, and the judge ruled that the crew of the Celeste got drunk and killed the captain, leaving the ship using the lifeboats. Few people believed the explanation, because the captain had been liked and it simply didn’t make sense for the crew to abandon the ship. Over the years, many people have tried to solve the mystery, but nobody succeeded.

(C) Two weeks later, however, the Celeste was spotted by the Dei Gratia, which had also started (b) her sail from New York. Nobody could be seen on the deck. David Morehouse, captain of the Dei Gratia noticed something was wrong, and asked his crew to board and search (c) her from stern to bow. There were no leaks in the ship and the cargo of alcohol was untouched. Yet, the men were gone. A half-eaten breakfast was still on the table, and the lifeboats were missing.

(D) We may never know the fate of the crew, but we know the Celeste’s. After she lost (d) her crew, few people wanted to sail on her. Finally, in 1884, the ship set sail for the last time with her new captain, but she smashed into the rocks. It looked like bad luck related to (e) her name. However, it turned out that the captain had attempted to sink her to claim the insurance money. He was thrown in jail and became the last person trapped in the web of bad luck spun by the ill-fatedMary Celeste.
